This is one of the greatest adventures they had. The boulder field nightmare and James and Jeremey falling out trying to put the tents up was great TV. Also Jeremy deciding he’s had enough and just gunning it through the ice blocks with the inevitable breaking of the truck. “POWER!!” Haha.

This aired in 2007, the first Top Gear special in 1080p. 17 years ago. 17 years. I can't believe it. I literally grew up with these blokes. And with them, the 2000s and my childhood is kept forever on these specials.

The best special in my opinion because it's a challenge that was just so absurd and hasn't been topped. It was the most dangerous and can you imagine Wilman pitching it to the BBC, he must have been staggered when they said yes. It was topical (for the time) and the full version at least with the crashed plane and abandoned outpost did more for their exploration badges than the Africa Special ever did. Plus, it was real, there's no doubt about that.
@MrBrownie77Ай бұрын
Yep. Getting stuck in the boulder field and James and Jeremy falling out trying to get the tents set up in the storm was great TV. Plus what they asked Richard to do was insane. Never skied before, zero experience, out there all day in the cold. Genuinely impressive. Would love to have seen them putting James on the sled instead.
@13XerroАй бұрын
@@MrBrownie77Only way they were getting James on that sled was if they tied him to it. The sled suited Hammond far more being younger, and fitter and he enjoys that kind of stuff.

They said in an interview later that it was never close, from the moment they left Hammond fell hours behind, they ended up picking hammond up later because it was pointless to allow him to continue for hours. Also they didn't actually get to the pole, where they ended up was something like 1200km away from the geographical north pole and 150 miles away from the magnetic north pole, poor hammond couldn't carry on so a helicopter was sent to just pick them all up and end the show, loved the episode though, especially clarkson getting thrown in the ice by the pixilated special forces man, clarksons "How dare you" while hammond and may looked horrified was legit funny as f**k!
@MrBrownie77Ай бұрын
I always wondered what happened to Hammond and assumed he was picked up or helicoptered out. Surprised to hear that they didn’t drive to the actual pole though.
