Actually, I was legit wondering where he got that from. I was already trying to pass this off as 'Oh, he's just joking, right?' when he claimed every non-Usopp fight had no strategy involved whatsoever despite the fact that's basically how Luffy overcomes, like, 90% of his biggest opponents. Then for him to say that Garp is awful without giving any reason whatsoever, by this point, this was like a harsher version of his Adventure Time video. He even stated in the description he hated that show, but I swear, he was less hard on with his roasting of that one. The only criticisms I agree with him on are how underutilized Robin is and Oda feeling the need to balloon every female lead's chest before the time skip while using 'Well, they're growing girls' as his excuse. And while we're at it, to claim the Straw Hats don't have a strong bond despite there being tons of subtle moments making that clear, he just kinda strikes me as the kind of person who needs things blatantly spelled out to him, which is kinda funny as I'm pretty sure he's praised subtle works in the past.

He changed it so that she was instead freaked out that another girl prettier than her was around) and decided to take it upon himself to heavily edit the dialogue. Like, he wholesale rewrote entire scenes and completely changed the narrative because he didn't like it. Took to twitter to rail against the anime and brag about his alterations and promptly got fired. Not for rewriting the story, mind you, but because he yapped about rewriting the story. Apparently the studios don't care about their localizers rewriting scripts so long as they keep that shit under wraps.

So Jello here might just be incapable of reading subtext in media. He might actually not be able to pick up on the social cues from the characters about how they feel about each without them laying it all out there with literal conversation. Zoro and Robin's entire relationship is subtextual and is more how they treat each rather than the things that they straight up tell each other, maybe the reason he prefers localized media is because he legitimately can't read the room and needs things explained to him. Having been in the Patron book club where this video ended up forming from, your mention of "So Jello here might just be incapable of reading subtext in media" really is the most fitting read on the situation. I recall a time or two where when people pointed out that he was missing something, he said that was the readers coming up with the explanation in their head and it wasn't literally on the page, so it didn't count/wasn't accurate. During the book club, it went from analyzing the story with a few nitpicks here and there at the common problems (or even smaller details), to the problems taking up more focus than they actually were in the portion of story being discussed, to things that aren't problems being misinterpreted. But because the original problems were there, it was difficult to ever change his mindset on the stuff that was good. Unfortunately, the comment section for the video is a crapshoot of people not understanding the actual faults in Jello's analysis, and misunderstanding what he says throughout the video, and then proving him right (in his own head) that the fanbase is stupid.

The funny thing is, a lot of Marines in One Piece have been shown as questioning the government and conflicting what it means to be just. Gary and Aokiji’s entire character arcs are defined by their wavering loyalty to the marines and the World Government as a whole. Garp was conflicted about proceeding with Ace’s execution and fighting Luffy. Aokiji literally LEFT the marines after losing to Akainu and he is frequently shown as questioning his orders when he feels that the marines are doing immoral. Hell, even Akainu, the Marine Poster boy, is shown as having doubts in the government post-timeskip. Oda has made it clear that there is no definitive “good group” or “bad group” in the One Piece story, just good people and bad people.

Dragon is disgusted by Vegapunk’s decision to be a WG scientist and VP breaks it down saying Dragon and his ragtag group couldn’t possibly fund his research asking “what good are my skills if I can’t actually build anything” before making the point the WG is a massive organization and that plenty of them are decent people who can be reasoned with, especially in the marines. And we see plenty of decent marines. The marines under Axe Hand Morgans thanked Luffy and Zoro for beating up Morgans and then not only refused to arrest them if they left peacefully and then let Koby join as an Ex-Pirate seemingly overlooking his “checkered past”. Smoker for all he’s worth was able to recognize it was best to work with pirates temporarily to help take down a bigger threat/menace in Caesar Clown. Aokiji has always bent the rules he’s found too much like letting Saul and Robin live and left when Akainu took power knowing what that would mean if he stayed. Kizaru has had an entire arc where he’s struggling to do as he’s ordered and even helped the Strawhats survive egghead by feeding Luffy. Even the VAs attending the Egghead buster call weren’t 100% on board with what just happened after the siege and reveal of the Gorosei. Heck, T-Bone from the Sea Train arc was a genuine saint literally giving the shirt off his back to bandage a tiny cut on his men, there’s even a legitimate theory he let that old man collect the Cross Guild bounty on him.

They aren't just the designated healers, or cheerleaders. Do they have sex appeal? Yes, does it bother me as a female fan of OP, no. Because how a character dresses or appears can tell you a lot about their personality. For instance before Arlong Park Nami would be more covered up to hide that she had the Arlong tattoo and feels more closed off. After the arc she is free and her clothes are more playful and she can express her new freedom in now being able to wear what she wants to. Is some of it for sex appeal? Yes, does it bother me, naw, because there are just as many shirtless men as there are women (it's a story about pirates your gonna get people with less clothes. Heck, cool dude Franky is in a speedo for most of the story.) Though I won't lie it is easy for someone to look at OP and right off the bat go "Ew, why are all the women like that?" then go back to reading some other manga where female characters are nonexistent.

Also note, clothes in One Piece often reflect freedom, notice Nami dresses how she wants, when a man complains about it in Punk Hazzard, the story treats it as sexist and shitty. Half the Straw Hats don't bathe more than once a week. The girls have sex appeal but it's due to them being free to do whatever they want. Nami isn't dressing for anyone else or to get boys. She likes it. If Nami turned around and didn't bath, wore long pants and shirts for an entire arc no one in the story or readership would care. A core part of the story is non of the SH's have to do anything

But once she was free from Arlong that all changed. I HATE his take on Robin. Robin doesn't fight because it reminds her of the bad times. Robin only ever wanted to be a archeologist, she wanted to be friends with the scholars, she had a dream. Robin learned quick that she couldn't trust people, so in the darkest moment of her life she turned to work as an assassin. Robin wanted to die before she met the Straw Hat Pirates. This too. Robin is the intel/history person of the crew. Usopp, Nami, Chopper, and Brooke are also much weaker than Luffy, Sanji/Zolo, and Jimbei, so they tend to fight mooks, lesser villains, and occasionally heavy hitters as a team. Heck, Ulti in the Wano arc took at least 4 or 5 people to beat altogether, including an assist from both Big Mom and Yamato.

Jello's basis for "doesn't credit assistants" is because there was an SBS question asking him to talk about his assistants, and Oda instead made a joke. This happened around the time where he had gotten more and more angry with the SBS, but was still reading it because he decided to do it for the book club and was sticking with it. So as best I can guess he got stuck on that question and never saw any of the actual times Oda credited any of his assistants.

Seriously, of course some characters aren't gonna play big roles in a big story. Half of the fun/base original premise of one piece is sailing to new & unique places and meeting colorful characters and sometimes some will be more important than others. I know the term "cutting the fat" but sometimes you need said fat. like look at the frieza saga in dragon ball z, objectively you could cut down the new characters to just Frieza because he is the only one to play importance for the story going further but would it be as entertaining? no, just because they dont play into the overall story doesn't mean they don't play into/add to the current story or arc.

I didn’t even notice the “Cuups” wiki page but honestly it’s just so disgusting. Criticizing Oda and One Piece is one thing but to criticize fans for their passion and admiration is just so scummy. It’s so clear that this is out of spite considering how he used to be a translator/localizer (Look how that turned out). I seriously don’t understand how people in the industry, like Jello or even ProZD, treat official translations like they’re this flawless, infallible interpretation. Even though translators, like Viz, openly use names like “Zolo,” “Vegerot (This is actually what they still call Vegetto),” “Kuririn,” and Viz is even the same translation that has Luffy yell out “Rats” after Ace’s death. While I know that the current translator of One Piece, Stephen Paul, is doing his best to give an accurate translation (he even asks Oda’s editors for what certain things should be called.) There is just no denying that there are plenty of lackluster official translations that need updating and I hate the mentality that people who enjoy collecting and reading physical manga should just “deal with it.” I know it’s a bit unrelated but I seriously hate how companies, like Viz, can’t even be bothered with giving their customers updated translations. Edit: To explain the Toei stuff. I think what he’s referencing is the fact that the One Piece anime likes to make female characters even bustier and curvier than they are in the manga.

They once mentioned that they would retranslate the manga once the series is finished. Viz Media occasionally retranslates older works, but the costs involved have increased significantly in recent years. With the popularity of the Netflix series boosting interest in One Piece, I believe they now have sufficient resources and a new fanbase that could make a retranslation of the manga possible. We just need to give them some time.

To be fair to Viz it's not as easy as just reprint new translations, there's lots of costs and shit to worry about, if they just carelessly patch the series without a proper narketing plan the series could become unprofitable and go out of print for english readers. While official translations are indeed flawed so are fan made ones, and often in more significant ways as there's even less checking and language expertise, so it's only natural to not view most weeb criticisms as valid when we're talking about the same guys who'd refuse to translate words like "nakama", "keikaku", or get rid of honorary suffixes. Also while Vegerot sounds like shit it gets across the fusion of the names Kakarot and Vegeta so it does make sense as an adaptation, the reason the anime went with Vegeto was because of how the name sounds in Japanese, but there it made more sense cause they say Kakarotto instead of Kakarot, so to the Japanese audience the fusion of names is clear, to make Vegetto make more sense in english they'd have to change Kakarot to Kakarotto, but that's unlikely to happen because of how used fans are to the names we got now. As for Zoro the zolo issue was kinda out of their control as 4Kids changed the name to avoid copyright disputes, and mistakes with romanizing names happens in fansubs plenty, not to mention times where the error comes from the Japanese source, like Bulma who's name should be Bloomers to follow the underwear naming scheme of her family, but Toriyama pretty much sealed the Bulma misspelling by writing it on the dress she wore on her first appereance.

Oda deliberately made the fight between Luffy and kaido turn to silliness because he wants one piece to always be fun, and he didn't want to devolve the series into power levels and everybody just getting stronger. One piece is specifically kept lighthearted. EDIT: I could probably go for several hours on just how awful Jello Apocalypse' video is. Oda has a variety of really strong female characters, multiple queer characters (including Bon Clay, who is often a fan favorite), and so much more... but the women have bodacious bodies and are often flirty. I'm also willing to bet Yamato isn't liked because she declared herself a man, but still LOOKS like a woman. >.> Also, Yamato is unlikely to be another Straw Hat, because she has major obligations as a guardian of Wano and advisor to Momonosuke. I actually can't think of a role that's missing from the Straw Hats at this point, as Jimbei being the Helmsman was seemingly the last unfilled role for a crewman.

I didn't start liking one piece. I didn't like it when I was really young but I started watching it with my Grandpa and then when he passed away. I continued watching it and I realized just how beautiful of a story it was. It's not like dragon ball z. With sometimes slightly confusing power levels are meaningless fighting. It's a lot of goofy stuff, but also heart warming adventures. And never in my life did. I think I would cry over a ship or still continue to cry.😢

It's not? It just transitioned into novels, because animating a series is majorly expensive. The Kickstarter for the first book kicked off massively to the point that the next book is already greenlit, as well as a novelization of the animated episodes.

@JoshtheOverlander So a few things. 1) Jello himself has stated he has a limit to how long he'll work on a series (being 4 years), so that probably is not good news for EE. Which shouldnt be a problem considering he has the footnotes for the seasons in the form of Anime Campaign, yet still struggles with the execution 2) Second, I ABSOLUTELY agree in regards animation taking long, but looking at EpithetErased, if you dont count the intro or boss cutscenes, the animation is essentially a motioncomic with minor rig animations(Not a bad thing, as it makes it stand out). In fact because its animated like that, it seems WAY easier to work on and upload. Especially when compared to a show like Vox Machina, a tabletop inspired show with full on animation and to my knoweledge is in its third season. Id also like to point out Vox Machina came out around 2022 and just finished season 3. While EE came out around 2019 and is in two seasons in cartoon and in book form. Which leads me to my last thing. 3) the book series to me seems like a desparate move on Jellos end. Now if it was JUST the book in physical, that would be a good idea, except for the digital where he has voice actors in monologuing. Correct me if Im wrong, but I feel as though that would be MORE expense than animating it, especially when you consider hes printing physical book copies and some of the VAs are pretty high profile, which I bet thats just as expensive. To me it seems like he's in the same exact position, but changed his medium. Usually if you have a show or product, you do your best to not change the medium on a drastic level, especially considering I doubt EVERY fan of EE is gonna buy the book just like that.

Heck, when he "helped" with the "translation" of a certain anime, he went out of his way to giddily say that he "corrected" a lot of the content being presented to us. The joke comes from how in one Q&A when asked about who his assistants are, Oda makes a joke that involves avoiding answering the question. It pissed off Jello and the other bookclub readers at the time that silly/perverted jokes kept cropping up, but a serious one that would be great to show respect to his employees got swatted aside.

To add to the other comments, Oda has actually been unusually open outside of One Piece SBS about how much of an impact his editors have had, which is not as common as one would think. He has credited them with straight up story beats. We know of at least one major story beat (shanks losing his arm) and multiple characters (many of which Jello called unnecessary funnily enough) that happened because of his editors inspiring him and making suggestions. There is even a few interviews with Oda and his editors and each time they seem to have a good working relationship.

I usually like Jello’s videos and I even liked Epithet Erased despite it being very low budget, but this video kinda misses the mark. I wanna give the benefit of the doubt, as I think some moments here are just bad jokes rather than genuine criticisms (not all moments but some here) but stuff like making fun of Oda’s art and health after an eye surgery and working on One Piece for decades and reducing characters like Carrot to being “sexualised” minors for… having tits, I assume I don’t really remember any sexualised moments for Carrot unless Jello was reading One Piece on rule34, feel a bit mean spirited while also not being funny. This is definitely a low for Jello as much of the criticisms are just made up at best or actively accusatory at worst.

@carcinogenetricist2993 what women in one peace has terrible writing and what's the definition of good writing for you cuz if I didn't know better it just sounds like you hate women in fiction on a conceptual level for being women And to the second point where you home schooled as a teenager going through puberty cuz in my experience in high-school and the teens in that age range that go into the store I work at about 30-40 percent just grow that way and did end up being considered popular in their groups the same would go for anywhere in the world, then there is the outfits of the character and really that's more an irl society issue where women are wearing smaller and tighter close that show more skin in an effort to be edgey and attract a guy with and that gets style of dress gets put on the youth and the birth of mini short mini shirts and crop tops with cleavage windows are born non of which are in one piece for the most part and out of the 4 listed in the video characters the only one with an actual creditable issue with the fit is Rebecca and that's more due to its impractical look on the outset but then you remember armorment haki is a thing most armor being worthless at this point in the story and most characters male and female aren't wearing anything more than street clothes and the metal swimsuit starts making more sense as the function purpose is for outmanuering your foe in combat that and I think it also may be a dragon ball reference as kid chichi was also in effectively a swimsuit at a young age and luffys disguise was based of roshi. And finally making a product for a target audience is quite literally required to compete in an market oversaturated with teenage characters going on fantasy adventures a hook is required nowadays to even get people interested especially in a series going as long as one piece who needs to get new readers while maintaining old readers to maintain financial growth and teen boys want strong men sexy women and an animal companion as a hook and then they end up staying for the writing if it's good and if you can't understand basic fucking marketing that a teenage boy can understand you might have bigger problems like not knowing the definition of sexism or I don't know personal boundaries due to your inability to read a room
