It wasn't a bit hit in theaters, but gained traction on video. At the time, people thought the references were dated, due to the first Star Wars trilogy ending years before.

The film cost over $22mil and only made $38+mil. Saved by cable and video. Dot Matrix was the late Joan Rivers. One condition Mel had to meet, per George Lucas, to get the rights to parody SW so closely was to not sell merchandise. That inspired Mel to fill the screen with unsellable merchandise. Michael Winslow made his name doing sound effects in the film Police Academy. The sirens doubled like French police cars. Daphne Zuniga is known for the films The Sure Thing (must see), Gross Anatomy (underrated), and TV's Melrose Place.

Mel Brooks actually went to George Lucas and asked his permission to make Spaceballs, and George said yes, but that Spaceballs couldn't have any merchandise beyond the home video releases, and ILM worked on some of the visual effects of the movie. Also the guy who says "We ain't found sh**" is played by Tim Russ, who is well known as Tuvok, one of the main characters of Star Trek: Voyager, and he guest starred on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and in the seventh Star Trek movie, Generations. Case-and-point, with a lot of cars and appliances breaking down quicker due to planned obsolescence, when something has problems or stops working we'll be like, "F***, even in the future nothing works!" Correct, but if I may...a better reference would be "Desperate Housewives." Brenda Strong (that Nurse) played the Spirit of Wisteria Lane Herself, Mary Alice Young.

Hi Jen!🙂Comedian Joan Rivers is the voice of Dot Matrix. The person that physically plays Dot is mime Lorene Shields. Yes, mime, not yours.😄She was one half of the popular entertainment duo of "Shields & Yarnell". Actor Michael Winslow who makes the funny noises became very popular doing that in the "Police Academy" films. He would reprise his act in 2021 on TV's "America's Got Talent". If you want to watch another shrinky 80s film some time like "Honey I Shrunk the Kids", I recommend "Innerspace" (1987). The sexy nurse is a young Brenda Strong from TV's "Desperate Housewives". There is an ACTUAL Star Trek TV actor in this film. It is Tim Russ (Black Hair Comb Trooper). He played Vulcan Tuvok in "Star Trek: Voyager" for 7 years. "Rambo: First Blood Part II" is a great 80s film.🏆"Beneath the Planet of the Apes" is pretty entertaining, but the first and third "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" are my favorites. The film was not a commercial success when it was released. It finished behind the Tom Hanks & Dan Aykroyd comedy "Dragnet" at the box office. However, since it's video release it has become very popular. Great reactions to this classic Mel Brooks comedy, Jen!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Another great reaction from Jen, always love watching her laugh. FYI Skroob is an anagram of Brooks 😀. A John Candy movie that is a must watch is Uncle Buck, probably my favourite alongside Planes, Trains & Automobiles.

From Wikipedia: The film made money, but had mixed reviews. Moranis claimed in a 2013 interview that he and Brooks had discussed a potential sequel, with Moranis pitching the title Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II. However, he and Brooks were unable to structure a deal that would allow the project to move forward.

Hey Jen. The actor from the Alien Chestburster scene was in fact John Hurt from Alien. That's why he said "not again". Also, the song and dance is a spoof of an old Looney Toons cartoon of Michigan J. Frog. The frog pops out of a box, grabs a cane and top hat, then sings that song, among others.

Michael Winslow who does all the beep beep beep sound. That is actually him doing all that himself. You should check out Police Academy. He does his impersonations in that movie too. He is a very funny comedian. My favorite John Candy movies you have to check out is Uncle Buck which is by John Hughes. Cool Runnings is another good John Candy movie

If you want more of the guy who did the sounds ( with his mouth) you should check out Police Acadamy ( 1984 ). He was huge back then just cause he could do incredible sounds during his standup. They also showed History of the World Part 1 another great Mel Brooks movie you should check out if you haven't yet. And yes the banter about when, now, then .... was a play on an old Abbott and Costello bit " Whose on First" Awesome reaction Jen :)

This one was a childhood favorite and is also my nephew's favorite comedy. It's such a weird combination of brilliant humor and so dumb that you just have to laugh. I especially love the "Aliens," scene and how they actually got John Hurt for it. 🤣 Mel Brooks films are always worth a watch. In addition to Blazing Saddles, I'd recommend Young Frankenstein, The Producers and Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

The guy who did the sound effects is a comedian called Michel Winslow. His most famous role is as Larvell Jones in the Police Academy series of movies, and TV show. As for movies you missed that this thing parodies, there's the Wizard of Oz (the scene leading up to the reveal of Yogurt) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (see below). The reason there was merchandising in the film was that in order to get permission for the parody at all, they couldn't _do_ any _real_ merchandising in the real world (as that would violate contracts that George Lucas had). Lucas also said they couldn't dress their main star like Han Solo... so they dressed him like Indiana Jones instead. Lucas reportedly laughed a whole bunch on seeing the movie.

18:50 - one little easy-to-miss bit from the "Comb the Desert" scene is that Dark Helmet uses the megaphone to talk to Colonel Sandurz, right next to him, while yelling at the far-away guys doing the combing.

31:33 "Are those the guys from it?" Essentially. The actor who says "Not again" is the exact same actor. The others in his crew aren't, and they aren't exactly lookalikes, but they're definitely "look-similars" with names that have some relation to their equivalent characters' names in Alien.

Loving the reaction again Jen! By the way, Schwartz is slang for male genitalia (hence the lightsaber hand placement and Dark Helmet's "choking" habits) but it was also Mel Brooks' attorney's name. So "may the Schwartz be with you" was also Mel Brooks saying "hope you have a great attorney".
@mkozlinski

You mean "Schwantz" (lit. tail). Schwartz (black) is Yiddish colloqualism for not quite legal stuff. Derived from the "black market" - "to schwartz something/someone through" meant to smuggle something or someone.

Mel Brooks loves to put obscure references in his films. When the Alien pops out of John Hurt's chest and then struts down the counter sing " Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my rag time gal" that is a reference to a Warner Brothers cartoon" One Froggy Evening". You will find these obscure references in all Mel Brooks films. You have to be an old codger(74) like me to get some of them.

Those were all look-alikes in the Alien part, except for John Hurt, who basically had the same role. He did this scene as a peronal favor to Mel Brooks.

Like pressed! Yes, Jen, more old Planet of the Apes series, please. In this film, did you catch the "Wilhelm scream" at 23:48? George Lucas liked to use that sound effect as kind of an inside joke, and I guess Mel Brooks used it as an inside-inside joke.
