Having lost my wife to cancer, you can well imagine how the opening of this 'action' movie tears me apart every time I see it. That sniper shot into the pillow next to his head was to alert him of nearby danger. You can see his skill with the longer range shots in both of the warehouse taking out the body guards holding him or the people protecting the son, not missing a single time. He was John's friend and gave his life up knowing the other crowd would be out to get even with him too, and they did.
@baeleth
@baeleth 2 жыл бұрын
@@Caseytify also, the Continental is neutral, safe ground. Shoot a pillow as a warning, they're probably gonna let that slide. Kill someone who is on Continental property, even if they're breaking the rules, and you lose your membership and all protections that brings. John would have probably been okay if he'd killed Miss Perkins in self defense, though.

The thing about Officer Jimmy is that... it really uncomplicates life to just leave John alone. I don't know if it's meant to be just him or the whole department, but Jimmy clearly knows John well enough to realize he *couldn't* arrest him even if he wanted to.

I always assumed Jimmy is either on the payroll of John, or the Continetal... or both. For John it would make sense to have some cops from the area he lives in on his payroll in case "something" happens, after all, he was a retired hitman with a long tail of "potential" enemies. For the Continental it would make also sense, they surely would want to keep an eye on one of the best hitman, so that when "something" happens and said hitman comes out of retirement, they can provide the best possible "services"... one way or the other.
@baldawen
@baldawen 2 жыл бұрын
@@craid23 While it would make sense I honestly really doubt that John Wick had anyone on payroll. From how the interaction went it seemed that Jimmy was just "in the know" (but yeah, probably a dirty cop on the organisations payroll). Which isn't really surprising since apparently almost everyone who has any power is "in the know" from how all the other movies went.
@craid23
@craid23 2 жыл бұрын
@@baldawen Mh, I wonder how anyone in that world could be "just" in the know without being paid to stay silent? Besides that, being on someones payroll doesn't necessarily require an exchange of money, it can also be an exchange of someones life, at least in my opinion. Think of the bouncer scene. John and the bouncer clearly have a silent agreement like: "Keep your mouth shut, play along and I let you go home so that you can enjoy dinner with your family and loved ones." Its the same deal, just with a different currency.

A nice detail that often gets unnocticed is when Viggo confronts his son after learning about what he has done to John, he pours both of them a glass of vodka, he never actually drinks from that glass, instead he pours a separate drink after hitting Iosef. Why? Well, the meaning of sharing a drink with someone is that are good company at that time. He pours a second drink deliberately because he wants Iosef to know how low in regard he considers him at that moment, that he wont even share a drink with his own son.

Very true. Actually, drinking right after cheering is a sign of good gesture. Placing down your drink inbetween a cheer is a sign of ill gesture. Meaning you "cancel" your good gesture. IIRC it comes from ancient times where one would poison one's own drink and cheers a "target". This would be so as to splash from your own drink into the other's. Then you wouldn't drink yourself.

To answer your question - The phrase "in for a penny in for a pound" is a British phrase dating back to at least the 1600's that referred to the insane interest rates associated with debt/loans. It used to mean that if you owed one penny you might as well owe a whole British pound, because that's probably what you'd be paying on that loan. Nowadays its meaning has shifted to more of a "It's gone this far, might as well go all in", or something like that

Not quite correct. The earliest documented use of the phrase is from the 17th century, Edward Ravenscroft's comic play Canterbury Guests in 1695. The reference the loans is not confirmed but doesn't relate to interest rates but for penalties for non payment. They were the same regardless of amount borrowed - hence if you borrowed penny you may as well borrow a pound .

Consider when you go through changes in life, like moving your home, and it's always more expensive than you planned for. This phrase is very appropriate for those moments... when you're taking out your wallet to pay for that extra cleaning bill, or replacing damaged furniture, or pay the extra storage charge. You're already committed ("in for a penny"), and you're too far to turn back now... your only choice is to keep going and paying for it as you go ("in for a pound")

The two to the body, one to the head thing is a real world shooting technique. Best known as the Mozambique Drill, also called the Failure To Stop Drill or the Armor Drill. Two rapid shots to the body, and if they don't fall (due to being hopped up on drugs, adrenaline, or wearing a kevlar waistcoat), one to the head. He took some advanced shooting classes as part of th we prep for the role. The cool shotgun is a Kel-Tec KSG. If John found out what Love is, then why was he chasing a stupid boy, killing the guards who did not attack John, but protected the boy? Why does Keanu often talk about forgiveness, but John could not forgive and re-educate a stupid boy whom no one loved? The boy didn't look like a villain, he was just a stupid, ill-bred puppy. John Wick is an experienced wolf! If an adult wolf devours a puppy, then the wolf turns into a dog. Either this dog will be shot because of rabies, or they will wear a muzzle and a leash. The tattoo on John Wick's back spells "Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat", which means 'Fortune favours the bold', which very much defines his whole character. Also, at 11:05 the dinner reservation for 12 is a secret language for the cleanup crew that there are 12 bodies to be disposed of. Also, sorry again, the scene outside red cricle when John asks Francis in russian about losing weight, he replies in about 60 kgs. It's again a secret code language by which Francis tells him that there are about 60 people inside.😊 The scene where Viggo smokes weed is a representation of a father who mourns his child because he knows that now nobody can save him as 'Babayaga' knows where he is, just like in the russian folklore where the witch, when realises ones location, will sooner or later abduct the child. Also lot of people don't understand or get it but at 18:57 John just shoots Iosef and doesn't tortures him because as much as he wants to he realises this as a professional assassin that what Iosef did was because he didn't knew who he was. So he took his revenge as professionally as he could have. That's not the same case with Viggo in the final fight because by killing Marcus he broke the code and now it was if not personal, but neither professional, to kill him with more aggression.

It is about brothers (who are Catholics I believe who seek retribution and revenge over mob killings.... similar story I think, and there are 2 and maybe 3 movies. 1996-1998 is the original I think). I also think they have this tattoo and maybe a tattoo of a cross on their body, and they quote this phrase or the one that translates to blessing the person in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in Latin during parts of the movie. I may be wrong on that, but I haven't watched those movies in 15+ years, and they are rarely on or discussed by reactors because they are obscure and older. I know that is difficult for you being a reactor. Having said that, I'll say that I'd watch your reaction because as far as I know you would be the only person I've seen react to it. There are many parallels to the John Wick movies, but the storyline of vengeance and the way the action sequences are filmed and portrayed are different. I'm willing to bet you could find an old trailer to watch and read an old synopsis without ruining the movies much and then determine if you'd want to do them on KZbin. But, if you liked John Wick, you'd likely enjoy Boondock Saints.

A couple fun facts about John Wick: 1.) The tattoos on his back says "Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat", which means "fortune favors the bold". This lends credence to a theory that says John was a former US Marine. Fortune favors the bold is the motto of 3rd Battalion - 3rd Marines, which is nicknamed "America's Battalion", out of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. 2.) John's method of two shots to the body and one shot to the head is a direct reflection to Keanu Reeves' training with Taran Butler from Taran Tactical, who is a world-renowned competitive shooter and weapons instructor for various A-list actors (who include, but are not limited to, Will Smith, Chris Hemsworth, and Halle Berry). This method is known as the Mozambique Drill, as is one of the many basic handgun drills first taught in competitive shooting.

actually, it means "fortune favors the brave"; "fortune favors the bold" is audaces fortuna iuvat. the military tend to mess Latin up a bit. take the navy seals motto. "semper fidelis" does mean always faithful, but when they shorten it to "smper fi" they change the meaning, significantly. since "fi" means to denounce or fantasy (as in sci-fi) the closest meaning would be "always lying" or more like "pathological liar"

And when he met his wife he wanted out of the business. so this man Vigo gave him an impossible task. if he could pull it off he would be allowed to retire and live a normal life with his wife(which he did manage to pull off) Thats why everybody is afraid of him.

This Movie is set in a fictitious world where the criminal element is the ruling class and the "legitimate" government just takes a back seat and stays out of the way. You kept asking about who John really was. He is the baddest of the badasses, baba yaga, the boogieman's boogieman. The most interesting thing about this movie for me is that Keanu Reeves can actually shoot that well. Check out the youtube videos of his training. He's good. Your dog liked it. :)

Good reaction. We all feel the same about the dog. You asked why he seemed to always shoot multiple time and especially 2 to the body and then the head...the LA police department began doing that during the rise of PCP. Two shots to the chest wouldn't slow down someone raging on PCP so they created what is now "2 to the chest, 1 to the head" as it guaranteed to stop someone who seemed impossible to do so. This was later adopted by many including the military. I was in the Marine Corps and I was taught this history lesson.

In real life there are some freak occurrences when people have survived a bullet to the brain. If you can afford it, use an extra bullet or two to make sure the job is properly done. Then there is the thing with the previously mentioned PCP. Personally the two to the chest would be for me to knock the air out of the target(vest). Bullet to the head to take him out. Except I would not be able to hit a barn door even if my life depended on it.

That puppy's death affected you strongly, so imagine how it would affect you if it were a present from your recently deceased spouse. That's what pushed John over the edge. This movie is very violent, but it's done so well that it's hard to turn away. The sequels are even more violent, if you can believe it, but still great. Can't wait for the last two (being filmed back to back). The guy who is in charge of the clean up crew that cleans up John's house (Charlie) is played by the same guy that played the antagonist Luther in "The Warriors", David Patrick Kelly. He also played the creepy guy in "Dreamscape", a little heard of eighties sci-fi horror movie.

Have to agree, The Equalizer is a good choice for another great action flick. A couple of others that are great but have flown under the radar a bit, Unleashed with Jet Li and Grosse Pointe Blank with John Cusack. "In for a penny, in for a pound" is a way of expressing your committed to your course of action. Basically it's like saying I've come this far, can't really turn back now. Or that if you choose a particular path, that there's no return, your only way out, is through. You can also think of it in terms of a poker game and going "ALL IN"!

To my mind the best aspect of John Wick is that it inverts the traditional relationship between the protagonist and antagonist. Typically the protagonist is afraid of the antagonist and has to go beyond their former boundaries to overcome them, but in this movie the antagonist Viggo is scared of the protagonist John (once awakened from his normal life with his wife) and throws everything but the kitchen sink at him in an attempt to stop the ‘Buba Yaga’... all to no avail.
