Jeremy Irons reads Lewis Carroll's famous nonsensical poem. The plot follows a crew of ten trying to hunt the Snark, which may turn out to be a highly dangerous Boojum. The poem is dedicated to young Gertrude Chataway, whom Carroll met at the English seaside town Sandown in the Isle of Wight in 1875.

A wonderful and captivating reading, only enhanced, I think, by the unusual online format - it seemed almost as if Jeremy Irons was reading just for me. I can't help but think that this surreal poem is strangely pertinent to these times, when everything feels slightly off and unfamiliar yet is still able to be interesting and illuminating nonetheless. Let's just hope that a Boojum doesn't make that quality of day-to-day life disappear. Thank you for the video!

Several fans asked Lewis Carroll - in person, and by mail - what he had in mind, what the poem meant. His answer was always the same: "I don't know!"

Jeremy must be a bit lonely now his main challenger in wonderful English speaking accent, Alan Rickman, who I still have a mad passion for....is (sniff!) now (slight sob) is now (subtle catch in throat) GONE!!!! (loud weeping and wailing!!!!!) tis true. I loved both Irons in "Brideshead Revisited" and in many other fillums.

it annoys me that it's written rhythmically but everyone reads it conversationally

Me too. These arrogant actors don't trust the poem-its rhythm, rhyme and voice-to do the work and overlay their own actoorish voices -which sound like actors imitating actors but not real people talking. You can read a poem like this trusting its internal beat to do the work: the meanings come out automatically. You are right to be annoyed and I am so glad somebody else is.

Now, if that isn't the end tale of what a Biden-Har...oh, I can't stand it, I'll have to change my name...will be....I don't know WHAT. It's almost like a poetic version of "Nineteen Eighty-Four"'s prequel, I dunno what.....
