Cleaning and managing is important . My vet gave me a water additive and dental treat to control plague. He recommended extracting if the infection didn't improve with the treatment of antibiotics and pain medication.

My first cat lived to be 22 and she never had any dental cleanings or brushing her teeth. It just wasn't heard of back then but our animals lived much longer then as well. High temp cooked pet food has cut their lifespans in half.
@jesscaticles2 ай бұрын
Yes absolutely! There was much more mouse hunting and home cooked meals then.

Good morning! Great video. Sorry Jericho had such a difficult time. But if he needed it, it was worth it. (?). Glad he has recovered. Don’t get me started on the insurance industry, that made record profits in 2023. I have been owned by seven cats in my life. None has ever had any type of dental work. One cat lived to 16, another 15. As with most things, if my cats are not showing any signs of distress, I am going to avoid any medical procedures. Especially after my only experience with Panda. Keep well, Shalom!

Shalom my brother!! Yes, he did very much need dental work and I waited longer than I should have. But I did it finally and it was worth it. The unfortunate thing is that our cats are very good at hiding their pain. So it's difficult to make these decisions. But overall it was worth it and I'm glad it's over finally. Now I just need to keep better care of his teeth moving forward!

@@jesscaticles was this the first time that he’s had dental work and or cleaning?
@jessicas.87762 ай бұрын
My two older cats had dental work done ages ago. It went well. They came home loopy and then were fine. It was expensive though. (honestly I had no idea cats needed dental care until I found a front tooth on the floor and we took one cat in! I felt like the worst caregiver. I learned a lot). We now have two young kittens and they had a respiratory infection early on, and the vet said this is something that makes them more susceptible to plaque and dental issues (I'm probably saying this wrong). And the kittens do have tartar build up already (at the one year check up) and need to get tested to see if they are ok with anesthesia and then get a cleaning. There is no insurance for this that I can find, so I have to save up for it. That's all the info I have.

Interesting, we just went thru dental cleanings with 2 of our cats - age 7 and age 14. They both needed 2 extractions, the 8 yr old needed her fangs removed. The vet we go to is the practice's Dentist and her favorite thing is cat dentals so she sounded like she knew what she was doing. Still worrisome to have cats go under. Our holistic vet that comes to our house for our CKD cat warned us to be careful as dentals can cause long term problems like throwing cats into full blown kidney disease. Our 14 yr old cat with kidney disease will not be having any dentals. Ours didnt get any antibiotics. We were to start pain meds the day after so I gave them slippery elm to prevent any nausea. That worked. I gave them their canned food plus intervals of baby food meats because I thought that would be good on their throats and stomach. Some cats actually get a cough from the tube but ours didnt. We have another dental coming up next week with another 14 yr old. I will remember what you said about the pain meds and see if I really need to give them to her or just if she looks like in pain. Alot of vets, even holistic ones suggest dentals every year or so. I will not be doing that. This was the first dental for our cats and I think the 14yr olds last. And now I do make sure I brush their teeth every day. Your video will be very helpful to people and I hope you do a part 2.
@jesscaticles2 ай бұрын
I definitely will do a part 2! And yes I gave slippery elm to Jericho and it worked great. Love that herb! I'm taking better care of Jericho's teeth moving forward so that he won't need another cleaning. Thanks for sharing your experience (:

My 8-year old cat seemed okay after her cleaning, so I opted to not give her the medication they gave me. But, I wish I had thought of giving her the pro-biotics beforehand - thank you for that tip.

You're welcome! And yes I should have just seen that Jericho was fine and not given the meds. But now I know! My thought was "well I've been trying to do it naturally with no success so might as well follow instructions".
