Hopefully I will be ready for this soon. Still waiting on the final offer. The sad part is that the VP is on my side even if my supervisor and manager are not. He will be the only one blindsided. The others should be overjoyed. The customers also will be a little hurt. Especially when my manager kills the work I spent my career there developing. I don't really have fantasies of telling off anyone, but as bitter as it sounds, I do wish I could pull the after hours email. I won't, and never could. But that's as close as I get to having cruel fantasies. It makes you look bad to future employers.

I am going to struggle with this one. My manager is going on vacation for 2.5 weeks. The VP that is on my side will be filling in for my manager. The new company recommends waiting to resign until the pre-employment requirements are completed. That should be while the manager is on vacation. I will do it in person. But I do feel like the timing is going to be perceived as poorer than just coincidence. The process started weeks ago. He announced his vacation on the same day I signed the new offer. The perception is going to be that I waited until he was gone. I will have to deal with that, but I am not going to wait longer just for him.

I think it's absolute b.s. that we have to provide 2 weeks notice to quit but employers don't have to give us notice to fire/lay off/terminate us on the spot
@sarahphillips295
@sarahphillips295 3 жыл бұрын
In most places you don’t have to provide any notice at all when you quit a job. Just be sure you haven’t signed an agreement to stay for any length of time. Usually because the company paid for college tuition or training and the employee agrees to work for a certain period of time after they’re out of school. Just because you don’t have to, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give notice though. You look way more professional, it looks better to a prospective employer and you could possibly get rehired if you do give notice.

Maybe you can emphasize things you liked about the job without actually praising the company? The toxic period for lasted for about a month each year when I was forced to work with another company that I didn't want to work for; I was the only one in the company forced to do it year after year and they abused me year after year and no matter how well I did at my job, no matter what extra work I took on, no matter my seniority and no matter how many times I suggested it was time for them to find someone else to do it, they refused to stop doing it to me. So the only way I could get that other company out of my life was to quit my year-round job.

I would like just for once to be able to respectfully tell them why I think they're not doing a good job and that their toxic behaviour is why Im resigning. If my boss already doesnt like me despite me being a good employee and talks behind my back to coworkers, what will stop them from giving a bad reference even if I do everything gracefully? you can be as correct as you want, but at the end they still have the power to make things up and trash-talk you anyway... infuriating

I am a month into my new job and I want to quit. I wanted to quit after the first day. A week ago, the general manager walked out and left us in a really bad spot. This is the first time I've ever experienced a manager, let alone the top manager, walk out on the job. The whole place is extremely short-staffed. The morale is non-existent. There's finger-pointing, criticism, and animosity between the employees. Everyone is exhausted and burnt out. I was not properly trained, and so sometimes I make mistakes out of ignorance, and I'm usually ridiculed for it by my coworkers. This is at a nursing home, so there is a part of me that feels this moral obligation to stay for the elderly people. I am at a loss at what to do.

How many of you have quit without another job lined up? My job is so stressful I honestly am not capable of finding another during. I also work in a job where I look like hell by the end of the day as it's very physical. Job interviews after working means I would NOT get the job. I quit without another job lined up. I lived off of my last four paychecks. It wasn’t fun and it was stressful during that time. With gods grace I got another job but it’s a temporary job and at least a few paychecks till I actually find something more stable. I would recommend having another job lined up so you won’t get put in a stressful situation. Just look around for jobs as you work. Something is always bound to pop up!

@@rruta645 I feel this advice, but my last job was so mentally and physically draining that looking while working was impossible. Every job I ever had I quit without having another one lined up. I'm about to do the same here soon! Although I am young and have no financial burdens. It's easy when you're not in debt. There's nothing that makes me smile more than walking out of a place for the last time, with a bit of $$$ saved up, and a reliable vehicle! Especially if it was a crappy job with crappy boses. I enjoy myself. Drive around. Do some sight seeing. Be with family and friends. The feeling of having some money and no time restraints whatsoever is arguably the greatest feeling on earth. How did it go for you? I assume you've already moved on, and got another job? What did you do? What do you do now? Hope you are well!! 😁

@@lukeswain1752 I was a teacher assistant for 7 years and it was hell with bad pay and getting moved job departments when ppl quit. I got a job as a receptionist while I figure out long term career goals. I can say I don’t have a clue now after Covid. There was too much pressure to have long term goals for career before 2020, and most ppl I know are just making a paycheck at this point, even with college degrees. School kind of failed most people unless they are a doctor, lawyer, in IT. But yeah I think quitting without having something lined up means I’m motivated to find the right thing. I’m one of those ppl who if I have a job I will make excuses to find a job and then never do it. Finding a job is a full time job at this point and it took me 3 months to find the right one.

I agree about telling the boss off. My satisfaction came from watching his facial expressions while reading my resignation letter. I considered it one of life’s little pleasures. Hearing my former manager and co-workers slag me after I left was disappointing. I was accountable and hard working which took a lot of the burden off of him but to hear he was let go due to performance some time later just proved why leaving was the best thing.

I understand what your saying but don't waste your time being disappointed in cowardly butt kissing co-workers. They are the same ones that after a team meeting will say " you expressed everything I was thinking" ...."I was just about to say the same thing"....."boy their lucky I didnt get started I was gonna....blah blah blah ". There were only 3 of us out of 20 that would address the lies or problems created by local management when it was needed. After years and years of the same scenario, I finally started telling the cowards to STFU when they would come to me afterwords with " I was gonna" BS.

I just became a First time Quitter during my career. I voluntary terminated myself when I went to my bosses office and explained I am terminating myself. I worked and adapted to a highly toxic co-worker environment from Day 1 but rode it out until I hit a brick wall mentally. I never experienced this in my entire life, I just could not do the work anymore that was asked of my coworkers/boss. so before anyone else realized this and ended my tenure that day. I reviewed my employment contract, stating at-will meaning either you or company can terminate contract at any time for any reason, with or without cause. I dont like being a quitter, but I did not want to leave any negative impressions in the office. A two-week notice in my situation was not an option since I was already in shut down mode already and needed to take action quickly. I called a longtime friend of mine before I quit to get his take on this and asked he me this question. Will you eat the next day after you quit? I said yes. And his answer was to drop this position like a Hot Potato!

This video is probably the most helpful one that I've seen regarding how to properly resigning in the most graceful way! I love how you said to be honest about feeling nervous/uncomfy in having the official conversation about resigning. I feel like most of the other videos give solid objective points to hit, but they seem too robotic and cold, which doesn't suit my personal industry/company environment/personality. Thank you for offering tips in how to be sincere yet still professional in this otherwise very uncomfy event!

Jennifer, outstanding content! Love your “straight talk / talk turkey” approach! I recently resigned from a executive level position with a company, and followed all of the advice you recommend here. I had hit a ceiling with current company and found an opportunity that fit me and my ambition. Focusing exit conversations with my team and other teammates on the positive aspects of my new opportunity, helps to keep the conversation on track and entirely positively focused. Great advice throughout, Jennifer. Love your channel. Drive on!

@@JenniferBrick I noticed my check was missing 40$, so I asked my Boss what happened. She said I must've forgotten to sign in, I strongly disagreed with that and asked her if she could show the month's clock in folder. Surprise surprise, when she gets the folder turns out a WHOLE day was missing from clock-in, so me and 2 others of my co-workers checks were wrong. My Boss usually takes the folder home with her to calculate the hours, she said she must've forgotten it at home or forgot to add in that day. This isn't the first time our checks have been wonky and it wasn't the last time. One time a girl I was working with told me she was missing 100$ out of her check when she calculated the hours. So glad I don't work there anymore.

With all due respect, but I don’t really care too much for 2 week notices. Especially when it’s a job that you hate with an absolute passion. If it stresses you out constantly, also plays with your mental health you need to leave ASAP. Also these so called “Managers” don’t even appreciate 2 week notices anymore. Once they find out that you are planning on leaving they start to act funny, also talk crazy about you behind your back. For example “Oh I’m glad he’s leaving, he was getting lazy anyway, we’re better off.” And this I know for sure because I witnessed this with my own eyes with an old coworker years ago.

I made the horrible mistake of burning a bridge by insulting my former company. The first week I started my new job I had an incident that really made me want to leave the new job and go back to the old one. But because I decided to be immature I they weren't going to hire me back. Luckily I stuck it out with my new/current job and I absolutely love it, however if it had not turned out good I would have been stuck working a job I hate. I also burnt the bridge of being able to use any of my former coworkers as references. DON'T burn your bridges I promise it isn't worth it.

I did actually have a disagreement with my boss once and leave and never come back because it was the last straw, but I was studying for a masters degree in the evenings and weekends so the way I got around it was to simply not put them on my CV and state that I had a career break as a masters student. The reason I did this is because I didn't feel that any reference they would give me would be good anyway because they hated me despite my hard work; it was a 'Mean Girl' culture and I thought, since I probably won't get a reference at all or a good reference, why bother to be a nice person and give them a month of notice to organize my files and retrain the new person? Kindness and professionalism should work both ways. I wouldn't try this at home though, especially if it's a first job. I'd been working for a number of years before this job so I had previous employers to give me a reference and had built up a decent reputation in my city. My advice would be, if you've stormed out of an office in a fit of temper or have left and never went back (unless it was a sick leave), to leave it off your CV, unless you're confident that someone in that company would still give you a reference or at least confirm your employment dates. It's not worth destroying your career because many new offers are subject to receipt of a satisfactory reference. You will always have the last laugh if you sit tight, wait for a better opportunity instead of leaving and having to take the next position that comes along. It's better to choose the role, not be forced to take a role as damage control. Thankfully I'm now on a higher salary in a great company with 42 days annual leave! Karma is a wonderful thing 😊

I think there are some valid points you mention. However, thanking you boss or company and saying nice things is something you should not do. Your letter should simply state that your resigning effective from start date and your last day of work. You don't need to say anything about transfer knowledge helping with transitioning etc. You then put yourself in pearl and shitz talk when you do leave, with everything blaming you for not helping with the transition. You can't win basically so don't mention this in your resignation letter. Keep it absolutely brief as possible. And if there is a meeting to discuss your resignation. Keep it brief. Dont say anything that you don't want them know. Don't say nice things for the sake of it. Keep it polite and let them do the talking. Just listen to them. After that it's up to you who you tell or not about you leaving.

I love my job but I have to leave because of a better pay, benefits, and growth opportunities. It hurts me so much to leave and the fact that they are short staffed makes me feel even more guilty. My boss is also going on a trip at the end of the month which when my 2 weeks would be done so he asked if I can give him 4 weeks instead, but that would interfere with my start date at my new job. I don’t know what to do and just hate how I’m feeling this sad when I want to be happy about this new opportunity. I also hate that my boss wanted to counter offer and say things to make me stay like “this type of thing happens at offices everywhere and I feel like it is wasting all I have invested into you,” instead of congratulating me or being happy for me.
