I needed a stop for my miter saw, so I built a custom one. Did I over do it? Maybe...A bunch of machining, turning, engraving...but it came out pretty darn nice if I say so myself.
And yes, It's a "Miter" saw stop, not a "mitre" saw stop. If it were a "mitre" saw stop, it would be in Millimeters. This one is in inches, so it's clearly for a "Miter" saw.

Great job. It may have been slightly over complicated, but it was a personal project that you shared with all of us. I personally think it is better than just about any that you can buy and it fits the space that you are using rather than being too short or too long.

cool project! press/shrink fits are a real challenge. but so long as it's not a hydraulic piston there's always locktite, taper pins, welding it on, knurling the shaft and pressing it on.

I’ve found it really helps to ream the hole with an undersize reamer, but that only works when you don’t grab the nominal size drill without thinking. 🤦🏻‍♂️

"It might be slightly overcomplicated". Well, I say if anything it's not slightly overcomplicated enough. I say you slap a ballscrew and a motor on there so you can dial in the length with a keypad. I mean I don't know if that would add a whole lot of functionality but it would definitely put to rest any idea of it not being overcomplicated. Anyway, cool project!

Do you have a casting mold for your lead hammer? It would be cool to see you make one of those.
@JeremyMakesThings
@JeremyMakesThings Жыл бұрын
I don’t have one. This is one of the ones that there’s no mold available for, but you can trade in for a fresh one. But….this one came from my grandfathers tools, so recasting it is on the list of things to do, and is (obviously) overdue.

Why engineer when you can over engineer ? My old man always used to tell me “do,it right and and you won’t need to do,it again” Once you get you technique dialled,that stop will be so much faster than before.

How do you like your ER positioning blocks? (Assume you have square and hex). Are the ER32 size?
@JeremyMakesThings
@JeremyMakesThings Жыл бұрын
They’re ER40. I have mixed feelings on them, they’re sometimes difficult to repeat- I have trouble telling when they’re fully seated in the vise, and the nut gets in the way sometimes. On the plus side, the nut acts as a depth stop in the vise, and having a range of sizes each collet will hold is a plus over 5c.
@ironhead65
@ironhead65 Жыл бұрын
@@JeremyMakesThings (to continue a discussion we had on discord) I’m still thinking er32 to get “good enough” Sounds like not that you regret them being er40, but sometimes wish they were off the smaller variety due to the afore mentioned issues

There's a formula for machine screws: 0.060 + N*0.013 So a #0 screw is 60 thou and each successive screw is larger so that it's tensile strength is about double. Works for #00 (N=-1) screws too. IMO, meters and yards are just apples and oranges---both are arbitrary and their adoption is primarily a political process. I always wonder why some people are so excited to talk up a foreign unit system, regardless of the utility of the system and the cost re-tooling. It seems that the more unqualified the proponent, the more aggressive they become. There are obviously good reasons for some shops to have metric tooling but it's hardly a universal solution. Anyway, nice project and nice video.
