I live in Alaska. I take people to see bears in the summer. I'm trained in bear safety. I can honestly say that the bear attack was the most realistic thing I've ever seen related to large brown / grizzly bears. And when he starts moving slightly I was sitting in the theatre saying to myself "Just don't move! Play dead!" And then he moves. And then the bear turns back around... Great review.

I think it was that Hugh Glass was portrayed in this movie as always seeing revenge as the answer. Bear attacks him buT leaves him once it thinks he’s dead. What Glass does? Try to attack it back (or actually shoot it but he still could’ve waited) Wrong move cuz it attacks him back again and worse. Same thing with Fitzgerald. Glass kinda didn’t exactly win at the end because him going after Fitzgerald alllll that way to avenge him and go through that fight despite his previous unhealed injuries and getting even some more...just for revenge?! It’s like the movie was saying if you go after revenge you will lose. And that’s what his dead wife was saying too.

@@noamias4897 Sorry if this is late (3 years too late lol) but he probably wasn't sure if the bear was actually going to eat him or not. In the IRL story the bear did tear a lot of him up and fed her cubs with it, so that's what he thought it was going to do. Maybe he considered two possibilities and chose the wrong one in the heat of the moment?

everyone who keeps saying Leo needs to win, needs to realize one thing. Winning an award doesnt make you a great man. and Leonardo has already proven that with his humanity and philosophy towards making the world a better place. that right there, is worth more than any stupid award.

So no, they wouldn’t be the same, AND he also killed the captain of the crew and would’ve been hanged for treason anyways.

+Sreehari Namikaze It's not because its a long movie, but that you feel how long the movie is. Idk if the flashback sequences were pretentious, but i did feel like they were unnecessary,. Unless i am missing something (If i am, do fill me in) but they didn't really serve much purpose to the film besides the first couple flashbacks that establishes the history of Glass and his family. A movie i'd consider pretentious is Fight Club. Love that film, but the narration can get very pretentious, as if each time it's present Edward Norton should turn to the camera and say "Now wasn't that clever?"

Yeah but what about the imagery makes it pretentious? I think the word is overused, the filmmakers may just have been trying to provide a stimulating and interesting barage of visual imagery. I generally like it when filmmakers try to do something unique or interesting. Sometimes they fail, but if that's pretension, bring on the pretension because that's what I call reaching for the stars and not falling back on traditional formulas.

The Revanant is one of the greatest films I have ever seen in my life. I'm completely serious. That film effected me, I was completely mesmerized from start to finish.... Still am honestly. Every single aspect of that film was perfectly executed, the acting (Leo gives the best performance of his career), locations, sound design... And oh my god. The cinematography was honestly the best I have ever witnessed in my life. For the first time in my life I have experienced a film that was so expertly designed and crafted that the screen disappeared and simply became me, in this scenario next to these people. Holy hell..... 10/10 an actual 10/10. Not one flaw was found with this film.

I thought the surreal dream sequences served as a nice break from the harsh realism of the rest of the movie. Visually interesting and helps you to kind of "reset" before launching back into the next act. The surreal visuals and sounds in those scenes also works to highlight just how realistic the rest of the film is by comparison. Edit: That might be my favorite Hardy/Bane impression lol

I read the book (by Michael Punke) in anticipation of the film, and it will probably be the case that the movie trumps the literature. This isn't to say that the book is substandard, by any means. Punke's style is good, and he handled the intriguing subject matter in a highly capable manner. It's just that the the confluence of directing, cast, cinematography, etc. is so stellar that I can't imagine the film playing second-fiddle to the source material.

"pretentious"? I really wish Chris would expound on something like this, it comes off as one of the worst criticisms ever if it's not backed up; which isn't helped by the fact that it's a word that's more often then not completely misused, especially when referring to imagery.

I'm willing to bet the dream sequences are simply .pngs of Christopher Nolan, Lars Von Trier and Henry Cavill Superman pasted against a 4K Space Wallpaper as the track "Time" from Inception plays in the background. Beautiful............................... Maybe throw in a Nicolas Winding Refn V.O. in which he discusses the imagery of "Fists" in Only God Forgives. Perfect.

I choose films for people to watch on campus for free. My only problem with this movie is that they changed the story to make us care about Hugh Glass. I get why they did - the historical Hugh was more like the Terminator, an unpleasant bastard who pulled off an impossible physical fit by killing a bear with a knife, walking back to civilization with multiple broken limbs through a blizzard, and then shooting his former friends in the bar where they were toasting his memory. The movie is making Leo struggle MUCH more than Hugh, to make it more 'real' than the unbelievable crap the real guy pulled off. I think it will be good, but as a history buff I'd like to see the real hard-ass SOB Hugh Glass in a movie.

Good review, I've been following your channel for some time now. As you said, half of the movie was the way it was shot, the cinematography and the amazing camera work. The initial fight scene reminded me a bit of the Omaha Beach scene in Saving Private Ryan in the way of how realistic it's done, you feel like you're actually in there, thanks to the long take and the wide shots. I must correct you in the pronunciation of Alejandro's name: it's Iñárritu, the accent marks which one is the stressed syllable, so the 'a', not the 'i'.

So question Chris - I haven't seen the film yet but I've heard nothing but insanity about the lengths the director went to to get these shots and make this film. Sometimes rehearsing for hours in a day just to film for 15 minutes before they lost the light. With all that he went through - don't you think some of that pretentiousness you mentioned can be easily overlooked as... well... deserved? Sort of like - "Yeah, it's a bit overblown here, but you went through literal hell to get these shots so.... Good on you bro." ? I'm just curious, because as an aspiring filmmaker I'm really looking forward to seeing this film, and while I obviously haven't seen the scenes your talking about, that kind of an approach would make sense to me given what we know.

I love your reviews dude! This is exactly what i thought about The Revenant. Your pronunciation was almost perfect, by the way. I also thought those dreams sequences where a little too pretencious, maybe it would have been better if they just kept it realistic since it was already so visceral. However, i applaude them for making this movie the way they did. I mean, it's a revenge western; ''revenge'' is almost a sub category within the genre or sub genre, or whatever you want to call it, that is western. There are a whole bunch of movies with similar stories that they could have taken inspiration from, yet The Revenant is like no other movie that i can remember, they took a very simple concept that has been done multiple times before and made it unique. Also, that shirt is awesome.

In my opinion, the dream like imagery wasn't pretentious at all...i think it was earned through the dialogue (sparingly unveiled) in those sequences and in his head as he's trying to survive. I also didn't mind the run-time, in fact, I wanted more. I didn't think it was possible for Alejandro Innuritu to top Birdman, but in my opinion, he's done it. I absolutely adored this film, and I can't wait to see it again! 10/10 for me...great video Chris! I love the channel!

I think the ones who deserve the most credit for the stunning cinematography in this movie is actually the ones who have developed the incredible cameras that are available today. As is said in this video, all the lighting is natural. So as nice as that is, it really comes down to simply being in the right place at the right time. Not all that difficult. But now we have this incredible recording equipment that is able to capture these stunning images that can considered nothing short of technological marvels.

Nice to hear someone love this movie as much as I do. I hope DiCaprio wins this time. I say this over and over again, but one of the things I loved/love about this movie is that paired with its exquisite cinematography is, in my experience, a tangibleness. It felt like I was there, the cold, the misery, in the little smoke hut..etc.. Being a Native Alaskan, I loved every minute of it for exactly that quality. However, I could not watch the Grizzly scene. I'll work up to it. probably. For the first time ever I absolutely loathed the character Tom Hardy played. The/his ending was so righteous. It pleased me well! :D Incomparable, the best movie I've seen in my long long life. Thanks for the great reviews.

So a lack of script but a beautiful film deserves an A+? People throw out A+ or 10/10 way too easily these days. It's like anything slightly lower (which is still an incredible rating) means the person must have not liked it. Today's audiences are way too extreme in their ratings whether they loved it or hated it. I rarely give out perfect scores, maybe 5-10x in my entire life!
