NOT JUST HIGH SCHOOL EVIL. Jennifer Check, the central character in the unapologetically emo 2009 film Jennifer's Body, represents a chilling blend of high school drama and demonic horror. This comprehensive analysis delves into the transformation of a typical teenage girl into a predatory succubus, exploring the intricate themes of friendship, seduction, and the dark undercurrents of adolescence. I'll trace Jennifer's journey from ordinary flag twirler to a monstrous entity, examine how her character uniquely combines horror and satire, and explore how her transformation serves as a metaphor for the darker aspects of societal expectations and the tumultuous nature of high school life.
Jennifer Check stands as a modern horror icon, a testament to screenwriter Diablo Cody's ability to weave a story that warns of the dangers hidden beneath seemingly innocent facades. This analysis will not only explore the horror lore but also delve into the psychological aspects of Jennifer's character, revealing her motivations and the film's deeper commentary on insecurity, abuse of power, sexual behavior, growing up, and hopelessness.
For this video, I'll be analyzing the 2009 film, as well as the comic from the same year, Jennifer's Body, which offers more detail on this cult-classic character.

It's funny how they want to sacrifice a virgin and randomly choose Jennifer, while completely ignoring Needy, who is a stereotypical virgin.

I think how awkward Jennifer was trying to flirt with him, made him think she was a virgin. Because I think later on there's a scene where he's arguing with his bandmate over whether or not she's actually a virgin. I think the reason he gives has nothing to do with her awkwardness but the bandmates do contest her innocence.

I think it may be because he's projecting. They are trying to be this hot popular band but the reality is they aren't confident that they are really going to make it and that's why they "cheat" and use supernatural means to gain fame. So when he sees Jennifer, who is obviously trying too hard, he assumes it's all a façade. That's my take at least.

There is another interpretation on why Jennifer kills boys that are close to Needy. Jennifer has romantic feelings for needy but suppresses them and once possessed the demon unleash those desires with inhibition so she kills off all potential love interests. It also explains why Jennifer gives up and the end of the fight

This kind of hurts. I was raped two times before 8, and abused from 8 till 16, a lot of bullshit later I was drugged and raped again at 28. Anyway I became a toxic person, angry to everyone, and only now at 34 I’m out of the tunnel and trying to find a healthier version of myself. Whenever I saw “Jennifer’s body” I always felt a huge sadness about her, she was never the bad guy to me. This analysis just opened my eyes as to why. I’m better now, I’m fighting my demons, so I guess the point of this comment is: you don’t know what people go through, have some mercy on your heart for everyone, we all have our demons.

I'm 57, I was abducted by a convicted pedophile around age 9... I honestly can't remember. I tried blocking that out. Parents threw that bone in the closet, and I never received help with what happened. It was way different back in the 70's. It messed me up. I'm saddened to hear what happened to you. Life is good, but people are cruel & and evil, and as a child, you have nothing but trust in people...adults & when trust is broken, kiss normalcy goodbye. Your life has been altered FOREVER and never in a good way. Stay strong, and remember your worth. You are a survivor and deserve a happy life.

I always saw the hypnotism at the beginning (and Jennifer taking the singer's drink) as a metaphor for a date rape drug or something similar, especially with the way she had to be led by the hand and was stumbling while she walked, along with the general unawareness of her surroundings (idk if it's ever been confirmed though)
@camchem
@camchem 4 ай бұрын
I actually watched the movie last night, and I would have to agree with you. While it’s not exactly realistic with how quickly it happens, it doesn’t really matter, because she’s seen stumbling and she starts slurring her words a LOT more as soon as she takes a sip from his drink. I think it’s pretty safe to say that she was drugged.
@michikip45

I watched it recently again too and yeah I think that part is definitely to represent date rape drugs. I’ve never been thankfully, but I’ve had to help others who were at parties (I’m, def the Needy friend lol) and Jennifer’s manner is really damn close to how ya get. You’re basically sleep walking but aware of it, it’s scary!! I know in the movie it has the supernatural element of the hypnotism from the singer but honestly? Like I said they still really nailed how those drugs make someone seem, makes me wanna save Jennifer each time the poor thing 😭

It would make sense why she also kinda had this love hate relationship with her friend, even though Amanda’s character was supposed to be there for her and represent her innocence she was trying to get rid of but couldn’t let go- she also watched her as she stumbled into the car and probably in Jennifer’s mind, let that horrible thing happen to her because she was so out of it too. She tried to get her not to go but kind of half heartedly because she knew Jennifer did what she wanted, but she also ignored all the signs that something was very very wrong. It kind of makes sense why she started targeting guys that Amanda Seyfried’s character like it was attached to, because she couldn’t hurt her directly from her messed up sense of loyalty and codepence, so she simultaneously drove all the men that could take her away out of her life but also hurt her deeply

The only thing I think you can add to this, is that Jennifer creates a circle of abuse, where victims of abuse end up abusing others. She went from being abused by the band,, both literally and figuratively, to being the abuser, again both literally and figuratively. That being said it's something mentioned before in other horror histories and is just kinda implied, so I'm not criticizing CZsWorld for not mentioning it, just bringing it up cause it often is brought up in regards to physical or emotional abuse but can be found in cases of sexual abuse as well, although it is rare when compared to how common these traits are found in victims physical or emotional abuse.

I figured needy is the avenging angel to Jennifer's demonic self. She goes after the band for what they did to her friend and the people she killed because of them. But then you wonder what is she going to do next ? Because unlike Jennifer. Needy has full control and knows what she's doing. Would really enjoy seeing a 2nd movie with what needy ended up doing.

It sounds interesting. Like we know what happened to the band but what we see what happens. Like a typical horror film but through their eyes and Needy is the monster this time. Or if Needy decides to be an avenger tracking down those who have made a similar deal like the band.
@crimsonffire
@crimsonffire 4 ай бұрын
@brennabrodbeck5183 that's where my mind went. What if she went after others who used innocent people to make a deal ? Because she has some of Jennifer's powers but we don't know how many and she has lost her best friend her boyfriend and goes after the band but then what? Her hunting down other demonic souls like Jennifer? Or going after the people making the deals? Would be really interesting to see.

@lexuscoleman4488 I know thank you. Speaking of which, I'd love to see you discuss Ginger Snaps, and how it and Jennifer's Body allude to adolescence and sexuality. Rather than have the title character become a succubus, she gets lycanthropy with menstruation, mood swings, and sexual interest being parallels to the side effects of infection from a werewolf, and womanhood represented through the next full moon during Halloween night. Sisterly relationships play part to the wolf-pack allusions. Can't wait!
@hisshoota
@hisshoota 4 ай бұрын
The movies are similar because they both can basically be summarized as "Hell is a teenage girl"; they use becoming a monster (a succubus and a lycan) as a metaphor for growing up and experiencing puberty, menstruation, and the emotional and physical effects of being a woman and wanting to be more mature/grow up faster because they don't want to be seen as "a little girl".

I love your take on my absolute favorite movie. One thing though, I am a bisexual woman and I interpreted her going after all the men that needy liked as more of a way to make her jealous and take away any options for her. She wants needy but is confused by her own feelings for her. That is why she's so mean to her because it's her frustration with not being able to be with her friend. I feel like this is a universal bi woman's experience lol. No wonder I love this movie so much

To me it’s internet how female puberty is equated to horror. Jennifer’s body and teeth are some of my favorite coming of age stories because they seem to capture the absolute terror of being a teenage girl. People everywhere have an idea of who you are and what you can do. The second you oppose them even slightly, you’re punished disproportionately. In the end though, you were a victim at the start and everything after that is just trying to heal some of the wounds.
@elizabeth.601

This happened to my sister and I, everything except the killings. I can’t believe how relatable this story is. My sister was abused growing up and now behaves similarly to the brunette girl. The scene where the mom walks in and sees her baby gone reminds me that she was a victim and kinda made me cry because I am so angry at my sister but she is a victim and I am heartbroken. Like my twin can’t form lasting relationships and goes through men and hit on my husband and is very out of control, but all I can think is that she didn’t ask for this and that her life was derailed by past abuse.

I watched this movie in 8th grade and thought it was badass. Realized I was bi, kissed my best friend and went on with life loving this movie. It wasn’t until I became an adult did I realize I missed a lot of the themes and lessons this movie offers. I thought it was just about sexuality. But then again I was a lot like Jennifer in the way I presented myself in high school while being terribly insecure. It’s very ironic that my dumb teenage brain took away the wrong message and made so many mistakes and now I have an even deeper connection to this movie because of them.

CZ you did a great job on this one there are so many layers to this and younger teens to women we could relate as we were going through these things. From a horror standpoint I enjoy a horror with people who create a villain because many are created but we ignore that. Many want to pretend evil is just born out of nowhere but these types of horrors are interesting to me even if I'm rooting against the villain.

I have IRL seen it happen that someone went through trauma and never matured past that age. It's kind of bizarre, but the person had been abused by their parents and had traits associated with children and teenagers while being 20+.

as far as anyone I have talked to from our friend group knew they were never actually diagnosed with anything and they were put on an anti depressant once. When trying to deal with well depression due to their life not going the way they wanted @@The_void111 how they were acting was pure trauma reaction and the reasons they were acting the way they were could be linked to very specific things in their life.

I've always had a fascination with the making of horror rather than watching the movies themselves. I'm trying to make the effort to watch more actual movies. I have heard of this movie but haven't seen it and have barely seen anything about it. These real-world elements of psychology really add depth to movies. I love the hidden details like the names of the arcade games. Everything in a movie is placed there or chosen in some way but some writers and directors can put some deep messages into the smallest of things. So rewarding for the eagle-eyed or persistent viewers.

Wow. This was truly a wonderful, meaningful, and comprehensive breakdown of Jennifer’s story! I first watched this movie when I was only 10 years old, and I’ve always known that it was definitely one of those movies that had a significant impact on my life since it basically catalyzed my transition into adolescence and, subsequently, adulthood, as well as introduced me to emo music (which is always special and nostalgic to me). After watching this video, though, I’ve found more appreciation for the movie as I now realize just how relevant/relatable it was to my own life experiences, especially as a girl. Thanks to Diablo Cody for sharing her own story as well - compelling and relatable. :)

Same! I thought it was going to be lame from the way it was advertised and originally didn't have interest. I saw it somehow and it quickly became one of my favorite movies then and still now. I definitely watched Easy A like 4 times in Theatres with my best friend at the time whose parents would always pay for us both 😊. That and Scott Pilgrim VS The World, which is now one of my favorite time capsules for 2009-2012 young adult culture. Jennifer's Body is definitely part of the time capsule of how criminally underrated Megan Fox has been as an actor through her career from the perpetual idea that since she's so hot she can't have any talent or insight in these roles. ItGlad she's finally getting that recognition.

I never actually sat down and watched this movie, but I’ve heard of it many times and I also know the plot but after watching this video, I just realize how much I resonate with Jennifer when I was younger around her age I was dumb, wanting to grow up fast, because I had a hard life so I was promiscuous, but the wrong man took advantage of me and turned me into a monster, and it changed my life forever, maybe that’s the true meaning of this movie with a little bit of a figurative paranormal theme, I like the idea of her becoming a succubus because it’s funny I actually kinda am the real life counterpart. when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade.😈😌

Obviously the worst of Jennifer’s traits were hyper activated by becoming a succubus, but personally I think she wouldn’t have done all of the things she had to Needy had she never been sacrificed. I feel like they would have eventually grown apart in high school and their sand box love would naturally die. The jealousy & insecurity of Jennifer I think would remain concealed rather than enhanced and all would be at peace lol

Thank u for being such a sweet and delicate Professor when speaking about delicate female struggles instead of just calling Jennifer an "S" or "W" but instead u went into detail with why young women without father figures in their life, are really looking for love and protection(my own dad failed me and left me with an abusive mother who basically used me as a sacrificial lamb to my child predator of an uncle, and I admit that I became a young mom at 18, just because I wanted someone who would love and need me)but I was never promiscuous and nor did I mistreat my friends out of insecurity like Jen did her bff, and it's funny to me because I do have a good friend Juanita who I nicknamed "Neaty" because she's always been a neat person? She had more mother issues, because her mom kicked her and her 2 sisters out of her house at the age of 11, due to Neaty and her sisters jumping mom's bf after he beat their mom up. Anyways, thank u again because u do take extra special care of important things, just like how I appreciate when u added the BLM movement and George Floyd being killed on ur Candyman video? One of my favorite types of human beings, are the ones who stand up and speak on the ugly truths that other ppl endure, even if they may have never personally experienced......those folks are true heroes, IMO. Also, there are a lot of cool ppl that are subbed to this channel as well. Happy Belated New Year, Professor CZ and Family!!!
