The UK’s Brexit-induced General Election was always going to be about more than just Brexit. And so it should be. A decade of chronic underinvestment in public services; the growing disparity between rich and poor; our response to the Climate Emergency; and the very future of the United Kingdom itself, all need to be central themes of the campaign over the next month. The one issue that does not need to be part of the debate is antisemitism. At least not the version of the antisemitism debate we’ve been having over the last few years which has become profoundly politicised.

Id never heard of Jeremy Corbyn until he appeared on the news as a contender for the labour leadership campaign, yet in the last few weeks hes spoken more sense to me than any politician within the labour or conservative party that iv ever witnessed on TV, not because he is some super wise man, but just because he seems a normal person of reasonable intelligence n common sense, with sensible humane principles n ideas that most of us share, he genuinely speaking for the human rights of the struggling majority of the people we are, as opposed to the privileged few, n he is not afraid to do so. Hes defo a breath of fresh air amongst todays mental, money polluted mainstream politicians, whos limelight n greedy self serving lifestyles are funded by n stolen from the taxpayer, todays politicians quite clearly being the biggest benefit scroungers of all, that behave like "Stepford wives" waiting to short circuit n blow their fuses, that have sadly have had there consciences gradually eroded n destroyed by the drug of easy money. From what i gather of Jeremy, he has held his head n beliefs high throughout his political n campaigning career, n relentlessly fought for them against the odds. Iv never voted in my life, as have never noticed a UK politician on the tube who dosent appear to have been in some way mentally corrupted n disturbed by their undeserved wealth n destructive positions in power, with the exception of a few, like some clearly good people within the Green Party, n also a one or two within the liberal democrats. Jeremy seems like one of those rare few politicians that remains true to democracy, but with the difference that he may actually get to lead one of the two parties who can govern the UK. Am not sure on all the fundamentals of left n right wing politics, but from what iv gathered over the years, their true meaning is simple, as in "left" wing politics represent fairness n justice for the many, whereas "right" wing represents the greed n self serving of the few. Dont know much, but if nothing happens to turn the scummy tide of political corruption before the next election, then UK democracy may by then be gone, washed up n wasted on dirty, bloody shores forever. Whether or not Jeremy can help stop that, who knows, but right now, the little hope our freedom has left, lies within his hands n the people support he gets, as most of those controlling n running the works of the Conservative n Labour party in their current form, are sadly, clearly insane, n democracy will soon be buried if major change dont happen soon.
@JamesMc20519 жыл бұрын
+Alan Smith Left is big government and greater use of social groups and unions. Right is concerned more with individual liberty and aims to reduce government (although not usually things such as defence spending). Left is concerned more with how society is affected by a change and the right is concerned more with how the individual is affected. People from either extreme often share more in common than they do with the centre, in terms of behaviour. No country is at either extreme. We all run mixed economies with a variable range of private vs public sector. A corrupt left winger will aim to increase their own power through putting themselves and friends in prominent positions in any hierarchy that emerges through social unions and will encourage a brown paper envelope environment. A corrupt right winger will cut through essential public funding to the needy in order to make them and their pals rich on the resulting privatisation. Neither are good or bad on their own. They can both have their problems. Personally I'm at the social democrat part of the axis as I think it serves the entire society better than the other positions but there will always be problems with any ideology you hold.

+Jim McIntosh. Thanks for taking the time to teach me more on the wing thing Jim! I hear it mentioned a lot in politics but have never been clear on all what its about or how left n right wing came to be. Iv just always looked at politicians opinions as either right or wrong n occasionally somewhere in between, n after your explanation, then my compass must point more towards the left than right. I know what you are saying is right, but wonder if the political terms "left n right" true meanings have much worth in the corrupt Westminster political system of today , coz if they still do, n "left" is more concerned with the liberty of society (as in many people), as opposed to "right" ( that is concerned with individual liberty), then both sides are doing a rubbish job. Am also lost, coz individual liberty (aka right), would surely lead to the freedom of whole societies( aka left), if the same rules of freedom for individuals applied to everyone of us fairly, n then surely one would lead to another, but think the UK political system has become so corrupted, that "individual liberty" now mostly seems to apply if it has been bought, which leaves an awful lot of individuals unable to ever be free. The fact that new labour has been bribed n controlled as much as the conservatives by big business over the years, resulting in them pretty much sharing the same sweaty bed, defo hasn't helped the job along. Jeremy Corbyn at least sees what is going on out there, n wants to try change it, though he sure has a task at hand, as the whole of the Westminster bent rulebook will need to be torn up n rewritten, but who knows what can happen with enough people behind him n also the connection power of the internet, n the guys spent most his life campaigning for human rights, so with enough support, maybe he can pull off the UK,s biggest ever campaign to clean up the scummy politics of Westminster once n for all, n help make Britain great again, before its too late. Heck think i better zip it.
@gramursowanfaborden58207 жыл бұрын
technically neither of you are quite correct with regard to left vs right; the system is pretty archaic and has digressed somewhat from it's original meaning, it's not as relevant any more, "libertarian vs authoritarian" is more applicable, and more intuitively named. this website breaks it down pretty well, and can give a good idea of where one lies: www.politicalcompass.org/ being left or right isn't inherently right or wrong, good or bad, they're just different ways to think about things. what's more important is that human beings in powerful positions don't abuse that power, and instead use it to help as many people as possible, Corbyn is the closest anyone has gotten in living memory, we should ensure he gets his chance to prove himself either way.

@@markadams738 Look at most of the comments here. They all regurgitate the BS propaganda spewed out by the Tories and their press baron pals. There have always been individuals in the Labour Party (fewer now than ever, sadly) who recoiled from the 'media training' and 'product creation' that most politicians now represent. The process of selecting candidates for election in nearly all of our political parties involves hostile in-house interviewing and other forms of 'training' on techniques of dissembling without seeming to tell flat-out lies and how to not answer difficult questions and how to 'answer questions' by regurgitating a script which ignores the question completely. Any Q&A with Johnson (for example) involved a demonstration of all of these techniques. There have always been individuals in the Labour Party (and a few from other parties) who have recoiled in disgust at the contempt for and dishonesty to the electorate that these shenanigans represent. Corbyn has always been one of these. No doubt he was persuaded by the advertising execs and PR boys (that the parties all employ) that he had to wear a suit and get rid of the anoraks and have his hair and whiskers cut every week. Beyond that, in more than 30 years of coming across JC occasionally on the telly, I have never seen him deploy the dishonesty of the sales/advertising/ PR BS of the sort resorted to every day by others (like Johnson). (Johnson wasnt shy about flat-out lying too when it suited him, but thats a different issue). JC was thrown out by a coup from right wing Blairites in which they used the media to create a witch hunt over phoney allegations of anti-Semitism and lefty extremism (support for the IRA (!) and other fictional pretexts.) All of it was false. Not a shred of truth to any of their accusations, but they threw enough rubbish around for a long time - and some of it stuck. And that finished him. The right wing of the party then regained control and returned to the Blairite Tory-Lite agenda that they think will get them back to Downing St. Self interest and careerism and cynical dishonesty was the engine behind all of it - not principle, not 'remembering the Holocaust' or 'being strong in the war on terror'. Just ugly selfish careerists who want to reuse Blair's recipe for Downing St cocktails. And all of it a diversion from the Things That Matter. The basic structural problem, the elephant in the room is that less than 5% of the people own 90% of the wealth. The 95% of us who arent billionaires have to scrabble around for our share of the 5% thats left on the table. That 95% of our nations wealth isnt productive, it doesnt get circulated around the economy, it lives offshore in wealth management funds which never put capital at risk. The function it serves is to create debt (and credit) which fund the millionaire games of the City and Wall St. The problem is that the structure is unbalanced. Its unsustainable. At the level of the stock market, the market forces tend always towards the search for short term 'growth' and greater profit in exchange for longer term strategic failure and ever higher risk factors. It's a system which has periodic catastrophe written into its language - but because of the warp speed of developing technology and the nature of global financial interdependence based on credit and debt, we are looking right now into an abyss the like of which the world has never seen before. The crisis of 2008 was just the starter course. Nothing was learned, trillions of dollars were printed and handed to the banks and theyve created a new bubble of insider markets and continue and perpetuate the creative fiction of stock values. It's just a question of time - but this time around the magnitude of the failure can be reasonably predicted as both unprecedented and unmanageable. There is a cure for this vicious cycle. It's no secret, but no politician has either the courage to speak to it, never mind advocate for it. For a private citizen to own more than (for arguments sake) £500 million is both a threat to our economic well-being - and to democracy itself (because their money buys politicians And Government Policy).... until this basic structural reality is taken on board by every voter we will never escape from this rigged economic game we live out our lives by. It must be recognised that people who own billions of money are a threat to our nations security. Human beings are social animals. Our basic instinct is towards co-operation, the creation of families, kinship groups, friendship groups. Competition is part of that dynamic but it shouldnt be The Only One - which is the way our society is developing. This (the UK) is a rich country with lots of resources and is full of talent - but our roads are those of a poor third world country and our education and health systems are going up in smoke. There's a simple remedy. People should rally behind the fact that the overweening power of excessive wealth is actually a repulsive form of behaviour which shouldnt be lawful or tolerable. The excess wealth of these people should circulate in our economy through decent dignified work and long term strategic investment in the future. Then we can build a better society with proper homes to live in - and roads and schools and places for kids to play - and return the NHS to what it was promised to be. (And allow the government to invest in the kind of infrastructure and industry that the future will need, instead of stagnating and wallowing in the lies and the contempt and incompetence of sold out politicians and the wealthy men they're the servants of, wasting our time arguing about foreigners - set upon each other like dogs by cynical political 'messaging'.) I dont know if Jeremy Corbyn could have gripped this nettle, but he would have moved us forward. My gripe with him was that he was surrounded by second and third raters. The Labour Party has taken severe damage since the days of Kinnock and Brown - mainly inflicted by Blair and to a large extent the Labour Party doesnt know what it is any more. Politicians are also scared of getting the same beating and slander J.C. was subjected to. Starmer seems to have accepted a definition of anti-Semitism which includes 'criticism of Israel'. (Which is frankly insane.) Professor Finkelstein (among other eminent academics) is anti-Semitic then? Smear campaign from a Labour Party that has forgotten what it is and who it belongs to. One thing is for sure, anyone advocating policies which would threaten the obscene wealth and unelected power of the billionaires would immediately become their enemy. They'd be set upon by their sold out politicians, vilified in the media in a way that would make the treatment of JC look like child's play. And probably worse even than that. But if we want a better, smarter world that has moved on from the primitive feudal ideas of power residing with the wealth. If we want to have birds in the sky and fish in the seas which clean rivers run towards - then somone has to take on this issue that everyone is afraid to mention.

The Tories say that austerity cuts haven't damaged public services. NHS staff (nurses, doctors, GPs) routinely say the cuts have damaged the NHS. Police and community support officers routinely say the cuts have damaged the police force and their ability to protect us. Teachers and headmasters and independent analysts routinely say cuts have damaged schools. Statistics show there has been a rise in homelessness since the cuts have been implemented. Statistics show that real wages have gone down in the UK since the cuts have been implemented. You've gotta ask yourself: "why do I believe the Conservatives and not all this hard evidence to the contrary? Why do I want to live in this kind of society?' ... Cuts were never necessary. Fiscal stimuli and investment in infrastructure would have boosted the economy more quickly and spared us the need to cut vital public services. Don't believe me? Ask Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman, or Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, or Cambridge economics professor Ha Joon Chang, or Harvard economics professor Ken Rogoff, or the International Monetary Fund, or the Economist magazine, or the King's Fund, or The Royal Society of Medicine etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.

I wonder what Cameron's Spin Doctors answers would be?
@bishopofbolok9 жыл бұрын
+Cleopatra Anthony, not sure what Camerons spin doctors answers may be, but are defo fuel for thought! even though would probably be cringe worthy n make people need to barf after the laugh! I know Jeremy's answers are a little airy fairy here, but you know they are more from the heart n head, without external influence. The guy shows genuine signs of a kind, caring heart, a rare thing amongst virtually all mainstream labor n conservative politicians in the limelight today. Its no wonder that Jeremy won the leadership campaign today, n thank god he did, way to go Jeremy!! But as the man himself points out, this is just the first staging post, that needs to be built on a rung at a time, in order to reach the upper half of the freedom ladder again, amongst the many greedy, slimy slippery pissed off political snakes out there to slide back down on. While contemplating Camerons possible spun out replies to the same set of questions you suggest ( that without spin doctors to pre answer for him, he would probably just start spinning around on the spot whilst repeating the words " West ham, West ham, Pastie tax", in response to every question, like a malfunctioning Dalek would do the word "exterminate", until smoke started venting from his ears n mouth before short circuiting), I meanwhile imagine what his honest answers could be, if he was given a truth serum before being asked the same set of questions, then his response may be: 1, The one thing you cant live without, = Victimizing n often fooking off to die the most ill n vulnerable in society, at the benefit of paying for the likes of my unearned, unjust luxury life, including my lifestyle advisor n personal hair dresser that highlights my butt faced head perfectly... ( Would sure love their job, just for a day, though that is all it would last!) 2, What makes you cry = I haven't shed a tear for other peoples suffering since my money washed, moral destroyed conscience deserted my brain, but the thought of not being able to have my potential new Eton bullyboy inspired train set constructed (the HS2 railway), as a trade off for most of the rest of the entire "sold off" poorly maintained, quick profit driven UK railway system, makes me spit my dummy n cry n fill my pampers. 3, What makes you laugh = Causing further misery n suffering to those already desperate, especially when in the company of Ian Duncan Smith 4,What hero you would want at your table = Best not answer honestly, but to give a clue, he was also a feeble deluded bully like me, but with a silly walk n even dafter mustache. 5, Favorite film = Havent the emotions left inside to appreciate a fine movie, n not many films about spoiled deluded power hungry brats beyond redemption were made as far as am aware? Some bloody good pornos out there though
