This is the kind of game that no one would want to get, but it's still nice to have. If there's such a thing as "Game Boy jank" then this game easily qualifies, but it definitely has something.

@@JeremyParish I hadn't by the time I commented, but I have since then. Great bookends. The problem with watching these in a playlist is that I'm sometimes still typing at the end of the video when KZbin transports me to the next one in the list, so I've started to write comments before finishing the video.

FYI, Fish Dude is basically a more complex and difficult variation of an old Intellivision game called Shark Shark. So it fits the theme of the Game Boy repurposing older games from the early 80s.

There's something subtly horrifying about that cat in a boat. Maybe it's because the cat's head is so big, and the boat is so simple, that they appear to be part of one organism. I really admire your perseverance with this series, by the way. I don't think any video game journalist has tried to make a comprehensive review of *any* system's titles, let alone the sprawling labyrinth that is Game Boy. It's an incredibly ambitious goal, and something that could and should inspire other game writers to break out of the mold of current events and industry-generated hype.
@mackerelphones7 жыл бұрын
There's a guy known as Dr. Sparkle who is making a comprehensive review of the Famicom, Master System, Genesis, and PC Engine. Though on a given game the good doctor doesn't normally go into as much detail as Jeremy Parish. But Dr. Sparkle doesn't do anything with Game Boy, and I don't think he's a journalist. May Jeremy Parish keep up his great work.
@JeremyParish7 жыл бұрын
Dr. Sparkle's work by definition makes him a journalist! That's not his profession, though.

Yeah, I kind of expected someone had attempted it, when I thought of doing something along those lines a few months ago... mainly because I assume everything has been done before, multiple times. And of course, this channel is proof of that. XD But on the other hand, this channel also seems to prove it's not a widespread idea that lots of people have attempted. Go figure.

One of the game's two programmers was also the main programmer of the legendarily awful Famicom game A Week of Garfield - also a Towa Chiki game. But at the very least this game looks more fun than that atrocity...
@JeremyParish7 жыл бұрын
Oh, where did you find staff info?
@CarozQH7 жыл бұрын
The Japanese version lets you enter four-character passcodes (they're listed on GameFAQs), and entering "STAF" , then holding down on the D-Pad while pressing the Start button gives you the staff credits. There are also codes for a secret option screen, and different font and the sound test.
@gdripresents7 жыл бұрын
Specifically it was the sound programmer who also worked on Garfield. It looks like they handed off the sound to the group behind that game. Fish Dude has this string hidden in the ROM: "SALIO & ANex". ANex might be the developer. Salio was just Tecmo. They were located at what was Tecmo's headquarters in the early '80s. SOFEL is still around and involved with RFID stuff.

I like that the boats are driven by cats. A default boat driven by humans is probably the object that kills the most fish in the world as it is, but nope, they have to make it even more stereotypically anti-fish.

Looks like the kind of time waster an ignorant grandparent would have foisted upon their little 'uns. On the collecting front, did a boxed copy just sell from Italy for $80 (w/ shipping) back at the start of November? I see one in a search for sold eBay auctions. If so, that is both a steal and not because at the end of the day you still just have... Fish Dude.
@JeremyParish7 жыл бұрын
Uhhh... how did that not show up on any of my searches? I get a daily update on all international Fish Dude auctions, and that never appeared for me. eBay is just the worst.
@briandecker39947 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was shocked when I saw it. I've never been super pleased with how the different versions of eBay integrate with each other. re: finding people with rare boxes -- You've probably already tried him, but I believe the founder of NintendoAge had a complete US CIB GameBoy set at one point. It's been years since I've visited there with any regularity though, so for all I know that collection's been broken up and sold.
@JeremyParish7 жыл бұрын
Yeah. The fact that that copy sold for less than $100 suggests that there was some kind of listing/promotion mishap - clearly NO ONE saw it. The other Fish Dude CIB auctions I've seen ended at $300-500.

@JeremyParish6 жыл бұрын
What emulator are you referring to?
@KuraIthys5 жыл бұрын
The majority of the content in the video is quite clearly recorded off a Super Gameboy 2 (that's a second revision only sold in Japan. It has some different backgrounds, but mainly it has a link cable port that the original does not.) The Super Gameboy is a cartridge that plugs into a Super NES or Super Famicom that you can then plug a gameboy game into. It's not strictly speaking an emulator, given that it works by virtue of basically containing a gameboy in a SNES cart... If there are any emulators in the footage, I wouldn't know...

I'm learning Japanese and it took me a while to figure out that the last kana is supposed to be ズ. Also, I've never seen a mixing of hiragana and katakana like that. It threw me for a loop. I thought that third kana might be the dash that elongates kana sounds but I knew that it wasn't used for hiragana. The stylized nature of the script didn't help either. Finally, I didn't know うお was another way to say fish. I thought さかな was the only way.

I saw someone asking $999 for the boxed version a few weeks ago at PRGE. The cart goes for about $90. U.S. version, anyway… the Japanese version is fairly cheap.
@Kafei20067 жыл бұрын
It's the U.S. version I have, it was never release anywhere but in North America and Japan, so it's easy to tell, if the game is in English, you know it's not the Japanese version :P.
@littlemissnintendofan65587 жыл бұрын
Funny how if it was never released anywhere else besides US and Japan, how have i owned a UKV Pal CIB version as well as a NOE Pal cart?
@Kafei20067 жыл бұрын
If it was, then I have never seen it and the one I own still is a US version that found its way in Europe by some unlikely combination of events then.
@littlemissnintendofan65587 жыл бұрын
I sold my UKV Pal for £400 a while ago (to someone in the US) and i sold my Noe version for £45. As i have a near full collection for the Game Boy i know all the variants and Kid Dracula was a worldwide release and a good game too!
