Another comment mentioned John Houseman as the driving instructor. Houseman was one of the most significant figures in American theater. Along with Orson Welles he co-founded the Mercury Theatre, and co-produced _Citizen Kane._ He was the first head of the Drama Division at the Julliard School. He founded The Acting Company with members of the first graduating class of the Julliard acting program, including Patti LuPone, Kevin Kline, David Ogden Stiers, and a dozen others. In his long career he produced or directed some forty Broadway plays and thirty-three films. It was only rather late in life that he began acting.

This movie and its sequels are based on the short-lived (but hilarious) TV show "Police Squad", also starring Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin.

The queen was played by Jeanette Charles who had a decades-long career on British TV - any sitcom or sketch show that needed the queen, that was her.

This movie was written & directed by the same three guys that wrote and directed "Airplane". Their names are, David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams. I went to high school with them in the 1970's in Milwaukee, Wi. Besides Airplane, they also did Airplane 2, The Naked Gun, The naked Gun 2 1/2, The naked gun 33/3, Kentucky Fried Movie several of the "Scary Movie" movies, just to name a few.

I love this movie. I saw it on VHS back in the days of maybe 1990 or something. I remember a few jokes from all those years ago. When looking closely at the baseball stadium scenes, I found out that the exterior scenes of the baseball stadium are at Angel Stadium. The interior ones are at Dodger Stadium, but it has the Angels playing. I wonder if this is some insult to the Dodgers or something. I'm not sure. I really love the scene with the harbormaster, exchanging the $20 bills. And by the way, I bet the MLB would like to hire The Queen as a pitcher. Very tricky pitch.

And it's worth rewatching many, many times. The large number of background gags (and foreground - like walking around the set walls, which you magnificently caught) will make this so much more fun. "Use your open eye, Frank" you caught, too. AIRPLANE II isn't worth watching except to say "I have" but the next two NAKED GUNS are good enough.

I think you should see the science fiction classic Forbidden Planet if only to appreciate what was perhaps Leslie Nielsen's greatest serious dramatic role. It's amazing that it took so long for anyone at Hollywood to decide that he should try something silly. What really impresses me is rock and roll royalty like Priscilla Presley turning out to be a great comic star in her own right. Johnny English Reborn is another comedy about an incompetent hero type interacting with the Queen. Thanks, Jen!

The baseball player that was trying to kill the Queen is Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson who was playing for the California Angels when the movie was made.

Those red things were pistachios. Back in the day, imported pistachios were dyed red when shipped and often left a little bit of dye on your fingers and mouth (not nearly as much as they had on them). The gun the bad guy had was a micro uzi.

I also recommend the Police Squad series that these movies were based on. The series was cancelled after only 6 episodes; the show was ahead of its time in my opinion. The pilot is a little uneven, but the series quickly hits its stride. They have to pack their jokes into only 22 minutes per episode, so it's non-stop gags. I also second Top Secret. It's my favorite of the slapstick movies from this era.

Oh, thank you, Jen. You are the first reactor in quite a long while who has actually recognized who the world leaders are in the opening bit. Most of the young pups don't even seem to recognize them. Ricardo Montablan's gun was a Micro Uzi. And yes, those were all actual famous sports broadcasters, and the players were all actual players. Especially Reggie Jackson, who was one of the biggest baseball players in the US for a time. For good baseball flicks, The Natural, Bull Durham, For the Love of the Game, and of course, Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch.

"Nordberg" was a large billboard on some kind of factory visible when driving south on I-43 towards Chicago near Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA. I always had assumed it was the name of the plant. The guys who wrote this movie - Zucker, Abraham's, Zucker - grew up in Shorewood, WI, which is also on I-43 but just North of Milwaukee, WI. As kids, for some inexplicable reason, we thought the Nordberg sign was funny. I assume that ZAZ thought the same thing and used it in this movie. I assume, I do not know.

5:08 "'Nordberg.' What kind of _name_ is that?" Well, that part's actually kind of odd. It's German. It means "north mountain." I know, because I've been studying German, and one method I've been employing is taking kids movies that I know and watching them in German. You know the movie _Frozen?_ The German-dubbed translation for that title is _Die Eiskönigin._ There's a scene in the movie that has the younger sister, Anna, at a shop in the woods, crossing paths with a mountaineer named Kristoff. The shop owner asks Kristoff where the sudden cold snap is coming from and he replies, "From the north mountain." That scene, with the German dubbing on, has him replying, "Von Nordberg." This method of taking kids movies (specifically _kids_ movies) and watching them in a language you're trying to learn is a method I heartily recommend. This way, each word, the moment you hear it, is anchored to an emotionally significant scene, and because it's a kid's movie, the grammar and syntax are simpler.

Don't know if you noticed but these movies (Airplane, Naked Gun, Hot Shots) always have jokes hidden in the credits. The NG sequels are definitely worth watching. And Hot Shots. Airplane sequels...not as much, but they have their moments.

6:18 as someone who has worked a sound board for large meeting a press events this has happen to me twice. You are listening at all the channels so you can hear the speaker and then this happens. You jump up and make sure all the channels are down and that it is not going to tape or out over the house sound. then you turn off you solo so that you don’t have to hear it.
