OHMSS is one of the best Bond movies. Some hate Lazenby. But he was good for a first and only time out. But its an amazing movie!

General consensus seem to be he took the character too seriously and tried to play it straight. Bond is a boys-own-adventure, in no way based on reality.

@@Cheepchipsable That's only the consensus with some of the people who grew up on Roger Moore's campy antics.The early Bonds always had tongue firmly in cheek, but that's not at all the same thing as camp. You have to play fantasy straight to make it work. In fact, OHMSS may be the Bond flick that's most faithful to the source material, the only real rival being Craig's "Casino Royale". It's no surprise then, that those two are right at the top of most "Best Bonds" lists.

I think OHMSS is a good Bond movie but not great and unfortunately that’s mostly due to Lazenby; just didn’t buy him as Bond at all. I may have like the movie more had Sean Connery still been Bond.

I love the fight between Connery and Peter Maivia (a couch to the chest?). Who would have thought back in 1967 that the henchman's grandson would grow up to become The Rock? So cool and I just watched "Jumanji" again last weekend. Another great post, Jen. Cheers.

This is widely considered the movie that introduced ninjas to western audiences. I don’t think Jen recognized Blofeld as the same actor as the doctor from Halloween. Next movie is one of the true greats of the franchise. Can’t wait!

Yes Donald Pleasence the first actor to portray Ernst Starvos Blofeld where can see his face later played Dr Loomis in Halloween in 1978 and several sequels including Halloween: The Curse of Michael Meyers released in 1995 and passed away at age 75 the same year.

This theme song, as performed here by Nancy Sinatra, was the anthem of the men of the Silent Generation who were approaching middle-age when it came out. You couldn't have a more perfect metaphor for midlife crisis and longing for a new start. (It was used to great effect in a crucial episode of Mad Men.) (When Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was published, I was astonished at how well it tracked the lyrics to this song.) My entire adult life, if I was petting my cat in my lap, I'd find someone to stare at, and then, in my best imitation of Donald Pleasance, say, "This organization does not tolerate failure."

The volcano set costed as much as the entire budget for Dr. No. At the time this fact was cited as a prediction the franchise would continue indefinitely, though nobody probably realized actually how long. Several props were tried for the miniatures used for the space scenes. They settled for a salt shaker to represent the shuttle. During filming the Little Nellie scene, cameraman John Jordan lost his foot when he got too close to one of the SPECTRE helicopters. A conference for surgeons happened to be taking place nearby and he had the best care possible for the day. He went on to return to film, including On Her Majesty's Secret Service, before passing away a few years later. Albert Broccoli and Ken Adams were extremely lucky on this film, and not just it's success. On return from a location scout, they changed their flight. The plane they were originally scheduled for crashed with no survivors.

I think you're wrong about the salt shaker. It's Moonraker where they use this ingenious trick (you even said "shuttle" - there was no shuttle until the early 80s [Moonraker, from 1979, actually stole a march on NASA - Drax launched his shuttles before real-life NASA did!]

@@jazzx251 I got around to checking the blu-ray special features. They used the salt shakers in this film because it was easy to add salt and debris inside the shaker to make it look like exhaust. Moonraker on the other hand used actual models and was shot frame by frame with an overlay, similar to how the Star Wars space scenes were shot, which was why they sent James Bond to space. Everyone was going to space after that film was a shocking success. I did make a mistake in calling it "shuttle" though.

Mr. Henderson (Charles Gray) is the narrator (The Criminologist - An Expert) in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and also plays Blofeld in Diamonds Are Forever. The "Chinese girl" at the beginning of the film was played by Tsai Chin who was the mother Lindo in the Joy Luck Club among many other roles.

Jen, the set design for this (and a lot of the other earlier Bond movies) was made by Ken Adams, also known for "the war room" design in Dr. Strangelove. He is an absolute master of his craft.

with this movie you also have the apex of one of my favorite tropes: The BPS trope Think for a minute about villains in movies and tv and how many of them are Bald, Pale, or Scarred (this includes amputees, wheelchairs and other disabilities). There's a lot. Blofeld is all three as well a being indistinctly European. Of course after Austin Powers every time I see him I keep waiting for Blofled to give someone the extended "Riiiight"

As a big Bond franchise fan, I’m glad to see you doing this series, and I hope you continue with it. I think you’ll find it interesting how the movies evolve, along with the different actors who play 007. Yes, some of the movies aren’t as good as others (that goes for the various Bond actors, as well) but imho, I don’t think there’s a one that I would classify as unwatchable. And if you want to see Bond actually go into space, just wait till you get to the Roger Moore era. Incidentally, “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” follows the plot of the original novel the most closely of all the films… and speaking of the original novels, I encourage you to give them a try, as well. They really give you a true sense of what the Bond character is all about that you can’t completely get from the films… and they’re not long, or difficult reads. Cheers! I think this soundstage is still one of the very largest in the world - it's called "the 007 stage" On your Bond journey, you will be seeing lots of massive villain's lairs - all filmed on this huge soundstage. In this one, they built a functioning monorail! And the white cat got scared when a bullet squib went off - it jumped out of "Blofeld"'s arms and was never seen again. Even though they looked and looked, the set was so massive that they had no chance of finding the cat - they had to get another one.

Connery left the series twice after You Only Live Twice and replaced by Lazenby who in return left the series after one film and Connery returned for Diamonds Are Forever which wasn’t my favorite Bond film and have been a big fan of Bond series for over 25 years. Sean Connery was offered $5.5 million in 1972 to return as Bond but refused and Roger Moore took over as Bond officially when was cast to star in his debut film as Bond in Live and Let Die.

This movie was remade 10 years later as The Spy Who Loved Me with Lewis Gilbert directing both films, they just substituted a submarine swallowing oil tanker for a space capsule swallowing other space capsules.

Aaah, You Only Live Twice. Probably my favourite Bond movie. I went to a lecture back in the 1980's given by Wing Cmdr Ken Wallis. He talked about Little Nellie and his involvement in the making of the movie and showed a film about her.

Another brilliant review Miss MoneyJenny. To answer your question, sumo is still the national sport of Japan. Both the wrestler giving Bond his ticket, Sadanoyama, and the wrestler behind him, Taiho, were top rank in the sport (Yokozuna) and the grandson of Taiho is in sumo's top division today. What you see filmed here is an actual all day exhibition, as the wrestlers did not want to put on a 'staged' performance. The sport is steeped in tradition and has changed very little over the years, so what you saw is pretty much exactly what sumo looks like today.

At the time You Only Live Twice had the largest budget and it showed. You'll have to wait for Moonraker for Bond in Space. On Her Majesty's Secret Service was supposed to follow Thunderball but was moved back due to unforseen location issues. You might notice some continunity problems but it does not ruin what many consider one of the best, if not the best, Bond films in the franchise.

It was originally meant to follow Goldfinger and even featured at the end credits in some of the early cinema reels, which can still be seen on early VHS copies. However, Saltzman and Broccoli struck a deal with Kevin McClory, who owned the Thunderball copyright, and TB replaced OHMSS. It was at that point that OHMSS was then shifted after TB, but due to the lack of snow in Europe the following year YOLT replaced it.

You're really getting into these. It's fun to see. On Her Majesty's Secret Service has a new Bond. It's not a great movie, but it's the most important story in the arc of all the pre-Craig movies. And this wasn't the last Connery Movie. The book was VERY different from this, and it ended in a way that made it doubtful there would be another .

There was a very close call that almost got the film cancelled and the entire franchise ended. Producers Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, set designer Ken Adam, screen writer and director Sir Lewis Gilbert and cinematographer Freddie Young went scouting Japan and were due to next fly to Hong Kong, but cancelled at the last minute to watch a ninja demonstration. Just as well that they did because the plane they were supposed to be flying on crashed near Mt. Fuji due to turbulence, killing everyone onboard.

I did promise you you'd get a Blofeld face reveal and an awesome lair in this one. Knew you'd enjoy it! Also, bit of trivia: the volcano lair set alone cost as much to make as the ENTIRE first film! Really looking forward to what you think of "Majesty's". Without spoiling anything, it's a much more serious take on Bond and has recently been given a "reevaluation" of sorts and most Bondians consider it one of the best in the series.

You have to do all the bonds its needed now ;) the guy who plays henderson is rather unique in the bond series, wont spoil it but it worth remembering, and you may recognise the voice of This number 1 think Halloween

While filming the helicopter fight over the volcano, cameraman John Jordan was leaning out of a helicopter to get a shot. Another helicopter got too close and its rotor cut his leg which had to be amputated. Three years later he was filming "Catch 22" and was sucked out of the door of the camera plane and fell to his death. He preferred not to wear a safety harness when getting his aerial shots and his mobility was impaired by his prosthetic leg.
