+Gyorkland Basically,a good cinematographer searches for a light and natural movement of the camera. Chivo in this one(probably by Iñarritu's wish) was just too wooried to make the scenes look pretty,so many times on the movie the camera takes an off sudden turn just to focus on Dicaprio in a beautiful landscape or other scene of the same kind. That's an example of a forced cinematography. Birdman(a movie that I personally hate) has a good cinematography,the camera slowly follows the environments and characters,even by the wrong meanings that's a good cinematography

Just because a man works extremely hard at his job doesn't mean he's purely doing it to win some award that doesn't even really defy his talent. Leonardo Dicaprio knows he's great, we know he's great, get over the whole Oscar thing and just acknowledge that he's a kickass actor.

You do realize that actors who have an Oscar to their name are paid anywhere from $2,000,000 to $10,000,000 more money than actors who do not, right? That's why Oscar's are so desired among actors.

+Sam A I agree with you--to a point. In any career, especially when you've made it to the top like he has, I think you have a drive to earn what it seen as the top award--the Oscar. So, although I think he (and most actors who are A-list enough to hand pick their roles) picks movies and parts that interest him, it's also hard to believe he wouldn't have that in the back of his mind somewhere. I don't mean that as a criticism of him at all since I like his roles and acting and I liked him when I met him at a BAFTA event several years ago. I just think it's natural to want to earn that achievement. (Yes, I understand a lot of people think that Oscars aren't won, that they're bought with strong campaigns, but I still think people want them just as much.)

Ha that's the one plot element I told my friends I didn't like. He heard Leo was maybe alive and sends the gang with torches all night to get him. Then fitz steals the whole company's money (all the trappers pay day) and murders a kid and everyone's like nope we got black smithing to do lol. I get why-it set up the one-v-one conflict but that one scene didn't make sense. I took it as they didn't know if Fitz was even close and it cold be days to find him so others didn't want to come and they needed to be quick but still wasn't really making sense. Still the movie is in my top 5 favorites. I wish I had an imax at home, it's was beautiful. I saw it twice the second time I was just marveling at the scenery and couldn't believe how they got to these locations.

+John Smith They where doing a sweep of the area looking for Glass, which requires a lot of people. Hunting someone and tracking them is much easier with 2-4 people, because lot's of people make noise, are slow and require organization. If you knew that 40 people where chasing you in the wilderness, you would know where they are pretty much at all times, or at least a general idea of where they are. Any fires they lit would be larger and create more smoke, they would require more supplies, which would encumber them and make them slower. Whereas if you knew 2 people where after you, they would move much quieter and be significantly less obnoxious. The Captain most likely went to regain his fortunes and Hugh went for revenge and because he knew the terrain.
@AUPGrade
@AUPGrade 5 жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-xl4sx It's fair to deduct that the Captain didn't want everybody to know that the money was gone, and face a riot for that. Maybe, he didn't want to give the same treacherous ideas to the other people under his command, mainly because they were poor, desperate, frontier workers whose only way of surviving was to take advantage of sudden situations like this one. Also, the search and rescue company just arrived from recovering Hugh Glass, they weren't ready for another expedition, neither physically nor willing to do it for free, once they new there was no money. Or what if they didn't found Fitzgerald? How was the Captain supposed to control their discontent after the unpaid effort?

+98KB TheMovement Almost everybody's getting an Oscar these days. Everyone except Leo. But think of it this way: if everyone's getting an Oscar, nobody's getting an Oscar. In a way, I think the fact that he doesn't have an Oscar yet makes him way more unique as an actor. If he got one now, he's just going to be one more name at the bottom of the "Actors Who Won An Oscar" list...
@doughbafett
@doughbafett 8 жыл бұрын
+98KB TheMovement Leo will probably get it this year. Redmayne would've had a good shot had he not already won it last year. Matt Damon will probably get nominated for The Martian, but that was also a survival movie(a better one too, BTW), so the Academy will default to Leo over him. Fassbender won't win for Steve Jobs since that movie tanked and frankly wasn't that good anyway. And I could see Will Smith or Michael B. Jordan getting nominated to quell the "acting nominees are all white" outcry from last year's ceremony, but neither will win. So by process of elimination combined with the physical hell Leo went through to film this movie, he'll likely be awarded Best Actor.

Excellent film. I wish they would have been more accurate to the historical events, but it wouldn't have been as satisfying because Hugh Glass ended up not getting his revenge like we see in the film. In the end there wasn't much conclusion for Glass. He was killed by Indians a few years after he was attacked by the bear. The fact that he crawled several miles alone after the attack to stay alive is crazy, especially for the time period.

What an absolutely BEAUTIFUL movie. All those vistas, the wide sweeping shots of the wilderness, looking up at the treetops with the sparks from the fire swirling up... wow. It looked realistic and 3D at the same time. It was the first time I actually wanted a movie to be in 3D/IMAX, but I doubt I'd have been able to handle that. Definitely going to see this one again on digital.

I saw the trailer for this movie and immediately picked up it was filmed in Canada. (Some of it. The ending they apparently had to go to an Argentinian mountain to get what the wanted.) That was enough to get my interest, as I find a lot of films only film here in the summer, as if they're scared to show how snowy it can get any other season. The fact that it's got a cast full of phenomenal actors is also a bonus. Even 'Sargent Eyebrows.'

the great part is... the director hired real mountain man reenactors, people who dedicate their lives to perfecting historical realism and accuracy, as extras and consultants. they threw the actors into the wilderness to get really, really, cold and survive like mountain men did back then. as a reenactor i can appreciate the level of detail and accuracy this movie produced. DiCaprio did an amazing job and he earned every award he should get for this movie. i loved this movie. it makes me want to pack up and go reenacting in the wilderness

So, got back from seeing the film, wholeheartedly agree with this review. Cinematography is beautiful, acting is excellent, and most surprising of all, I'd say that this is a very thematic piece - the idea that savagery is the true nature of not only Man (ala Lord of the Flies), but the world as well, and how the revenge tale is just part of the larger picture. Great stuff.

I did see it and can't think of anything bad to say about it. It was simply excellent. The best telling of Hugh Glass and his legend to date, for sure. Showing the culture of the mountain man that was unique to the mid to late 1800s is fascinating. You had to have a damn strong constitution to live like that back then. I liked the telling of the young Jim Bridger, a legend in his own right, and it would be AWESOME if they did a sequel about him.
