I’ve been a personal trainer since 1999 and am currently 55 years old. I wish with all my soul that women wouldn’t focus on weight loss, but on health. The side effect of focusing on health, is a healthy body composition. “Weight” isn’t the goal, but rather a healthy body composition. Any client I’ve had that has a goal of a weight, eventually always fails. Every client I’ve had that focuses on health, succeeds. Lift heavy weights 3-5x/week, get moderate steady state activity like walking daily, drink water, get adequate protein as your number one food focus, take creatine until you die, eat Whole Foods that aren’t processed, sugar and alcohol are super bad for your body. Sleep is critical, like critical to health, and healthy body composition. Focus on your bone density, mobility, strength, muscle mass, low stress, happy relationships and gut and brain health and you will age like a buttery strong happy human! The number on the scale is the least interesting thing about all of us. Focusing on a number on the scale is a sure way to be unhappy.

Jennifer this is a great encouragement to those who struggle to lose weight. For 4 years the way I have controlled my mindless eating is through intermittent fasting. I no longer have blood sugar crashes. I am keto based, and I do not always eat low fat (though good fats) as the fat keeps me satiated and I limit myself to two meals a day. No snacking. Eat the first meal at 11 to 12 am and done no later than 6 pm. I know it is not for everyone. I am not overweight, but I will say at your age I never had an issue with keeping a flat stomach. I used to hear people say when I was younger, that when you become post-menopausal you will have a harder time getting off belly fat. I would scoff at that thinking; Oh, that is just an excuse. Well, I had to find it is true and the struggle at 67 is real. Add that on top of only being 5'1" and a shorter torso. Matters are made worse because I I cannot take my daily walks like I always did for the past almost 2 years. I have a bad knee and a knee replacement is coming up soon. Walking was a game changer in many aspects.
@JeniferJenkinsBeauty7 ай бұрын
Wow, sounds like you have amazing eating habits! That's awesome! 🙌 And I know what you mean about belly fat. I've noticed in the last year and a half or so, that all of my weight wants to settle in my belly. It used to go to my butt and thighs, but not anymore and it actually makes things so much harder for me to keep a flat belly. Not to mention my lack of energy lately. Like you, I used to scoff at talk like that, but the struggle is real as we age! Ugh! 😭❤🤗

Jenifer, thank you for this video. Your talk about discipline was so incredible that I wrote it down word for word. I do not have to lose weight, I am a lean 52 year old, but the key to staying lean has been this exact way of thinking about discipline, sacrifice and ultimately self love. While i eat a different diet than you, (high carb, low fat, plant based), it doesn't matter, the message is still the same. I have been following you since the beginning and love all your content.

Yes, I agree with everything you said. My husband and I have been going out every Friday night barring some unforeseen circumstance since we got married. It is our private date night where we come together after a week of work and just look at each other and talk. Those dinners usually start with a cocktail and maybe a glass of wine with our meal. Saturday is usually spent with friends or going to a concert/or movie and Sunday was always for our extended family. So, Friday night was and is ours alone. But lately the older I get, the less I am inclined to want that cocktail. The morning after for us both is getting worse the older we get, not to mention the calories we really don't need at our age. This will be the hardest habit to break. My husband is on anti-biotics right now for an eye infection for the next 2 weeks. This is a good time for me to give up the cocktail (a Cosmo) since he can't drink either. 🙂
@JeniferJenkinsBeauty6 ай бұрын
I know exactly what you mean! And it's funny because I used to REALLY look forward to Friday nights! It was my time to just unwind, relax my mind and let my hair down. It almost felt like a treat or a reward for a productive week. But in the last year, I just don't look forward to as much as I once did, and like you mentioned, the morning after isn't always the greatest. I'm never actually "hung over" and I still wake up fairly early (8:00am) to start the day, but I can definitely tell I drank the night before and my energy level is extremely low. Honestly, sometimes I feel like the only reason I still have cocktails every Friday night is because it's just become routine. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy it AT THE TIME, but as I get older I feel almost guilty about it. Like, I think about how bad it is for me, the inflammation it causes, and all of the damage that it can potentially do to my body. As a matter of fact, I think I actually might go down to every other week and see what I think. ❤🤗

I basically just switched out the bread and tortillas he used to eat for Keto Bread (A brand called Higher Harvest from H.E.B if you live in Texas) and Carb Balance Tortillas. And I also removed the sweets from his diet and replaced them with fresh fruit, low sugar yogurt, or protein shakes. So for breakfast he usually has 2 egg whites and 1 egg, with cut up ham and a little bit of cheese along with a shaken vanilla protein shake. (I use muscle milk zero sugar protein powder) For lunch he always has a turkey and reduced fat cheese sandwich with Low Carb Bread and light mayo, baked chips and half of a Honey Crisp Apple sliced up. And for dinner, it's always something different of course, but for sides we almost always have a side salad with Bolthouse Farms Yogurt Ranch mixed with regular Ranch to cut down on the fat...or we'll have sliced cucumbers with the same ranch mix....or raw mushrooms and carrots with the same ranch mix, and he always has a fruit of some sort...usually grapes or canned no sugar added mandarin orange slices. But I like to have those types of sides because it gives my kids nutritious foods to fill up on rather than something like tatertots or rolls or mac and cheese. Even though they still do get some of those things sometimes. But I think if you can eliminate sugar and carbs from breakfast, you're off to a good start because if you're body doesn't have sugar and carbs to covert into energy it has no other choice than to use any fat that you've just eaten for energy. And once it runs out of the fat you've eaten it has no other choice than to begin using your stored fat which is what we want. But sugar is probably one of the biggest culprits when it comes to weight. And you'd be surprised at how much sugar they put in treats for kids. Especially ones that you think might be semi-nutritious, like nutrigrain bars or yogurt. Hope this helps.❤🥰

Your video is great! For the commenters below, I disagree whole heartedly that people should “throw out the scale.” Stop telling people to stop focusing on a number. A number is a goal. It is a visible and tangible reality. It is a benchmark. Every woman knows “her number” she feels amazing at. That is healthy. Its more healthy than being over weight. You all know as soon as you throw the scale out you will NEVER hit your weight goals. My husband is a physician and kept telling me to stop “being a number” until he started to loose weight also. Then guess who was on the scale everyday! If you dont like the number its because you dont like your results and you need to modify things. Every scientist has a way to measure results. Besides, if you are not yet aware, skipping meals now and then is actually good for you. Most Americans should skip about 15 at once to heal their microbiome and insulin resistance. Shed some visceral fat that is toxic. Relieve your cardiovascular system. Being a little under weight is better for you than being over weight, and everything you learned in the 90s was basically wrong. Dont hate the messenger… this is Harvard’s doing.
@JeniferJenkinsBeauty7 ай бұрын
I agree with so many of the things you said! Honestly, I weigh myself every single day, and have for at least the last 25 years.😁 It keeps me on track. When I don’t like the number, like you said, I modify things. In a perfect world we would all eat clean and hit the gym daily, but for those of us who aren’t as committed, or would rather keep a balance that we feel we’re capable of upholding, beginning with simple steps and healthier habits that lead to weight loss seems like a good start. ❤️🤗

I can't do it =( I have been skinny my whole life. I'm going through menopause, I weigh more now than I did with my pregnancies. I actually look pregnant with this belly and it's hard. I have been trying everything nothing is working for me.

Hello sweet lady: I started following you many years ago for these types of videos!! I know you don’t track calories but I can only have 1,100 calories per day or I gain weight. (5’2” 63 yo 118 lbs with hypothyroidism). Do you have to keep your calories really low as well to maintain your 110 lbs? Trying to figure this all out, it’s been a struggle since turning 60!!! Lol. God bless!!

Yup…keep doing the same things, don’t expect anything to change…🤪 These are all really sold points of advice, for everyone. Anyone who doesn’t agree, is not being very honest with themselves…

It's hard to lose weight when you have an eating disorder. I'm a ARFID, been that way for years. At 66 I'm still thin and healthy. I just avoid some food as much as I can. I'm a hiker so there are foods that I eat for energy. I am so tired of seeing so many young people over weight on KZbin saying they are healthy. No FAT is NOT HEALTHY!

In pizza, the most fattening thing is the dough, i.e. carbohydrates, fats and meat protein make you lose weight if they predominate in the diet, this has been known for a long time, but for several decades, dietitians seem to have forgotten about it... So the fattier the cheese, the better!
