Jeremy the double haul casting technique would help you greatly for distance casting or you could go with Spey rods which for men start at 16 feet in length!

Like your show and channel Jeremy. If I may suggest when you cast you look like you are using your whole upper body. Try casting like you have a book under your upper arm and you can’t let it fall . Then swing the rod tip from 10 to 2 o’clock using the rods power to cast back then forward.

Go watch saltwater flat/skiff fly fishing. Heavy rods and lines need a bit more body English than a chalk stream 4 weight cane rod. You can't make a 50 foot cast on a 9 weight rod swinging 2 and 10.

just explain that the line must extend completely behind you before shooting forward: this is the simplest and easiest explanation for learning to cast; i always listen guides saying stuff like "2 o'clock, 10 o'clock" when it is obvious that you can cast even with the rod tilted at 90° from you, even at 180° if there was space below us...😁 The only constant is understanding the concept of propulsion, even if only instinctively.

its to hold the fly line so it doesn't get washed down stream and get tangled, its mainly used when you are doing some form of faster strip retrieve

In this case its not required. My guess... the producer suggested it which begs the questions - doesnt Jeremy realize the piece of equipment is not needed and looks rather amateurish.

I'm a big fan of concept behind Jeremy's video's. However, as an avid fly fisherman who recently returned from Mexico catching Tarpon I'm a bit distracted by his lack of skill for this style of fishing. The setting for this video is amazing and love to see unique species caught fly fishing but the amateurish skill and outfitting of Jeremy is a big distraction. Please go back to big tackle for big fish.
