Your lessons have been invaluable. The best I’ve seen on KZbin. I’ve purchased your book and look forward to diving in. Many, many thanks.

A great tip. A simple to apply approach (that will need work) to freshen up ideas . Hunting for a melodic idea all the time is quite difficult. Thanks for the great analysis. Using shapes also sounds like a great idea.

Oh yes, the trio recording of ornithology, Bud was smoking on this date. I've listened to it so much but haven't heard it in years. I've transcribed afew bud solos on trumpet, pretty hard and intense shit. Keep up the good work!
@JeremySiskind3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s a beautiful recording. If I’m remembering correctly; there’s also a live KZbin video of bud playing ornithology a love (but maybe that’s Anthropology. Who can keep these “ologies” separate?)
@thedamndiz23433 жыл бұрын
@@JeremySiskind yes he's playing ornithology, just humming the fuck away!

love this lesson. I’ve always found Bud Powell a little bit difficult to parse, but this really helped. By the way, have you done any videos where you focus on the idea of singing your solo either before, during or in parallel with playing as a way to break muscle-memory driven playing?

you coined the word "mumbly"? so, to make the improv more interesting, use these tips - fascinating! Thanks!

Really good video Jeremy, thank you. I have to admit though that I put off watching it, because I thought the title was referencing the vocal noises that Bud and Keith make when improvising, and that you didn't approve of that like some people do....
@JeremySiskind3 жыл бұрын
Ahahaha, yeah, I make some vocal noises myself, so I wouldn't be one to make a video about that...
@timbruer73183 жыл бұрын
@@JeremySiskind Sure, I was kind of hinting that you might get more views if the title was perhaps a little clearer, but of course that's totally your business :)

Should all phrases be more than an octave? Isn’t better to mix norrow phrases with wider ones to get more variety?
@JeremySiskind3 жыл бұрын
It’s just an exercise. You certainly don’t have to play all of your faces more than an octave in real life, but for students whose improvisations are a little bit more monotone, forcing yourself to get outside of an octave will be a nice counterbalance

Are the mics distorting?
@JeremySiskind Жыл бұрын
Probably! Sorry - recorded this awhile back, but hopefully the sound is better in more recent videos!
@francescomanfredi3 жыл бұрын
Jeremy you know I am your greatest fan, the lesson is top notch as always but the piano sound is distorted, maybe if you use a microphone 🎙 close to your mouth you could keep the general volume in a better range, I see other jazz piano teacher on KZbin like Tony Winston use this technique and it works. Of course you need a mic stand and it’s not so beautiful to see but it’s worth trying :)
@JeremySiskind3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I’ll keep playing around. I have my microphone very close to my mouth at the moment. I guess I need a video on how to fix “mumbly” videos 😂
@francescomanfredi3 жыл бұрын
@@JeremySiskind your videos are great, and I see you are trying your best hiding the microphone for esthetic reasons, but there is no need to hide it, if you watch Tony Winston videos he uses a microphone a few inches from his mouth and Chordie app to show the notes he plays, I think it’s the best setup for teaching, along with maybe a pdf of your notes on google drive for each lesson as also another great channel called jazzmentl does. Anyway you are in the top three of the best!

Good ideas but the scratchy mic sound on piano is not making it.

I’ve meant to mention this before on previous videos. I’m not sure if it’s KZbin that’s messed up the sound especially on the mid to high notes, or if it’s your set up. Have you checked out your own videos on a smartphone to see/hear for yourself?
