Classicist here: Regarding the Colosseum naval battle thing, just for anyone who’s interested as lots of people seem to be talking about it online. Yes they did really flood the arena for naval battle re-enactments…but only for the first ten or so years of it being opened (c. 80CE). When they then dug out the underneath of it to hold gladiators, animals etc they obviously stopped doing naval battles as they couldn’t flood it anymore as the underneath was hollow and being used. You can still see today, and go down into, these underground chambers. We see the underneath of the Colosseum in the first movie, and see animals being released to the upper floor from there, which is set in 180CE. So with this sequel being set around 200CE, and after having seen on screen the underneath of the Colosseum in the first one, we can confidently say they wouldn’t have had naval battles at that time, and it contradicts what we see in the first movie. Does this ultimately matter? Nah. Can it still be a good movie? Of course. The first one got things “wrong” and changed things and it was a masterpiece. Just thought I’d chime in for anyone who likes little bits of trivia like that. 😊

Ridley Scott loves to twist historical events and characters to tell a good story The original movie was based off a fictional book By no means, is Gladiator a historically accurate movie Only an entertaining historical movie That being said, I always love learning about history. And the fact that they used to have Naval battles in the Colosseum blew my mind. That’s like taking an NFL stadium and flooding it to play water football

I’ve just come back from watching gladiator 2. I would give it a 3 out of 10. Filling the Colosseum with water and put sharks in it was a bridge too far for me. I was ready to get up and walk out at that point, but then I realised my friends were with me. I couldn’t leave them behind.
@chrisdodds1877
@chrisdodds1877 4 күн бұрын
The filling of the colosseum is actually historically accurate. The sharks... not so much... I thought it was ok, just ok, not great, not terrible. The acting from most of the supporting cast was the stand out thing - easily the best point. But everything else felt a bit rushed, a bit hoping from 'cool' plot point to plot idea without trying to make it flow or make full sense, Denzel's intrigue plot was great and easily the most entertaining part of the film and I was rooting for him to win (because then the plot would be interesting), and I was disappointed when they went for the 'happily ever after - bad guy died because plot demanded it' ending rather than acknowledge the power vacuum in Rome which any Roman general would be jumping to take advantage of. As a stand alone film its decent and entertaining, as a gladiator successor its disappointing and unneeded.

Someone did a video essay pointing out that was purposeful because Gladiator had just re-elevated sword and sandal epics for its time, so to resurrect the pirate genre, PotC tried to make their period piece more epic feeling by imitating Gladiator's soundtrack. You got it right, accurate results rank higher from my understanding as specificity is key in finding the correct search. Since the movie title uses Roman numerals in promotional materials THAT will be preferred by Google (YT might differ though, not 100% on that). Even if MORE people use the 2 when searching, safe to assume the algorithm will compensate. However, I'm just someone who sort of navigates SEO in an innate way, more of a knack for it than anything else. I pay attention to how media is performing and why. Quality content matters most though! Btw, been a channel watcher for years; keep up all the stellar work man 👍👍👍🎞🎬📽

That's what I'm recommending to my friends. I just left the cinema and everything in the film felt pointless. like it happens because it happens. Not even because it needs to for the plot. it just feels like my dreams where there's a series of events vaguely linked to eachother. No real emotion behind any actions. The only believable performance in the whole film was from the twins, and they were surrounded by such dead expressions from the rest of the cast that it just feels out of place. Motivations within the film are also superfluous and changed from scene to scene, characters just accept random events at face value, basically shrug and go "Oh, that happened? Ok." In the 1st film the Maximus' son was literally CRUCIFIED. In the sequel someone just kinda dies in a situation where it was literally the expected outcome, he freaks out for a second, then he goes "Huh, guess I need to get revenge."

I often thought that the biggest mistake Ridley Scott did with the first Gladiator movie was when he wasn't a producer of the first movie so when Gladiator won Best Picture, he didn't accept the trophy for himself because he wasn't the producer. I think about this a lot as it was his close chance to get an Oscar trophy if he was the producer like he is with his recent movies. It was old film, shot by shot, scene after scene. This was the sam movie with the same story just... more than "big shoes to fill" it's "AGAIN". [spoilers] We start in battle - again, second scene is in small deserd rena - again, next is speaking with gladiator's master - again, scene after scene it is the same movie just worse. I don't like Denzel in this. Everyone says how cool he was - he wasn't. There's smth like playing too much. He plays too much. He even jokes with cutted head while trying to became new emperor. It is freaking weak, odd, over the top. Remember good battles? Remember how Maximus ordered people around him? How they fight with tactics in field? Forget about it. Most tactician thing in this whole film was scene when main hero blinds rhino with sand. Yeah, he blided already blind animal. Also, rhino had a rider cause ofc he had. This is closer to superhero move then to action/history/drama. If someone told me that this film is dumb go and have fun... I would had fun there. But I expected smth else. I wanted Gladiator and I get 300.

Yo, absolutely agree. I was thinking the same after watching a few reactors watch the first one. For example, he goes home, but has to train others in his town to fight when Rome comes a-knocking. Or anyone else. My history is a bit fuzzy on Roman times (more an ancient Greece era guy), so perhaps its just raiders or mercs. In any case, he takes what Max taught them to teach his own people: how to fight like legionaires! Perhaps even combine it with their own fighting style. You have a poc in a lead role, maybe a south asian or turk as a bbeg (thinking most likely antag groups). Djmon's character isn't a gary stu, and in many ways a true inheritor of max who was a farmer himself, pressed into service. It checks hollyweird's boxes while also, at least in capable hands, carrying on the spirit of the first without *being* a rehash of the first one. Unfortunately, it looks like they made the same film with a bigger CG budget. So typical hollywood sequel nonsense. Hell, could have had Denzel in it too! Oh well… cheers friend.

The acting is not very good, mainly because imo the characters development (or lack of) are really poorly written, and don't get me started on historical accuracy. (Though it wasn't expecting historical accuracy) The story was also so predictable and at times just boring. I went in with pretty low expectations and yet I was still underwhelmed. I think the main problem for Gladiator 2 is that by being the sequel to Gladiator, people and up comparing it to Gladiator. On it's own, Gladiator 2 is a decent movie. Good, not great, but enjoyable. Acting was a bit stiff, with the exception of Denzel. Completely ok, though, it's a good time. Compared to the first movie, however, it's crap. It would have been better if they called it a "spiritual successor" rather than a sequel. The first movie didn't even need a sequel, so it seems a bit weird that they made one after all these years.

I am looking forward to seeing Gladiator II, but to tell you the truth, I remember when the idea of a Gladiator prequel was making rounds inside the rumor mill. It was purported to be a story about how Maximus rose to power over the years preceding the events of Gladiator. Now, I am not sure if that is true, or if it was, indeed, just a rumor. Either way, I think that could have been a very good film.

They could still do that with a new actor [like Furiosa].

The OG Gladiator is one of my favorite movies of all time. TBH I have less than zero desire to watch this. Maybe when it's out on streaming.

@@Nicotine46 N-No? I don't understand your logic there, friend. I love the original, and I don't really care about a knock-off sequel that didn't need to and shouldn't really have happened.

@@lizzy-np2dr Maybe it shoudn't, but now it's there and it's not like a cheap knock-off. It's Ridley Scott himself returning in the arena and the cast is strong. Also, it seems like a respectful sequel to the original. So you should at least be very curious.

As someone who's favorite movie has been Gladiator since I saw it 24 years ago... The movie starts off strange, like the first 30 minutes, I'll admit. To the other reviewers walking out after 30 minutes I can see why, HOWEVER the movie gets MUCH better as it progresses. It pays a lot of homage to Gladiator which I really appreciated. I won't spoil anything but I think it was a good sequel. Of course, not better than the original. Original is a masterpiece. and my #1 all time But this was great and I was entertained indeed. Also I want to add, that there is NO JAY Z AND KAYNE MUSIC IN THE MOVIE!!! Thankfully...

After suffering through those last 3 Alien films, I've learned that Ridley Scott has lost whatever directorial genius he once possessed.

he is a good director, but he could never tell a good script from a bad one. he got lucky with alien, blade runner and gladiator, but then you see the alien prequels and napoleon and... yeah
