Ossifying fibromyxoid tumor (OFMT) is a rare soft tissue tumor with a very distinct appearance. This video discusses how to make the diagnosis. For more info about criteria for atypical and malignant variants of OFMT, see this paper: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1.... Thanks to my dermpath fellow, Dr. Ed Fulton, for selecting the topic for this video.
Please check out my Soft Tissue Pathology & Dermatopathology survival guide textbooks: bit.ly/2Te2haB

Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful and so helpful pathology videos. Your youtube channel is one of the best resources for learning dermpath & soft tissue pathology. I have a question please, Is there any relation between " Ossifying Fibroma" and "Ossifying Fibromyxoid Tumor (OFMT)" ? Is it true that " Ossifying Fibroma" is a subtype of " (OFMT)" that have no myxoid component?

Is there an association between the desmin expression and the morphology in some slides where it looks like a merged mass of smooth muscle

Not to my knowledge. I don’t think we understand exactly why this tumor sometimes expresses desmin.

was wondering, are these cancerous tumors? What does malignant and locally aggressive mean in these types of tumors?
@JMGardnerMD
@JMGardnerMD 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sharry. "Locally aggressive" usually means that a tumor has the tendency to grow back in the same area after surgery, sometimes multiple times. Malignant usually means that a tumor has the ability to spread to other parts of the body and could potentially be fatal. Ossifying fibromyxoid tumor is a unique tumor that does not fit neatly into the rules. Most cases have a good behavior, but there are some cases that can show malignant behavior. Usually, the malignant ones have certain features under the microscope that the pathologist can recognize to help us identify the cases that have higher risk of behaving badly.

What can cause this cancer? Can it not go away for good?What’s the chances of growing back?
