Hey guys! What's up, it's me, Katherine and TODAY I'm turning into everyone's favorite pie maker (well, non-murderous piemaker). Today's tutorial is on Jenna Hunterson from WAITRESS: A NEW MUSICAL! I have so much love in my heart for this fantastic musical and I apparently have a lot of thoughts on it too!

1) you're stunning oml and 2) I LOVE the analysis and I LOVE this musical. It Only Takes a Taste is so sweet because you can see Jenna realize that someone appreciates her and all that she does, and I think that's where she begins to lean towards Dr. Pomatter. She never understood she was worthy of love and it's amazing to see their relationship start to grow. This musical had some of the best character development I've ever seen

"speaking of bootycall, lets talk about Dr Pomatter* made me scream at 3.00 in the morning. thanks Katherine. But anyway, i love Waitress so so much. I love how it gives the feel that can only be made by Sara Bareilles, while taking on some pretty heavy content. The mix between comedy and seriousness is done perfectly, and the flawed characters make it relatable to so many people in so many different ways. I've been obsessed with it for years, and each time I listen, I pick up something new that gives all new meaning to what I thought was happening. Sorry for the pretty long lovefest about it. Oh by the way, I would love you to do a Roxie from Chicago or Eponine from Les Mis tutorial :)

Waitress is my favorite musical ever and you're my favorite youtube so I freaked out when I saw this Honestly jenna embodies strength and selflessness more than any character in Broadway and she's one of the most interesting and complex characters as well and I feel like a lot of that comes out in "what baking can do" "you matter to me" and "she used to be mine" and I love her to death Also side note- "TAKE IT FROM AN OLD MAN" IS SO CUTE AND UNDERRATED LIKE CAN WE APPRECIATE IT

I love Waitress!! With the all female production team, and the three strong leading lady roles, there's so much female empowerment in this show!! When I was learning how to belt I used some of the songs since it has such great belting repertoire. Also, holy heck this show made me love Christopher Fitzgerald 😍

Hey Kathrine! I've been taking a lot of singing lessons lately and they are really helping, but whenever I sing I always feel like I sound like a walrus. My family, friends, and voice teacher are telling me that I have a good voice, but I just can't seem to see it (Or hear it I guess ) I'm not sure if it's a confidence thing or if I really do sound bad. Anyways, enough depressing stuff! Amazing video! Waitress is such an amazing musical!

Also, an important thing to mention with their relationship: Jenna just wants someone to care about her with no ulterior motives. Think about the letter to her baby in “You Matter To Me”: “Dear baby I hope someday, somebody wants to hold you for twenty minutes straight They don't pull away, they don't look at your face And they don't try to kiss you All they do is wrap you up in their arms and hold on tight without an ounce of selfishness in it I hope you become addicted, baby I hope you become addicted to sayin' things And having them matter to someone”

If you like indie movies, watch Dogfight. There’s a Pasek and Paul musical of the same name based on if with Lindsay Mendez and Derek Klena as the leading roles. Both the movie and the musical are phenomenal. I think it’s Pasek and Paul’s best show.

Waitress is my favorite musical!! Ever since I listened to it I've connected to Jenna with her "I don't like this and I'm hurt but I don't want to hurt others" mind set and am very emotionally attached to her character. I don't have any friends that have listened to Waitress yet so it was amazing to hear someone else's thoughts on the characters and show!! TBH, I'm not a huge makeup person, but I adored this deep dive analysis of Waitress! I am totally on the same boat when it comes to the cheating thing, but agree that it was hard with Jenna & Dr Pomatter. He's such a nice and genuine guy, and you empathize with Jenna's situation, it's easy to think "Whoa she totally deserves to be this happy." But I think she makes the best decision in the end. Loved this one! (And maybe I'll try this makeup look - or a simpler version at least!)

I love when you do analysis of musicals. I think you are right about Jenna not really having anyone to care for her and that she is really empathetic. I think that these two things contribute to her overall frustration with her life because throughout the entire musical she is constantly doing things for other people without getting much in return.

ik this is late and it came out a while ago, but pomatters song, without a believer, from what’s not inside gives insight to why he is okay with having an affair. my interpretation is that after moving as a young kid, he found solace in the waitress at the diner near him who he developed a bit of a crush on and hung around after school, where he had no friends. that woman was a support system in the sense that he had dreams that she encouraged. she also told him indirectly that if he doesn’t have people in his life that support his dreams, the dreams mean nothing. jenna dreaming of her own ideal life serves as support and validation that he’s allowed to have dreams. and it’s implied that he’s not happy in his marriage bc he wife is more logical and less of a dreamer so she doesn’t understand him. he feels like he can’t talk to her about his aspirations bc she would shut them down and brush it off as a silly aspiration. so jenna reminds him of that waitress from his childhood and the affair is a manifestation of his wants and dream of a happy life w someone who is supportive of his aspirations.

Hi! Been watching your videos a little while but just felt the urge to comment on this one because I love Waitress so much and I really enjoyed hearing all your analysis in this video - the time absolutely flew by, it is not annoying at all :) There's not enough analysis out there of Broadway shows in my opinion! Was really glad you mentioned that shift in "It Only Takes A Taste" as I remember sitting in my seat like being FLOORED at that moment when I saw it live because of their chemistry and just feeling of "oh wow!! how well written is that, how you can feel their relationship shift into this unknown" - so I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves that moment in particular! One thing I'd be interested in knowing your further thoughts on are the side characters/subplots in Waitress, or more specifically what you think about Ogie, as that character is the one thing I struggle with about the show - I know we're supposed to be happy with him and Dawn getting together but that first scene where he appears involves too much of him ignoring her saying no to him for me to really get on board with that relationship. I don't know how it is in the movie as I haven't seen it (though your description of it inspires me to try and check it out as I also love indie films) but yeah, I just wish I could reconcile that to myself like I am able to with Dr Pomatter's cheating. Sorry that this got super long too, guess there are a lot of words to be said about Waitress! And btw that makeup look is gorgeous!

I bake pretty obsessively, and honestly What Baking Can Do flipped such a switch for me, I began feeling for Jenna even more and it kinda put me in her shoes, its one of those songs that just smacked me in the face

what you said about What Baking Can Do, its also a metaphor for her as a person especially related to She Used To Be Mine. she herself feels as if she is ugly as a person, so she hides her feelings and pain and presents herself as a happy person. she is imperfect but tries, she is good but lies, shes broken and messy and kind and lonely, but is baked up to look presentable like a pie. i think its interesting how pomatter is one person who is so so interested and loves her pies, but is also interested in her as a person, he is interested in her imperfections her quirks, when almost no one else is. i guess you could say that the You Matter To Me scene when she shows him what goes into baking a pie, is a corrolation to this, he cares to know how to make a pie and he cares about what on the inside of the metaphorical pie that Jenna is. idk just food for thought.

I don't think you will remember but I auditioned for you can't take it with you. I didn't get a call back for it so I will most likely not be in, the director said if you don't get a call back you will most likely not get in. But there is still the musical once upon a mattress. So hopefully it will go better there. I will update anybody who reads this next week when we officially know who is in.
