I'm doing a similar project (still gathering parts) but your videos are helping me a lot. I've got a tomos a3 from 1985, and I've virtually planned to do everything you've done to yours (the bikes are basically the same, very minor design differences) and I swear im not copying because I bought my bike about 8 years ago to restore, and about 4 years ago came up with my conversion plans as i decided I didn't want to restore it, more redesign it to my own design. The difference with my bike is it has a linger seat with room underneath for some battery cells in a pack but not enough, so what I'm going to do is cut a long door the length of the tank either on one side or on top, with a hinge so I can make up a full battery pack that will sit neatly inside, and ince the cover is closed it will look pretty much the same shape as it was before. The sad thing is I'll never get to ride it because 3 years ago I lost my leg due to an infection when I got COVID and my other leg is pretty much frigged aswell. But I still want to complete this project, and then maybe if I can raise enough money from its sale, I'm going to build myself an on and off road mobility scooter. I've got a scooter chair at the minute, but it's not much good for me, and I had pretty bad accident in it last week it tipped up on a kerb and I fell out and it landed on top of me. It's no good but it's all I could afford at the time. My buddy is going to help me build both the moped and my scooter, and I'm going to give him my old scooter to use to build his kid an electric go kart. Like I say, it's not any good for me but it will make his kid an amazing nippy little racer. Love your videos. Just found them today. Subscribed.

@@JeremyMakesThings definitely interested in that build. A few friends and I were trying to convert a 1980 jaguar. We found that doing a Lexus Electric motor off of their hybrid is the easiest and cheapest way with about 300hp. Shaped exactly like a traditional transmission

Great job of the battery case. Fitting with the general aesthetics of the era/fabrication style while not trying to pretend to be something it’s not(gas powered).

I've got a Baja Heat frame I'm thinking of doing this with, but something like a moped frame like from a Honda C70 / C90 like you did is another option. Three wheeled trikes also look interesting. Still mulling it over what frame I want to use. I see a bunch of 21700s in that industrial battery. Where did you get it off of, ebay? I bought a ton of them new to use on my Quadcopters, but not that many. Most people use a spot welder on these, but I actually played it dangerous and soldered my leads to the batteries to combine them. I store mine in the lettuce crisper tray in my refrigerator at storage voltage to keep them degrading... it's been 3 years now and so far it has worked. Just drill holes in your bin in case something spills and fills with water so as not to ruin yourbatteries. I hammered some license plate holders just yesterday... for my motorbikes. I've hammer build a battery box for my Honda Rebel, and built Lion packs, but not one for the other at the same time... so... interesting. The downside is you'll have to make a custom battery for this any time you need to replace it, which is probably a PITA compared to buying something off the shelf drop in.

I was hoping you were going to put the batteries in the gas tank. I have a similar project on hold right now because I'm not sure if cutting open the gas tank will cause structural damage to the frame. So would have been nice to see you do that... :D Oh well now I'll have to try it myself.
@JeremyMakesThings Жыл бұрын
The tank is definitely structural on this one. I think with proper reinforcement it could be done though.

@JeremyMakesThings Жыл бұрын
I’ve got a couple projects I want to knock out, one is tangentially related to the Jeep (as was this one), and then I want to go full speed on getting the body of the Jeep wrapped up…and then on to the conversion. I’ve been do a little bit of behind scenes work on it along the way too, and I’ve been amassing parts that need to go on it.

Couple things to say for your battery endevors. A very good reference for Li battery builds and knowledge is " DIY Lithium Batteries, How to build your own battery packs" by Micah Toll and published by him. Can't go wtong with this tome, helped me tremendously when I was exploring the subject. Second, would suggest you read article in todays, (11/11/2023) saturdays/sundays edition of the Wall Street Journal. I believe you will find the EV article in the business section. It'll give you some food for thought while you consider your jeep build. Elsewise , really enjoyed the work done in your video this week. Thanks for the time you put in for us "nerds". Please take care of your hands, they are as important as your tools.

Cool. I found an article about needing more utility poles. It’s an interesting consequence, but the bigger issue is really the fact that we haven’t been investing in our electrical infrastructure for so long. I ordered the book too. Should be a good reference to check my work against.

Is it REALLY cost effective using smaller cells like this? 🤔 Another question, is once you add up the cost to convert it, plus your time in labor (however you'd value that), at what point does this bike start paying for itself once you figure the two gallons of gas per tank you're saving?

I feel you shouldn't put so many screws on the battery box cover, considering the large number of cells in there, if you had to remove the battery pack in a jiffy, that is way too many screws to remove.

@JeremyMakesThings Жыл бұрын
It’s not really needed. The temperature rise when charging was pretty minimal as demonstrated. In the box it will be a little bit more, but not significantly. I won’t really be pushing this battery very hard, so air cooling should be fine.
