What I really miss are the standard ( In - Out - Thru ).. MIDI connections from back in the day.. I have a Baldwin Digital Baby Grand - 1990 with a General Instrument Sound engine. It has the standard MIDI ports. I have just replaced the memory battery. Which was soldered on the main board. I just soldered new wires to it and used an old memory battery holder from a old Motherboard and Voila !! Replaced it with a 2032 lithium batt.. Watching your videos has made me a better player. Thank You!

Great introduction to using a DAW Jeremy. For anyone not familiar with DAW programs (Digital Audio Workstations), Jeremy has at least a couple of other introductory videos. Cakewalk is probably the most popular free DAW, and it is so powerful that quite a few users prefer it to a lot of paid ones. It works only with with Windows (this is a correction to the original posting - sorry) although Windows is rapidly becoming the best and most popular platform to use. If this is new to you follow Jeremy's instructions carefully as Cakewalk is very powerful and if you deviate you might get lost by opening other features before you know enough to use them. This is an advantage of course, as by starting out in this simple approach you can then later explore the program more widely as you become more confident. Exploring is fun as Jeremy demonstrated at the end of this video. [There's a huge number of videos available to take you through learning the more advanced features.]

Dear Jeremy, I jumped at your title even though my Casio is a predecessor, the CTK-2400. It's used of course, but ever so neatly re-packaged. Thus, if my CTK-2400 is not up to this ( it's not for recording purposes but rather the downloading from the net of Classical music midi files, and then the ...slow...learning learning to play these works) then I will resell it. @@JeremySee thank you. I did learn on an old electric organ about 30-40 years ago, when they were popular. Since then I have owned a Roland electric piano, but since donating that to a local school about 7 or 8 years ago, my fingers haven’t tinkled the ivories (except around Christmas time when the shops up town have kids keyboards in then I’ll do a rendition of carols while walking by. Very festive).

Jeremy, Stuart Banks from the UK again, I have received my CTK 3500 and downloaded Bandlab and Cakewalk as instructed. The keyboard and PC connect fine but when I right click on the lhs pane to open a new project, it doesn’t show any instruments there, despite installing them all upon installation. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, but as yet, nothing. Is there anything you can think that I’ve done wrong? Many thanks for your reply, Stu

No, you can't

To clarify, you can but it requires a different cable to record the audio from the keyboard and not the MIDI information it sends through the cable addressed in this video. In doing this however, you would also be limited to playing these effects manually as the only way to use the keyboard effects is to record analog audio.

Thanks for the great tutorial. ....the setup isn't working for me. I have selected my Casio CTK 3500 in Cakewalk input preferences. I have set my keyboard Local to Off. Still pressing the keys on my keyboard does not impact Cakewalk. The graphic keyboard keys don't "play" and there is no sound. I also cannot find any drivers I need to download. I am on a Win10 laptop which does recognize the keyboard. Any help from anyone would be appreciated.

the sequence you do things is VERY important, do not load cakewalk until the MIDI is fully setup first. Once its connected, local off etc, then load your DAW so it can scan and find the instument, dont forget you need to add a virtual instrument on the DAW so the MIDI has somewhere to go to play the notes

61 full-size keys, preferably touch sensitive. The CTK3500 and the Yamaha PSR E363 both have these features for instance, as well as the Casio CT-X700 and CT-S300. Go in a music shop and try them.
