Batman's plane is called the Batwing. _Batman_ 1966 is an intentional comedy, but all the actors play their roles seriously, which is what makes it so funny. It's such a fun watch.

Yeah, I like to recommend Batman '66. I think it's every bit as good as, say, Airplane! or the Naked Gun movies. (I'd say better, even than Top Secret!, another underrated camp/satire classic.) It's what Batman & Robin wanted to be.

@@chrisleebowers Might want to check your sources on that one cheif. Mark Canton, WB producer reached out to Princes manager Al Magnoli to do the score, because Prince was so prolific at that time after Purple Rain's soundtrack won him so many awards; and he thought he would be perfect to capture the energy of the script they were working on. And when presented with the idea Prince jumped at it because he, a black male, loved Batman and the idea of what the comic Batman stood for; he even use to play the 60's Batman theme on the piano when he was first learning to play the plethora of instruments he now wields. Then there was Tim Burton who during filming would use 1999 and Baby I'm a Star as temporary place holders for certain scenes, so when they mentioned Prince Burton also jumped at the chance to have one of his idols do a separate soundtrack. As for the doing three tracks in one night, maybe, but neither Prince nor Burton have claimed this in any of their interviews that I've seen and I've seen/read a lot of them, I'd dare say all of them. Also, no research in the comic world has ever "shown" that batman is not popular with minority males. Please cite your work on that one I'd be curious to see what state they did this "study" in and why. Sounds like a bad thesis topic for a business majors senior paper. They originally wanted him to colab with Michael Jackson but the two artists were in the middle of their silly 80's clash. Simply put, they choose Prince because the dude is stupidly talented and he could do no wrong in the 80's.

While Superman laid the groundwork for what comic book movies could be but Batman brought it up to another level. I think Nicholson plays The Joker the best of all of them. There's no tragic circumstances that create the monster... He just ends up dipped and surgically altered and the violence and madness that he always had inside comes out the rest of the way. He is by far the most dangerous and grotesque of the Jokers.

I think this is my favorite Batman movie. Keaton absolutely brilliant, the best costume (my opinion), Jack Nicholson as Joker is phenomenal. The score by Danny Elfman (who has worked with Tim Burton many times) one of the best in the franchise and Prince handling the songs. Its near perfect. Edit: the scene where the Joker fries the guy when he shakes his hand and then starts to talk to the corpse is one of a kind. Oh and the plane is called Batwing.

By far one of my favourite renditions of Gotham City. Tim Burton’s Gotham is an amazing mix of Art Deco, Gothic, and Industrial architecture to create a terrifying dystopian city which looks like it’s stuck between the 1930s and late 80s. This was very much inspired by the city depicted in the movie Metropolis. The Nolan films went for a more modern setting with Begins looking pretty good still had hints of Art Deco and Gothic but the two sequels lacked in this department, looked more like Chicago than Gotham City. I love the Nolan movies but not a big fan of it's Gotham compared to Burtons or The new Batman film. The 90s Animated Series would also use this same aesthetic naming it “Dark Deco” but the show dived more into the 1930s feel technically it took place in the 1990s but Gotham had this really cool aesthetic where 1930s fashion was still popular, people drove around in classic looking vehicles, and gangsters used Tommy guns and wore retro looking suits all very much something you’d see in the 1930s. But they’re was a hybrid so we also had computers and high tech equipment which looked both futuristic but retro at the same time alongside these 1930s inspired elements. The city of Metropolis (Superman’s home city) on the other hand is the complete opposite of Gotham. Metropolis goes for a more 1950s retro futuristic artistic while also having a lot of Art Deco. It’s the city of the future in the eyes of the 1950s. In the movies though Metropolis doesn’t look that different to New York or Chicago unfortunately we’re still to see a solid depiction of Metropolis from the Comics. Batman Live Action Movie Universes Burtonverse Batman 89 Batman Returns Batman 89 comic's Schumacher movies - Originally set in the same continuity as the Burton films, New Batman 89 comic's retcon these two movies. Batman Forever Batman & Robin Norlanverse - No connection to the Burton or Schumacher universes Batman Begins Batman The Dark Knight Batman The Dark Knight Rises DCEU - No connection to these other films, DCEU has no Batman film yet he appears in others. Batman Vs Superman The Justice League Reevesverse - No connection to the DCEU or other Batman films The Batman The Batman 2 (Confirmed)

This is one of my favorite movies of all-time. I'm kinda not sure why; I'm not a huge Batman fan. But something about it resonates with me in a way I can't articulate, in part because I don't really understand what it is. There are just so many lines and scenes in here that I enjoy. It also inspired the feel and look of "Batman: The Animated Series" which is perhaps the greatest cartoon of all-time. Definitely worth checking out (it technically lasted 4 seasons, but really 3; the 4th was done by an entirely different team so it's just not the same). It's a lot to react to, so if you're not interested enough to want to invest that much time in it, that's cool, but I'd still recommend you react to a few episodes; maybe have a poll with the 20 highest rated eps, and watch the top 5? Something like that. I really didn't like the 2nd movie, Batman Returns, at all. Near as I can figure, it just isn't really a Batman movie. Some people like it though; there's a surprising amount of people who like it better than the first, as far as I can tell. (Most of the time, it seems like there's a consensus in a situation like this, but with these two, while I think most people prefer the first, there's a fairly large contingent of people who prefer the 2nd.) So... I don't think it's a good Batman movie, because it's not really a Batman movie, but it seems to not be a bad movie. It's just not what I was looking for. I bring that up in part because I want to make a point about the 3rd movie, Batman Forever. First of all, real quick: fantastic soundtrack. It's not, like, Star Wars, it's doesn't have some iconic score, but there are few soundtracks - maybe none? - that is actually music from and inspired by a movie that are as good as Batman Forever's. But also... many people will tell you Batman Forever is bad. I respectfully disagree. While I agree that it isn't good, I'm not sure it's bad either; really, it's just fucking *weird*. But, to me at least, it's weird in an interesting way. If you're not interesting in watching it (maybe you don't intend to watch even the 2nd, or maybe you'll watch the 2nd and decide you're done after those 2, because those are the only 2 Burton/Keaton Batmen), fair enough. But I would say don't skip it just because you hear it's bad. (Skip "Batman & Robin" for that reason though. Honestly, it wanted to be campy but it wasn't, it was *terrible*. Instead, watch Batman '66; that found the perfect tone to be campy and funny and silly. Batman & Robin wanted to be Batman '66 but didn't come remotely close.) I honestly think Val Kilmer is really really good as Batman (although the material is... he deserved better). It's got such a weird tone, but it's weird/interesting not weird/bad (IMO, of course), and the cast... Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey, and Nicole Kidman, like Val Kilmer, do as much as they possibly could've with what they're given, I think. The only bad casting was Chris O'Donnell, whom I like enough but he's supposed to be, like, a 14-16 year old Dick Grayson but he's a 35 year old man. Just... an odd choice.

Julie's version dies and is succeeded by Eartha Kitt's version. I mention that because the movie chain that began with this one used to end with Halle Berry movie "Catwoman". Every instalment offers something a little different in terms of style (and quite often, in terms of who’s playing Batman), though the quality varies quite drastically. As for this first one, it’s still my favourite Bat movie. It’s so stylish, theatrical and dark, but also tongue-in-cheek. I think it’s also the best-designed Batman movie… and I was so happy to hear you call out the music, Jen, as it’s one of my all-time favourite movie scores! It turns the whole piece into a grand opera, and to be honest, we rarely experience such a pure and bombastic melding of sight and sound in modern movies. It all feels a little too intellectual these days… but that’s a whole different subject. Fun fact: it’s never made clear in the movie itself, but the money Joker hands out at the end is bogus. Remember how he said he wanted his face on the one dollar bill? Well, he did it! Every note has his face on, so the festival is his biggest gag - he tricked everyone to their deaths by playing on their greed. I’m not sure why this was left out of the final cut of the film, but it was probably for pacing. To be honest, the whole climax is a little messy, but the movie carries it off anyway.

What makes Keaton's version of Bruce Wayne such an amazing disguise is that, whereas Christian Bale went all-out with the drunken rowdiness, Keaton's Bruce is so unremarkable that you'd meet him once... then forget everything about him the moment he was out of sight. He's barely worth noticing in spite of all his money. Which is PRECISELY why no one in their right mind would suspect him.

This movie was huge, HUGE, back in 89. It was the first movie that took comic books seriously and us comic geeks loved it. Jack as the Joker, the sets, the costumes, the batmobile, Elfman's score, Prince's soundtrack, and let's be honest here .. Kim Basinger, everything was amazing. People got bent out of shape about Keaton ("Mr Mom is Batman?? What a joke!") until they actually saw him. I didn't hear many complaints afterward. I saw this one twice on opening day and nine times that summer and constantly listened to the Prince soundtrack and the Elfman score on cassette LOL Glad ya liked it, Jen!

The Batman movie serials were a serious, pulp/noir take on Batman in the 1940s. Superman was a serious comic book film. But Batman was, at the time, largely associated with the 1960s TV show in the popular consciousness. And that was campy goofiness. So it was nice to get a more serious version of the character on film.

I believe that this Batman laid the ground work for Batman: The Animated Series. The design of the Batmobile, the Bat wing, the look of the 30's in a modern setting. Also, the man who drew the cartoon for Knox was Bob Kane, the man who is credited with creating Batman.

My favorite superhero movie of all time. I love how it fuses the campy Batman of the 60's with the new darker Batman which emerged in the comics in the 80's, especially in how it portrays the Joker.

It's an _amazing_ coincidence that you're watching this, when just two days ago I introduced my son to this _'Batman'_ movie, and then the following three (though modern thinking is now that only this and the sequel are from _this_ universe, whilst _'Batman Forever'_ and _'Batman & Robin'_ are in a separate universe altogether; you'll see why, if you’re watching the rest)… My son now loves *Batman* but says that this movie, _'Batman'_ (1989), is actually last on his list, with the two aforementioned Schumacher films being his favourite (but then, they are definitely aimed more at younger kids, and my son is 8, nearly 9)! Anyway, I thought it's an amazing coinkidink that we watched _'Batman'_ two days ago, _'Batman Returns'_ and _'Batman Forever'_ yesterday, then _'Batman & Robin'_ earlier today, then you watch it this evening! Sending love from Nottingham, UK, from both my son and I. 🥰❤️🥰❤️ *P.S. -* It's _never_ mentioned, and it's really subtle, but the corruption of Gotham City is shown in the opening scene _before_ the family go down the alley & get mugged; a pr0$t¡tute literally ignored the parents & approached/propositioned _the little boy,_ a frickin _child_ who couldn't have been older than 11! _That's_ how far Gotham has fallen!

I was 19 years old in 1989 and lined up for the 11am premiere the day after my graduation Prom night. You had to be there the entire year of 1989- this was one of the most hyped up of films of the 80s! From marketing to the most teaser of snippets of previews (just enough to make us go wild- not enough to spoil a thing)... To MASSIVE Bat-Posters (literally just the Bat Symbol and the release date) that were hung from three story high buildings in downtown Toronto. You couldn't walk ten feet without seeing something Bat related! It was truly "Bat-Mania!" And at the same time- those of us like myself who grew up on the comics of no-nonsense Batman were terrified at what might come of the performance of Micheal Keaton (traditionally a comedic actor) who just played Beetlejuice the previous year... Was this going to be campy like the 1966 tv series??? We were wrong! Micheal Keaton knocked it out of the park! He *IS* Batman! That said... We did come away feeling the movie should have been named "Joker" as he had what seemed like twice as much screen time as Batman. And Tim Burton tweaked the story a bit- Batman's parents were not killed by The Joker (Jack Napier) in the comics- a thug named Joe Chill did that (and never became the Joker). However the Joker falling into the vat of chemicals bleaching his skin and turning his hair green is true to the comics... And the shot of Batman's parents being shot and the pearls of the necklace falling are ripped right from the pages of the comic books- brilliantly done! So the Joker killing Batman's parents gets a pass. And in the comics Batman has a "no killing" rule- so him killing Joker's cronies and the Joker himself strays WAY away from the comics. But again- this film set the bar for Batman films to come!

I was 10 at the time it came out. I too remember people really being upset about "The funny guy from Mr. Mom" playing Batman. They were worried about nothing. Keaton is still, in my book, the best Batman. The best Bruce Wayne was probably Bale. Worst Batman: Clooney, Worst Wayne: Kilmer (sadly). Again, only opinion.

So if you haven’t figured it out yet. They gave Jack Prosthetic Makeup to give him those very defined cheeks. The smile is permanently grafted to his face. Even when he’s angry he still smiles. Fun fact: he wears the layers of makeup for the flesh colored scenes. A base layer, the white, and an oil based flesh color. The rag he uses to wipe off the flesh color was soaked in alcohol. As well as the pitcher of water. It was alcohol. That way only the flesh color would wipe off leaving the white untouched.

I loved this movie when it first came out, but I loved 'Batman Returns' even more. It was wonderfully cast with Danny DeVito as the Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer was so lovable as Catwoman. She was a villain, but had a heart and it was exposed. She had a hard time trying to be who she was and her emotions showed that. As much as she wanted to be with Bruce, she just couldn't live with herself either way. In my mind, I always changed the story so that they knew they were both 'broken'. Also, Danny Elfman's score is a bloody marvel in both movies!

Small tidbits: The money Joker was dumping was actually fake. They all had his face on it and was part of a scene they cut. When the helicopter pilot was giving his time to arrival it was actually correct down to the second if you time it from that point. The Danny Elfman theme was so popular they used it for the Batman: the animated series a few years later.

Jen I was scratching my brain on your Jaws review video trying to figure out why I couldn't remember the "Jaws trivia" that i *HAD* to tell you, when I realized, that trivia was for BATMAN! Jen, this is not just one of my all time favorite 10 movies, this is a benchmark in my life. 1989, what a year to be 5 years old! Between this and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (have you reacted to that yet, btw?), plus The 'Burbs, Back to the Future Part 2, and everything else that came out that year. So here goes: The makers of Indiana Jones' fedora, Herbert Johnson Hatters in London, are also the makers of the Joker's hat (and every other hat in this movie)! They also did the hats for Who Framed Roger Rabbit? This was made at Pinewood Studios in London, and one of the biggest stages, the 007 stage, was used for the Batcave. Also done on the 007 stage was the medal ceremony at the end of the original Star Wars. AXIS Chemicals was shot at an abandoned power station in London, and Alien had just filmed there, and some of their set dressing was still there :) Some of the most iconic shots of Batman - basically his first shot when he raises his cape and intimidates the street thugs, many shots of him at AXIS Chemicals, shots of him in the cathedral and the final shot of the movie -- were not even Michael Keaton. They wanted Batman to have a graceful look, so they hired a British dancer to give him that graceful, elegant look. He's on instagram and is very fan friendly. What else can I say, but this movie owned 1989, and without this, we wouldn't have our modern era of superhero movies.

This is my favorite of the Batman movies. My friends and I had been worried since Michael Keaton was known almost exclusively as a comedy actor before this, so we were expecting something campy like the 60s TV show but we were all impressed with what we got from Keaton. Nicholson was great as the Joker, more whimsically homicidally insane. This is the only one of the Batman movies I like enough to rewatch when it's available, though I will watch the Val Kilmer one from time to time too since I have always liked Kilmer's style.

I remember the uproar when Michael Keaton was announced as getting the role of Batman. Darned if he didn't nail it. He was smart to duck out of the series after the 2nd movie, but this one remains a classic. Nicholson's take on the Joker was priceless. I would skip the rest of these older Batman movies and skip ahead to the Christian Bale movies, Jen. They are considerably darker but extremely well done. Really enjoyed your review!!😃

Jen, a quick back story of Bruce Wayne/Batman, his Father was Thomas Wayne a surgeon and socialite, one night after going to the theatre to see Die Fledermaus with his Wife (Martha) and Son (Bruce), he decided to take a short cut through an alley commonly known as 'Crime Alley', there Thomas Wayne was robbed was shot and his wife died from shock, when the child, Bruce looked at the killer 'Joe Chill' he got spooked and ran, it later came out that he was sent there to kill Wayne by a mob boss as Wayne was looking into some corruption which involved the mob boss. The boy Bruce vowed to fight crime from then on but not to kill as this would have made him like the person who killed his parents, one night in Wayne Manor Bruce was looking for a symbol to strike fear into criminals and a large bat smashed through the window so, get became Batman. This story was altered a bit for the purpose of this film.

Batman was created by Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger. The early 1940's comic books had a dark, Gothic, film noir feel. The 1965 Batman TV show starring Adam West was "light and campy". Frank Miller returned Batman to his dark, violent roots in the 1986 DC comic book The Dark Knight Returns. The Batman(starring Robert Pattinson) was released in March 2022.
