How to make a really good copper cleaner and tarnish remover with common household ingredients. It will clean off really well, and you probably already have everything you need in the kitchen!

Just tried it on an old copper CPU cooler. Brightened right up before my eyes. I’ll also give it a baking soda bath.

Protip: Bathe in baking soda / warm water afterwards to PH neutralize the metal and slow down the oxidization process.

Thanks, I have done this with a little twist. I had no vinegar BUT I had Ketchup which just so happens to have distilled vinegar and mixing with flour and salt...WOW! I can say in the very affirmative that it started to work before my very eyes!

Try ketchup, you do not even have to scrub, just slather and leave on for 30 minutes or more and rinse. It even works for water stains on stainless steel.

I used to have an old tub of paste made by Amway which was an almost instant result but that ran out long ago. Resorted to using the stinky Brasso infused woollen wad stuff that eats through rubber gloves but now I think I'll try this.

Is the flour just the vehicle for holding the vinegar /salt acid onto the copper rather than having it just run off?

This worked perfectly. Though, I think it probably doesn't need to sit on there for very long. I did one pan approx. 10 minutes and the second for 20 minutes and there really wasn't anything different between the two. Thanks anyway for this =D!

Glad it worked for you! Maybe the required time depends on the amount of tarnish.

@jenniesgarage10 жыл бұрын
Hi, it would be cool if it works, but for steel you might need something a little harsher. I've used muriatic acid on a dirt bike pipe before (not a chrome one). It worked good at cleaning it up, but watch out for the fumes and burns!

OH yea it works...instantly. BUt it makes me wonder how and why it works so well. I know the flour helps the concoction stay pasty. The vinegar acts as a solvent, but why salt?
@Blvkcoyote9 жыл бұрын
The salt acts as an abrasive.

Believe it or not, urine is a good metal cleaner. It does jewelry really well. I tried it on a copper liberty bell I found at a thrift store and it did a bunch, but not all. Even after days of soaking. So I came here and just tried only vinegar. That immediately started getting crusty black off. I might need to make the paste to clean into the designs that are on it and the crack. I will let it soak for another hour to see.

Well done, sir! Any difference in ingredients for polishing softer metals like aluminum?
@jenniesgarage10 жыл бұрын
ForbinColossus Glad you liked the video. I haven't tried it on aluminum, but it would probably have to be more of an abrasive polish than a chemical one (like the copper mixture)

I might try your version on a really badly treated and discolored pan with lots of old oxidation......but for me: taking care of them as they are used and put away does the trick >>>>> Rub a little ketchup on the copper part of the pan....shake a little salt onto it....swirl it around over the copper (and over the stainless is good too) and let it sit while you do the rest of your dishes. Wash off with soapy water and rinse...copper is great looking again. Also helps a lot if you treat your pans with respect and take care of them. Everybody knows you can't kill those old vintage "Made In USA" Revere-ware pans!!! I've got a whole set of them from the seventies and eighties still hanging on a pot rack in my kitchen...they get used every day....all that copper and stainless steel is sparkling...still pretty as new!! (wouldn't give a plug nickel for the knock-off psuedo-revere-ware junk pans they are making in China today, though) ~~RED ☮♥♫

blondwiththewind Great idea about the ketchup. Good philosophy too, better to maintain looking good now than to wait until it looks horrible. I try to apply the same logic to fitness haha. and you're right about the quality of the new vs. old pans. Sadly, it's not just the pans these days that's cheap chinese junk

Heinz tomato ketchup works just as well and just needs a quick squirt from the bottle. No mixing.
@blondwiththewind9 жыл бұрын
Natterjak2012 Rub some ketchup over the bottom of the pan....sprinkle some salt on it....rub it in and let it sit while you do the rest of your dishes....wash n' rinse. Works almost as good as the Cameo powder...no chemicals...no erosion of the copper.

+blondwiththewind If you just want to clean 1 or 2 items, the fastest way is to use superfine steel wool. OOOO grade. It doesn't scratch, and it not only cleans, it polishes as well
@blondwiththewind8 жыл бұрын
***** No way am I ever going to use steel wool on copper. You're not "polishing" the copper: you are wearing it away.

Copper's thermal conductivity (the reason pots and pans have the stuff there to begin with) is unaffected by oxidation/tarnish. Clean it if you want, but it's purely aesthetic. You're not improving its performance in any way. Cleaning copper electrical contacts is a better reason to do this.
@blondwiththewind9 жыл бұрын
dinuguan510 "Aesthetic" is GOOD.....especially if you are eating from food prepared in those pans, and hanging them on a pot rack in your kitchen every day since the seventies (like I have :-)
@Royanexus68 жыл бұрын
You only need washing soda and boiling water

I was so looking forward to the end of the 30 minutes....but i'm disappointed in the results on the former dirty spots...mottled and matte finish. Now what? The top edges where the "dust etc" collected was real grungy and not shiny like the rest....now its mottled and dull...again not shiny like the rest of the piece. Sigh!
