The 1970s 'blue' of Crayola was a pure blue with no evidence of green or violet in it. Thank you so much for this video - it is the most interesting of the historical analysis of Crayola crayons that I have seen.

This video should have a ton more views. I feel like everyone born after about 1920 probably used Crayolas and/or bought them for their kids. That should be near 100% of Americans. You should get with @Cody'sLab, have him fire the X-Ray chromatograph at it, see what kind of heavy metal pigments are in there.

I had the wrong word, but right idea. I'm not a chemist. He should shoot it with the chemical analysis gun.

That's a good idea.

Have you ever noticed that crayons get harder as they age? I bought a brand new box last week and those are almost too waxy but I opened some from my stash from the 90s and those are rock hard, I pressed a little on one and it snapped- like a really dry snap. If you happen to break a new crayon it doesn't snap so hard either.

Yes; I also noticed that, with a plastic case full of 72 crayons from around 2003, but some were much older to fill up the container. Once upon a time, schools used Mammoth crayons (purchasable at that time from British Home Stores) where all the colours were natural landscape hues. These were replaced by Finart cosmic crayons based on 18 colours of the spectrum, with white, pink, flesh, brown, black and grey as additional shades to complete the 24. Back in the 1950s, apart from the black and brown and orange, all the other Finart colours were different: the 'red' was madder lake; the 'yellow' was like 'dandelion' or the 'yellow' in Crayola Fabric crayon pack of eight; the 'green' was more olive green; the 'blue' was Prussian blue - as above; and the 'violet' was an indigo purple, similar to that above, that is now named 'blue violet'. Royal purple is really a violet; but, every colour from current 'violet' to 'violet red' are purples. That is possibly why 'blue violet' is now in the 'blue' family, instead of in the 'purple' family. Crayola 'Eggplant' is a dark violet or dark hyacinth. If there were a separate violet or hyacinth family, then 'indigo', 'periwinkle' and 'bluebell' would probably be in that.

These ones weren’t hard at all other than one of two . I was super surprised.

Outstanding presentation. Violet is my favourite and is equivalent of 'blue violet' now, which is the purpliest in the blue family now. 'Piggy pink' virtually corresponds with 'flesh pink'; 'tropical rain forest' with 'dark green'; 'sepia' with 'burnt umber'; 'shadow' with 'raw umber'; 'brick red' with 'madder lake'; 'midnight blue' with 'prussian blue' and 'maize' or 'metallic sunburst' with 'golden ochre'. Considering the quality of the Queen's Easter speech, I would contribute toward You Tube, if I had the facility!

Incidentally, super glue will mend most crayons.
@JennysCrayonCollection4 жыл бұрын
Yes super glue will also work. I like using the Elmers glue for the box because it’s not as strong if that makes sense. And it dries clear. Especially because the box is really old. I do have some crayons that need some mending. ;)

Personally, I wouldn’t even waste any of the crayon colors to test them, I would preserve them and never use them again, especially since they are 114 Years Old.

That is the hard thing about being a collector, but also having a website about crayons. I want to keep them like that, but I also want to show people what they look like. I am so torn.
