Hi Jen, Since you seem to enjoy soundtrack composers, you may want to check out "Kundun" (soundtrack by Philip Glass) and "The Last Temptation of Christ" (soundtrack by Peter Gabriel). Both are amazing, but lesser known, Scorsese films.

I always like Mark Ruffalo's reaction at 11:35 when Leo reaches across the table aggressively. He grabs to restrain him and if you watch him he looks over to (I presume) the guards and staff. When watching for the first time and just thinking he's Leo's partner it looks like he's just kind of like "sorry my partners getting carried away here" but with hindsight and knowing he's part of the experiment it's more like he's telling them it's under control and not to step in to restrain Leo. It's a great little clue about what's going on that doesn't really stand out on first viewing.

One of the best twist endings ever, also Leo’s acting when he saw the kids in the lake and realized that they were dead was so heartbreaking.

That last line sealed the whole movie for me. Just a great film between the older style, darker strings dominating the sound track and just the over all tone of filming. Glad you got to enjoy!

25:18 He never saw Chuck's body at the bottom of the cliffs. It was an optical illusion. Once he climbed down to that spot we see how the stones were somehow bleached in a vague shape of a body. *EDIT:* _"He's faking!"_ Bravo Jen! Such a great way to end it!

Yeah I'm convinced that the real twist of this story is that at the end he is cured. He is smart enough to manipulate them so he gets the lobotomy and lives as a good man. To accept the cure means spending the rest of his life as a monster and he doesn't want that. The fact that he was a patient all along is a decoy twist. Lots of people get so distracted by that twist that they miss the significance of the conversation at the end.

Yes! This is one of my top, all time, favourite films. I love psychological mindbenders and this may be the best of them. I'm so glad you caught the whole ride, including the final line. The music in this is amazing, and the piece they use during his flashbacks (On The Nature of Daylight) just destroys me, emotionally.

This might be the most underrated Scorsese / DiCaprio film. Great location of an island during a storm to induce anxiety as well as the score, acting and plot....all make for a perfect psychological mystery. The 2nd watch you really pick up on the small things especially how his partner acts through out the film. The first major giveaway was him struggling to hand over his firearm to the guards in the biggening.

Jen, this film is based on a novel by Dennis Lehane, who also wrote the novels “Mystic River” and “Gone Baby Gone,” both adapted into excellent detective/crime films. Mystic River won multiple Oscars and was directed by Clint Eastwood (he doesn’t appear on-camera in it). Gone Baby Gone was the directorial debut of Ben Affleck and also received critical acclaim.

Some fun facts for you Jen. The title is an anagram of "truths and lies", and "truths/denials" Through most of the story line, it is cloudy and the rain turns heavier as the story gets deeper. The sun only comes out in the final scenes. This is another reference to Freud, who described the subconscious as a confusing cloudy weather in opposition to the clear skies of the consciousness.

You completely nailed this. From start to finish. You are one smart cookie Jen. It was a lot of fun watching you get so into this absolute mindfck of a movie. The end line is something that is lost on so many reactors, I am so happy you caught it. And yeah, the music goes hard for this. Very dark and brooding. There is a game from awhile back called "Outlast". Gives off the same trapped in the asylum vibes. Honestly more terrifying to me than 95% of"Horror" these days. To be a prisoner of your own mind is far more scary a concept.

Thank you for reacting to one of my all-time personal favourite psychological horror drama films which is a rarity of Martin Scorsese to direct given his high profile for Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino and recently Killers of the Flower Moon. It took me 3 times to watch the film to see the signs that Teddy Daniels/Andrew Laeddis (cool fictional character names) is not who we thought he is. At the end of the film, his last words “What could be much worse in this place: live as a monster or die as a good man” is an indicator that Laeddis opted out for the “lighthouse icepick” due to the fact he got to the point of no longer handling the trauma of killing his wife for killing his kids and not wanting to regress restarting the entire cutting-edge roleplay all over again. As much as I know that it was all a roleplay: I loved the scene of Dr Rachel Solando in the cave, got a feeling it’s real (yet Dr Cawley brushed it off as fake hallucinations in Laeddis’ mind) as I could see this play a role in the plot of a continuation miniseries that I call “Escape From Shutter Island”. No matter if he was thinking of something in the past that’s true or not - the US army liberation of Dachau (among the early Nazi campsites to appear in the Holocaust) resulted in the soldiers and surviving Holocaust prisoners participated in a revenge killing (execution squad-esque) on the camp guards except those who faced the music in the criminal courts. It did happen in our world. An investigation conducted by US army Lieutenant-colonel Joseph Whittaker was suppressed by US army general George Patton and a Bavaria governor to cover up what Laeddis described as “not warfare but murder [on both sides]”. I do believe Laeddis’ involvement in the Dachau liberation and revenge killings was true.

The dream sequences with Leo are some of my favorite scenes of all time. Especially the one where hes talking to his wife. So much surrealism, which is interesting because its a big departure from Scorsese's normal style. I can't think of really any other scenes hes directed that are remotely similar.

Great reaction to a superb film! I especially enjoy Jen's homing in on the music as usual. Shutter Island has a power score indeed! Although it's funny how you still worried about the cigarette near the end, even after everything had been revealed and Leo's concerns about being drugged were shown to be a hallucination or way of dealing with trauma in his mind. I also feel like this is one of those movies that could use more than 40 seconds of discussion afterwards, since there's so much content with the narrative, history, mental health, etc.

Great pick. This movie is so incredible. The subtle hints, the acting its so well done. And the dream sequences and how it all comes together in the end its one of the best revelations in cinema. In my opinion, JSA and Oldboy are masterpieces of cinema, Oldboy is often in the top 10 of best movies ever made lists.

14:40 Yep. Happened at Dachau. There isn't a specific consensus on what happened; there are several stories of US soldiers killing surrendered camp guards, as well as the camp prisoners beating guards to death... The Army conducted an investigation & recommended court martials, so there's likely some credibility to the stories (probable cause, for sure), but General Patton (under his authority as recently-appointed Military Governor of Bavaria) chose to have the charges dismissed... "Did this really happen?" Yeah it was the Holocaust and more generally abandoned Nazi concentration camps. The West didn't capture too many death camps. That was a horror more to the east for the Soviets to find. It was often forced labor in inhuman conditions with poor clothes and minimal food. Some camps were "liquidated", aka killed everyone, and some the Nazis just abandoned. If you want a look at what it was like Schindler's List is pretty good

the guard execution was more or less historically accurate.- It was the foregoing incident which has given rise to wild claims in various publications that most or all of the German prisoners captured at Dachau were executed. Nothing could be further from the truth. The total number of German guards killed at Dachau during that day most certainly did not exceed fifty, with thirty probably being a more accurate figure. The regimental records for that date indicate that over a thousand German prisoners were brought to the regimental collecting point. Since my task force was leading the regimental attack, almost all the prisoners were taken by the task force, including several hundred from Dachau. - Felix L. Sparks, dachau liberation.

More Ben Kingsley - Sexy Beast with Ray Winstone (Departed) - iconic and wierdly funny gangster movie. - Schindler's List - Species - fun and sexy alien romp with Michael Madson and Forest Whittaker.
