Jerry Garcia and his first wife Sara a week after their wedding. Recorded by the manager of the Tangent at the time and aired on KFOG's dead hour.

Hahaha so crazy and badass, the dead are so cool, each member coming from such different influences to create such a unique band, it's awesome.

remember when i heard my first copy of this as an inserted filler an the end of a recorded live bootleg.(my copy said 1964 i thought but sounded like this recording) The kind a music that sticks in yer head though still

Why does Jerry look 40 in this photo. He looked older in 1963 then he did in 1969.

@Pantherykitty Jerry was originally a banjo picker and played with David Grisman is varied bluegrass combo's in and around the East Coast and down Outh long before the Dead came into being. In fact, it's from this early folk / bluegrass sojourn with Grisman that Jerry brought him on board to play mandolin, ( he's probably the player on this tape ), on American Beauty. This is assuredly Jerry and Sarah. Jerry was always ready drop everything to go bluegrass pickin' on a moment's notice.

Based on the group Jerry was in at the time, I would say it's David Nelson on mandolin. David, Jerry, and Robert Hunter were the nucleus of the Wildwood Boys.

@ChynaRider they didn't play much together outside of that road-trip (maybe a few guest gigs, though they both dreamed of being Kentucky Colonels).

I read all comments. I've read Phil's book which describes Jerry's playing at this time. I am a solid guitars player and can play pedal steel in Jerry's style. I can play mandolin in Grismans style. I'm not sure but I think it is Jerry on mandolin. I believed he could fiddle in a similar style. Please advise if you really know for sure. I'd have to compare to Grismans chops from his early Dawg recordings with New list city ramblers? But I think he was more advanced than what is here.

It is hard to tell, but I believe what I am hearing here are only 2 instruments. Auto Harp (presumably Sara) and Mandolin. I would bet that it is Jerry on the mandolin. You can hear Jerry fiddling on some rare tracks, and being the fiddle and mandolin share the same tuning and fingering, it would not be far fetched to say that Jerry could do both, after all, he was really a phenomenal, multi-instrumental musician.

My guess is that it is David Nelson on mandolin, not Grisman
@theorist54976 жыл бұрын
Im sure you are correct, as I understand, Jerry didnt meet Dawg unti 1964.

FYI - about all the speculation below: this IS a photo of Jerry and it it IS his voice. That much I know for sure. I don't know if he's playing mandolin or the guitar though.
@Spladamb10 жыл бұрын
pretty sure he's playing mandolin on that one, he played mostly fiddle, banjo, and mandolin back in those days, the Warlock days

Must be a backup musician on mandolin -- there is no banjo on this cut so Garcia must be playing guitar.
