Speaking of Ford v Ferrari, a (not so) fun fact is it was originally going to star Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt (instead of Bale and Damon) but fell through. Production on it got all the way to a table read, having Cruise and Pitt reading the same final script together. I guess some film executive out there didn't realize what kind of a lottery ticket they were sitting on :/

The Tingler is a weirdly satisfying movie - a really interesting central concept wrapped in a mind-bogglingly goofy package. Part sci-fi, part horror, part unintentional comedy. All credit to Vincent Price for delivering his schlocky lines so convincingly!

Many thanks for your latest potpourri of film reviews. I have never seen "30 Days of Night" but, definitely intend to check it out now. The plot seems to bear some vague similarity to the second half of "From Dusk Till Dawn", "The Thing From Another World "Night of the Living Dead" and probably a number of others but I guess that is not unusual for films of that type. "The Thing From Another World" is my all-time favorite sci-fi film. It's amazing how Howard Hawks managed to do so much with so little, a la Val Lewton. The cast was excellent all around, even including the minor character played by George Fenneman, Groucho Marx's sidekick on "You Bet Your Life" who looked like he was wearing his high school letter sweater. :-) And I love the chemistry between Ken Tobey and Margaret Sheridan. While I have read and enjoyed the novella, I quite agree with you about the John Carpenter remake. I was once, inadvertently, exposed to just a few minutes of it and, much like "The Fly" remake, that was more than enough for me. :-O "Creature From the Black Lagoon" is, to me, the class of the post 1940s Universal Horror. While Richard Carlson was much better in "It Came From Outer Space", everything else really clicked, including Nestor Paiva's wonderfully eccentric portrayal of the Captain of the Rita. The makeup job in "The Werewolf" seems strikingly similar to what was used for Matt Willis in 1943's "The Return of the Vampire" It worked but they were, definitely, not channeling Jack Pierce. James Gleason was a great actor and shone in both large and small parts. Have you ever seen his performance in "Night of the Hunter"? I can't imagine anyone else in that role. It tied the whole film together. Stay well.

I love The Blob, i can watch that a few times a year no problem. Its really rewatchable for me, love the general vibe. The Thing From Another World might be my favorite sci fi movie ever yet I don't own it. I keep hoping for a really special release. I'm also a huge Hawks fan and his fingerprints are all over it, but I'm not convinced of the rumor he actually directed it.

Choking on water during a video where you discuss the Creature from the Black Lagoon is strangely fitting, I'm sure the Creature himself would blurp💦 in approval lol. I find myself wondering what is the polite response, I don't believe it's bless you as its not a sneeze, hmm, I'll say it anyway, bless you Ms Weiselberry lol. I've managed to see all of the movies you've kindly discussed here except for Twenty Plus Two, Murder on the Blackboard and The Werewolf, I've actually wanted to see The Werewolf for the longest time, I'm hoping I'll get to see all three at some point because they sound pretty good and Twenty Plus Two has my brother David Janssen in it so I guess that one is a must, my brother does kinda look like him, on the subject of brothers yours is very thoughtful, the otter teddy he gifted you to remember your experience viewing baby Joey was very sweet. I watched Ford V Ferrari because of the Oscar buzz it was getting and surprisingly liked it quite a lot, also like 30 Days of Night, my sister loves it and she's not really into horror, I think it's Hartnett lol. I love the Creature, The Thing from Another World, The Blob and I like the Tingler, saw that one again recently with Joe Dantes Matinee as a double feature on a channel here, a great selection for an October review. Your reviews are always so enjoyable. ~ Thank you Ms Weiselberry ~

I'll take a "bless you." :) Haha, funny how wanting to see an actor can make you much more willing to watch something you wouldn't be into otherwise. When my classmates back in the day were going gaga over Josh Hartnett, I was probably too busy swooning over some fictional character to take much notice, but I get it now. :) Thank you!

"Romey," I always appreciated the audacity of the concept of The Tingler, the idea that Fear itself could be its own monster, and I'll be interested in your take on it. The same for The Thing, which I greatly respect, and yet I find its tone rather chipper and chatty for a monster movie. Speaking of monsters, I'm a fan of werewolves but always wish they could control their powers better, or at all. The idea that it's a curse of doom is satisfying dramatically but I still wish their powers were more of an option than a burden. Your review of The Werewolf is intriguing, and I wonder if someday you may watch An American Werewolf in London, which is not nearly as gory as it is simply intense. Sorry to have mistaken your otter for a bear the last time -- my sister once owned a Paddington -- but I'm satisfied with the owls you have on the top shelf. I hope you have better luck drinking water, and owl be seeing you.

I read Who Goes There, the story that The Thing was based on,last year in a book with a group of stories that were turned into classic film sci fi..Pretty interesting,with the emphasis on suspence as to Who -was the Thing inhabiting in a group of men hold up in an article station,more like the 80s remake.

By any chance, was the book of short stories titled "They Came from Outer Space"? Because I added that to my list of books to get from the library sometime just a few weeks ago! I read "Who Goes There?" a couple years back. It was more technical and dry than I'd been prepared for, but even in that scientific rationality there was something unnerving.

@@christopherstilley7756 Cool! I've read a couple of the stories included already but I'm going to get the book out of the library sometime to read the rest. I couldn't believe how little "Farewell to the Master" seemed to have in common with The Day the Earth Stood Still, outside of a few main concepts. And I agree about "Who Goes There?" I found it hard to stay engaged in the story, and it wasn't even that long. But it's fun to see how these stories got turned into such iconic films.

As I am stuck in lockdown now, this is a definite gem for me so thank you for the upload :) I do want to watch Ford v Ferrari, I'll get round to it eventually :P Actually watching this triggered my brain and I suddenly thought of a bunch of movie suggestions (creative inspiration strikes whenever : ]). 1st is 'Soylent Green' I'm sure you've either heard of it or now the famous line etc, I haven't actually seen it but it's got a very star studded cast of actors in it and the story is quietly unnerving I think for 1973. 2nd is 'The Way to the Stars' (or 'Johnny in the Clouds' in the US) which is a 1945 WWII war film, but I think the best part of the film comes from the character moments and drama, the war is just the backdrop. Mixture of British & American actors of the times in classy B&W. 3rd is a whole series (which you may or may not have seen I dunno), 'Planet of the Apes' the first one is a piece of classic Sci-Fi history and great make-up effects through out the series (mostly) which span 1968-1973. I do also recommend the reboot franchise that came out from 2011-2017 which is probably better as a story point-of-view. 4th, as a small tribute to recently passed Sean Connery, is 'Outland' from 1981, which is, in effect, a Science fiction spin on the western 'High Noon'. It's one of those forgotten pieces, but I think it holds up. And finally 5th is probably one of my favourite, campy, over-the-top sci-fi films of all time: 'Flash Gordon'. Nuff said. Hope you're doing well, thank you for more recommendations :) P.S. Also don't fret about choking on the water, we all do it XD and 'Toss my Cookies' is a new one on me, I love it and I am putting it into my dictionary haha.

Aw, I'm glad I was able to provide a few minutes of entertainment and distraction for you. :) Good recommendations! I've seen quite a few of them. You should go ahead and watch Soylent Green; it's not a perfect movie but it's got some great stuff in it. I saw The Way to the Stars a few years ago and really enjoyed it. The original Planet of the Apes film is indeed a sci-fi classic (but I've only seen a couple minutes of one of the sequels), and I watched all three movies in the new trilogy. The middle entry sagged a bit, but I was pleasantly surprised how good the first and final films were. And I randomly caught Flash Gordon once on tv many years ago. :) Nice picks!

@@Weiselberry I'll go take a gander at your review for Soylent Green :) Of the original series of films I do like the first one, but I also like the 4th one (Which I think is called Conquest of the Planet of the Apes). One recommendation I forgot to add was 'Underworld' from 2002, it's less of a horror film more an action film with Vampires & Werewolves, I enjoyed it, most of the sequels (& prequel) lose something.

For the record, I don't consider myself as having officially reviewed Soylent Green. I just mentioned it in a couple videos, the other one being my Edward G. Robinson filmography chat. It's Robinson's contribution and the final act that elevate the movie. Too bad you already know the famous line!

Another good review. Only saw two of the movies on the list The Blob and The Thing From Another Planet. Lately I have been watching a few 1950's and 60's B movies, which are bad, but fun. I did recently watch a movie from this year that I recommend called Notzilla. It is a parody of Godzilla. It is one those it is so bad it is good. Some of the humor is a bit sophomoric, but it is still not bad. I also discovered movies from director/writer Christopher R. Mihm. He pays homage to the 1950's B movies. The dialogue is usually bad and the effects are terrible, but again it is so bad it is good. I have seen The Monster of Phantom Lake and The Giant Spider. I will watch his other movies that Amazon Prime has. Just recommendations. Keep up the good work.

Alien and The Thing are both held in high esteem, considered by most to be two of the best horror/sci-fi movies of that era. I think Alien made me feel even more tense than The Thing did, and it gave me nightmares, but for some reason I'd rather rewatch Alien (and I have). I think the difference is that The Thing has that one notorious scene which is shocking and gross, plus a couple other nasty moments. Alien is terrifying and I can't look whenever the xenomorph's onscreen, but it doesn't have an equivalent scene that puts me off. Of course, people who love The Thing love it because of that stuff! So to each his own. Speaking for myself, when we're talking 50s movies vs. their more graphic 80s remakes, my preference is almost always for the older movies.
@robertrodriguez7087
@robertrodriguez7087 4 жыл бұрын
I'm one of those who prefer the '80s *The Thing* and *The Blob,* but I do prefer the '50s *The Fly.* I think people who have a particular interest in special effects (like myself) look at things like gore very differently. I will sometimes even watch a movie that I know isn't going to be good if a make-up effects artist I'm a fan of worked on it, or if it has stop motion creatures in it. In the case of these movies though, they were made by people who were fans of the originals, and to me it showed. But once you get to the remakes from the '90s or later, they're mostly studio products with a bunch of "just do it in post" CGI, which to me leave no reason to watch. Another great video, by the way!
