Maybe that big water pump is engaged and locked up? There should be a lever to disengage that pump. On our old 1928 LaFrance fire engine, it's a big lever on the left side about mid-ship, right level with the pump. It pokes through the running board, once again IIRC. I will take a look at our 28 LaFrance tomorrow when I go to work. Awesome stuff, man! I just love your videos of reviving these old forgotten classics! They all deserve to sing again!

Which is the farthest lever to the right, next to the parking brake. Forward for road, rearward for pump. If possible, push down on the release button, move the lever forward, that should move the transfer case into the road position. Fire pumps are not PTO operated, they're driven thru a transfer case whereby the pump is turned using the full power of the engine via the transmission. The transmission is put in the highest gear to run the pump.

@@rupe53 wonder if you just have a problem with the listings. if it's just sat with a for sale sign on it that's a slow way to sell something nowadays, if you find a website specializing in old firetrucks and note it's for sale you'd likely find a connection for a buyer pretty quickly, even just throwing it up on facebook marketplace and using the right buzzwords will help out.
@rupe537 ай бұрын
@@cpufreak101 It's a VERY specialized section of the market. Even a small truck isn't all that small so people can't just shove in into a standard garage. (mine is 21 feet) Even a small one weighs more than 2-3 cars of similar vintage (mine is almost 9,000 pounds) so you might need a heavy trailer as well. Open cab means "fair weather" for driving too. I didn't even mention parts availability on small production runs. As I said, for most collectors, one is enough. That gear box disconnects the transmission from the drive shaft and engages the pump. On I believe the right side / passenger side down by the running board you have two knobes one is for the clutch the other is to engage the pump or disengage the pump. To operate the pump you would shit the truck from road to pump, then get in the truck and push in the clutch and put the transmission in the gear that gives the pump the right rpm's and let out the clutch. That truck may have a water governor that would keep the pump pressure set at the desired pressure by regulating the engine speed. The governor works off of water pressure. The truck may also have a pump cooler and an auxiliary engine cooler. Volunteer Fireman here learned on a 1951 Ford in joined in1991. We put out some big fires with that old girl.

if the pump wasn't drained and sitting all those year, rust, and that truck has the pto in the cab and one one the pump to engage it, and while it was sitting people playing with it could of engage the one outside on the control panel, and that truck pumped in 3rd gear, i know i have ran one the station i was at had one exactly the same thing in 1979 as a back up truck, it had a 50gpm pump with a 500 boster tank, so inside you pull the level in 3rd gear to engage the pto, and outside to engage the pump and acted like the pump was still engaged.

Dustin, you sure know what yoor a doin. You never cease to amaze me with your ability to jump right into a project and "fire it up," as Elkskins would say. One of your strong points besides gluing a rotor back together that I admire greatly is something I learned too, early on. When you finally get to the point where you're going to try starting a previously seized engine you understand A/;F ratio enough to get it to fire and then keep firing. That is something I watched people I grew up around never quite master. It's also one of the reasons why I use a starting fluid with a high Ether content. That gives me an edge to get things to begin to "help" the cranking speed and get a little more rpm going so I have time to regulate the A/F mixture. When it comes to starting a vehicle engine I have never had fancy new batteries and it was always imperative that if I could get any sign that an engine wanted to start, that I keep it in that vein until it achieves some rpm befor the battery runs down. I never had much money so I had to learn that one. OK Dustin, thank you for the sound rationalizations and logical approach. See you next time. ben/ michigan PS, when I gave you the thumbs up, it didn't tabulate, the icon disappeared. Strange.
