When Jennifer opened up about not always feeling articulate because of her lack of education, I love that she countered Viola's reassurance with "And you are very beautiful" because whilst Viola was talking, I felt saddened that she, an absolute legend, feels she does not belong in the business because she doesn't fit the shallow box. Viola is such an inspiration to me. I'm thoroughly enjoying this conversation. They are both extremely talented women!!

I feel so emotional watching this. Viola said “What am I supposed to do with me? What am I supposed to do with my blackness, my deep voice, my wide nose? I have to believe that me, myself is a canvas in which I have to start my work…” That speaks to me so strongly. We have to see ourselves, in all of our uniqueness, as the canvas in which we have to work, and not force ourselves to conform to society’s idea of the what neutrality or standardization looks like. Art can be created from any starting point.

I was looking for this in the comments section because I didn't realize how technical Juliard could get. Juliard is basically America's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. But she's right, when you're soooo focused on the technical aspects and forget the person who's going to act those scenes, audiences will see right through it. It was so fun to see a "classically trained" actress actually giving us the tea of that school. What a refreshing take, instead of the usual "yes i went to a prestigious drama school" answer.

Wasn't planning on watching the whole thing in one sitting... but I couldn't stop. The time just flew by. Viola Davis is... everything. Her words, her strength, hear realness, wisdom, and firmness. Jennifer Lawrence was lovely, and it was refreshing to see her just taking Viola Davis in and, as a viewer, experience her as more than who she has presented herself in the past years in interviews (funny, goofy, relatable, light-hearted). She is growing and deepening herself as she has grown, as well as through her marriage and being a new mother... and it's beautiful to witness.

I think it’s so thought provoking that Viola is someone who hasn’t been deemed the ideal “beauty” from a societal perspective, & Jennifer has. Yet they have experienced similar traumas. It goes to show that superficial acceptance has no weight & can be detrimental whether you are on the “positive” or negative end of the spectrum. They both have so much depth. This was amazing.

What Viola Davis said about the 'prostitute' concept is so incredibly true. That's why I hope she gets the strength to write and direct her own movies. The upsetting thing about the capitalization on beauty & 'the look' in Hollywood is how that can take the soul away from artistry in many ways. It has held women back a lot in terms of allowing three dimensions to be shown, and allowing the good bad and the ugly to be expressed. Movies can change people's mindsets and I can't wait to see more roles where women are able to express everything that they are, even when they aren't physically appealing in a role. It doesn't have to be as drastic as 'Monster'. It just has to show the truth which is so rarely expressed in full - but Viola very well must be aware of the impact she's made on that very thing. The way she cried in Fences proves that. That scene was a revolutionary moment for women actors. Jennifer Aniston actually did that in 'Cake' and it changed how I saw her as an actress but in interviews people just questioned why she didn't look perfect in the role. We need to celebrate when female actors choose to take on roles that express their full humanity more. It will change a lot for us.

I don't care how people misinterpret anything Jennifer Lawerence says in an interview. She is a phenomenal actress. The variation in her characters and the stories she tells is a deep and wide chasm. Viola Davis is such a calming force and is so talented, articulate. The characters she portrays are grounded. There is always just a deeper story than the one you think you are watching. The skill that it takes to empathize with a character or a story. The depth of understanding, the psychology behind the thought process, as a person standing outside looking in you can't grasp it. But they do...they take months, sometimes years to understand a character and to tell their story and give it justice. But we just look at the finished product and judge. As an audience member, I appreciate what they do and what they give...

@TheJTcreate
@TheJTcreate Ай бұрын
What mis-interpretation? Jen speaks pretty clearly. I think you know Jen said some things that were factually wrong and you are trying to make excuses for it. I actually saw Aliens in the theatre in 1986 and experience male audiences cheering when Ripley torched the queen nest. Men were going back to see that movie again and again. It was a hit on VHS home market too. I can give you a whole list of female lead movies that were successful. So male accepted female action stars existed long, long, long before Hunger Games. Hunger Games didn't really change anything on that. Women action stars still face limitations when it comes to male audiences acceptance and Box office draw. It requires a smart written script and smart written characters to overcome that. Something that is even more lacking now. These celebrities are people like you and me. They are not Gods. They are not Kings and Queens. They are not royalty. They are humans capable of making mistakes. They are capable of being ignorant, dysfunctional, and yes even absolutely stupid (no I am not implying all this to Jen. I don't know her). They are also capable of embellishing their career influences on culture for marketing purposes too. So don't dig for excuses.
@mattb7479
@mattb7479 8 күн бұрын
@@TheJTcreate Do you not see this issue that you had to go back to 1986 for your example of a female action lead in 2024??? Like... c'mon man... lmao. You clearly get the point she's making. Studios often don't take chances on female led action movie franchises. And while they're more plentiful now, they definitely weren't 4-5 years before Hunger Games was released.

Not only did I learn a lot here, I also feel very much not alone. Thank you so much to both of these great women and everyone involved!

This selection of unique individuals couldn’t have resulted in a more inspired, insightful or thoughtful conversation. And the results are equally as unique and enticing for their soul stirring nature at the many levels of life experience. Unexpected, welcome and fulfilling beyond my wildest dreams. Thank you Viola. Thank you Jennifer. You are where you both belong during this conversation. And society has received your most precious gifts. I will pray that there is attention and discussion to equally approach the passion which you both have continued to offer in your life perspective. Thank you. JimR

A beautiful, honest conversation! I love it! I love how open and vulnerable they are; the way they approch their roles and the understanding they have of their characters. The courage of people who the world sees as successfull badass actresses to say "I am terrified of every role I take on"; to show you that they have impostor syndrome too! That they have anxiety too! I love it! P.s.: I love Viola's laughter!

The limiting beliefs they hold about themselves they each open up about are so insane, you'd wish they'd know how far they truly stand from those insecurities and the same time, their bravery in sharing those is heartwarming in its intent to stand with us all in our shared humanity. They're incredible!

The best and most interesting part of this interview is when Viola and Jennifer both shared insecurities (beauty and intellect) with one another and comforted one another. These two seemingly opposite actresses were able to connect with each other in that moment. I'm sad to see this comment section has dissolved into a bandwagon of people mocking Jennifer for saying something that i doubt she meant to come across in the way that it did.

Exactly. This was such an insightful interview, but people only want to focus on an obviously hyperbolic statement of Jlaw. It is also exactly what she mentions at the beginning of the interview, how nothing can be said without the audience taking things out of context.
@cheetahinireland18
@cheetahinireland18 2 жыл бұрын
@@IKnowButILoveYou You’re incorrect. Taken IN context, Jennifer Lawrence said she was the “first” when she factually and clearly and evidentially is not even close to the “first” female action star. Nobody is taking anything out of context except those that are defending such a ridiculously untrue statement. And JLaw is taking heat for saying something false, just like anyone else. She doesn’t get special privileges because she’s famous.
@nugagim
@nugagim 2 жыл бұрын
@@cheetahinireland18 Oh pish posh. She clearly misspoke while talking about how people used to talk about female action stars and those stereotypes, and thinking back to how they were still saying those things when she did Hunger Games. Heck, people still said that stuff about why Black Widow wasn't getting her own film for years. She obviously, and I mean eye-bleedingly blindingly overwhelmingly cream-pie-to-the-face obviously, knows there's other female led action films. Pretending otherwise is just derpy disingenuity. Then as icing on that cake, she then goes on to talk about her anxieties relating to not articulating herself well in interviews, and fears about saying things that'll make her sound stupid because of insecurities about her intellect. So if we're going to talk about context, that makes the pile-on of smug “hon hon hon”, from people who've never misspoken once in their entire lives quite shitty. Just comes across as insecure desperation. So well done, you caught her out. Just as well she didn't respond "You too" to a waiter saying "Enjoy your food" or you'd have roasted her alive.

Having watched the whole interview I find it really odd that the comment section is so focused on one section of the interview where Jennifer made a wrong statement when the full conversation is so enriching and full of life. These two women were vulnerable, kind, showed a deep interest in one another, listened to one another and even shared such profound truths. It’s a great conversation, we’re too obsessed with catching people out and ‘gotcha’ moments that we lose out on the really good stuff.

I’m so glad you pointed this out. Viola articulated so many profound truths about being a working artist, like when she asked Jennifer about how she makes people feel “less alone” with her performances, but here we are; focusing on an out of touch statement that was probably just an understandable miscommunication.
