In college, a friend of mine loved the Indy movies. He had just watched Temple of Doom, and was mindlessly mopping the floor in the dorm building as part of his student job. He thought he was alone, and was mumbling "Kali ma shut de day" or whatever from the heart pulling out scene, because he thought it sounded neat. He realized someone was behind him, turned around, and saw an Indian student standing him with a horrified look on his face. He asked why he was chanting that, and eventually, explained it was asking the god Kali for power, which is kind of creepy in Indian culture. Good laughs all around.

@@bryangold9616 - I only recalled that the dummies in the falling raft had to be perfectly balanced in it to have a chance to survive. Most of the tests resulted in the inflatable raft tipping over and nose-diving, causing the dummies' accelerometers to indicate far too much G-force on impact - since they ended up falling out of the tipped raft. Pretty sure they eventually readjusted and locked the dummies in at the perfectly calculated spot and it then kinda worked due to not tipping and plummeting. Of course, that would be practically impossible to do on the fly, as in the movie.

Marion's in Nepal, still. This is 1935, one year before Raiders of the Lost Ark, which took place in 1936. Last Crusade takes place in 1938 and Crystal Skull is in 1957. Oh, I've always liked Willie. She's an indoor girl, and a "fish out of water" - compared to Marion, the two-fisted drinking, strong woman. They wanted a love interest the complete opposite of Marion. And Willie lends herself to a lot of fun physical comedy. She also redeems herself in the end too, even punching a thuggee herself!

As noted, this actually takes place before the events of "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Willie is supposed to be annoying, unfortunately Cate Capshaw played the role so well it destroyed her career. Temple is actually my favorite of the trilogy but you do have to accept Willie for what Spielberg and Lucas intended her to be. They were both going through divorce so they made Willie as unlikable as possible. But she did marry Spielberg... so there's that...
@josephsarto689 Жыл бұрын
The third film is the worst of the original trilogy. It’s just a carbon copy of raiders. I don’t even think anyone wrote a script, they just took the raiders script and changed a few words. Spielberg playing it safe, not taking Indy in any new adventure with any new bad guys. And the entire journey of last crusade was pointless because you couldn’t take the grail beyond the deal anyway.
@davidanderson16392 жыл бұрын
Although the second film in the series, Temple of Doom actually takes place before Raiders. Temple of Doom - 1935 Raiders of the Lost Ark - 1936 The Last Crusade - 1938 Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - 1957 Indy 5 (title TBC) - Late 1960s. I know this due to them recreating the NYC welcome home parade for the Apollo 11 crew in Glasgow. Also, one of the filming locations here in the UK, isn’t far from where I live & I got to see some of the filming taking place. Interestingly, Harrison Ford has reference dots on his face, which leads me to believe that they’ll be digitally de-aging him, so that he’ll be visually closer to the character in the 1960s. Fun Facts: Pankot Palace was achieved through a mixture of matte paintings & also a set built at Pinewood Studios. During the fight in the room, Harrison Ford ruptured a disc & despite being an horrific pain, he managed to keep shooting. Pat Roach (the Nazi minced by the plane in Raiders) reappears as the Thugee guard who gets crushed. Also, Dan Ackroyd has a cameo…..he greets Indy at the airport!!

Me and this movie have something very big in common: filming wrapped in September of 83, I was born in September of 83, so we were both in production at the same time ;) Harrison threw his back out during the scene when the Thuggee attacks him in his room, his was out of commission, recovering for a good 2 months (?) ish. His return to filming was ironically Indy's intro in the movie when he sits down at the table with Lao Che and his men - for me, this kinda explains his demeanor in this scene. Herbert Johnson Hatters and Wested Lether, the London-based manufacturers of Indy's gear, still make his gear to this day and sell to the public, and each movie has their own jacket ;) Also, like all 3 Indy's, this was shot on the same stages as the OG Star Wars trilogy in London, so I'm always expecting Darth Vader to pop up somewhere :)

I say this in light of the fact that so many outright dismiss it and pretend it's the worst movie ever made.) Harrison Ford has never been more charismatic. Indy's relationship with Short Round was cute and kind of heartwarming. There are scenes in Doom that are among the most creative and iconic in all the franchise. And even though the movie's balls-out, cartoony approach rubbed people the wrong way, you kind of have to admire the audacity of 1980's Spielberg.

The first time I watched this was on holiday, it was one of those movies you rent from reception to watch in your hotel room.

"Willy" was so universally disliked...it is the main complaint about this movie. Ironically, the actress (Kate Capshaw) was playing it exactly as Spielberg wanted....and even more ironically, she & Spielberg married and are still married almost 40 years later. It always makes me watch this film thru slightly different eyes. 🙂

The actress who played Willie is actually named Kate Capshaw, but you might be happy to know that she several years (1991) after the movie she becomes Mrs Steven Spielberg and has been ever since

I saw this at the drive-in and that was the way to see it. Your face when she first kissed Jones was priceless. Last Crusade makes up for everything

A couple of Fun Facts for you Jen: 1):Kate Capshaw (Willie) would end up marrying Steven Spielberg after filming this movies 2): Pat Roach who played the Nazi mechanic that Indy fought in the airfield scene in the first movie played the Thugee Cult Member that Indy fights in the scene right before he, Willie and Short Round liberate the kids from the mines

Most excellent review Jen. Was disappointed that Shorty just gets this one episode. Would have loved to have him back in the Crystal Skull as an associate professor working for Indy but WTF. Poof gone. I have seen comments from people who say they like Willie. But Mr Spielberg married her. You didn't say anything about Dan Akroyd being in this. "Dr Detroit", "My Stepmother is an Alien", "Spies like us", "Trading Places", "Great Outdoors ". Just a few. You will like the last crusade more than this but...Anyway, good job and on to the next round.

There’s a theory circulating the Internet that Indiana Jones is nothing more than a fever dream of Han Solo when he was frozen in carbonite in The Empire Strikes Back 😳

Hi Jen. Great reaction as ever!! Not sure on the timing, but Spielberg and Capshaw were married IRL. Whether he cast he for her acting 'attributes' is open to interpretation, but it does seem that the old adage 'It's not what you know....' is true here! See ya Canuck from your English cousin. :- )

Kate Capshaw is Mrs. Steven Spielberg. Karen Allen was busy with Starman in 1983-1984.

If no one has mentioned it the big guard that gets crushed is the same actor as the big soldier that gets chopped by the propeller in Raiders!

Fun fact, the big cult member that was whipping the children then went through the rock crusher is the same guy as the big German that Indy fought in Raiders that got mangled by the propeller.

Yep Willie is pretty much universally despised & Marion is beloved (I don't hate her - it's the character what can you do - Spielberg attempted to make the dynamic screwball comedy and kinda muffed it up (then again he fell in love w/Kate Capshaw and they've been happily ever after married since). This film and GREMLINS was the reason the MPAA created the PG-13 rating for its intense violence assumed unable to be handled by kids under the age they decided upon. You're in for a treat w/CRUSADE :D Great job Jen :D Agreed it's a lot of fun.

In the scene where Indy drinks the Blood of Kali, Mola Ram says "Maaro maaro sooar ko, chamdi nocho pee lo khoon!" This means "Kill, kill the pig! Flay his skin, drink his blood!" in Hindi

Did you know that Willie (Kate Capshaw) is Steven Spielberg’s wife? In fact I think they met and got together after this film 🥰

I've always appreciated how this sequel (well, prequel technically) doesn't try to replicate the formula set out in the original film and actually tries to be quite different, with its subterranean horror and dark voodoo vibe this time around, and providing a completely different set of sidekicks with Indy, Short-Round and Willie feeling a like a surrogate family thrown together on the wildest vacation ever. While the more light-hearted third film feels much closer in spirit to Raiders than this does, interestingly a lot of the screenplay for Temple came from discarded ideas and sequences from earlier treatments for the Raiders script. Temple of Doom also features a number of similarities with the 1930s Cary Grant adventure film, Gunga Din, and some have even suggested Temple is intended as a continuation of the story from that earlier-set film, in that it is the same Thuggee cult come back after the British (in Gunga Din) "did away with them" and the rickety old bridges that feature in both films are one and the same.

Last crusade isn’t closer in spirit to raiders, it is raiders. Scared have a new story with new villains like temple. They played it safe. They just replaced the ark with the grail, belloq with Donovan, Dietrich with Vogel, t fight in the Nepal bar with the fight in Venice

Jen, you're being too hard on Willie. She was happy in Shanghai, then Indy shows up and suddenly she's on the run, being shot at, and jumping out of airplanes in a raft. She didn't ask for any of it. There's no way she's worse than the guy ripping people's hearts out. I can't wait till your reaction to the 3rd one. Keep up the good work.
