The Alice in Chains unplugged is the best unplugged record out of all of them. I love Nirvana but AIC tops them.

Jerry is such a great guy, taking the time out of his day to talk to that beginning drummer. What a great experience for an aspiring musician! I wish him the best of luck as he embarks on his musical journey.

Jerry is a musical gem. Alice in Chains were so great....I mean, they still are, but AIC with Layne was as good as it gets. They had depth in their music and lyrics that the other grunge bands didn't have. If you put headphones on and listen to their music you can not only hear it, you can feel and see it. Jerry's guitar can range from haunting, erie, soothing, and beautiful.

They make a great point at the end about going unplugged. There needs to be more to the music than distortion and wah-wah pedal.

In my many years of loving and listening to music live, I’ve never heard an album as good as Alice In Chains Unplugged. I really like Metallica, but they don’t carry the humility and depth of character that Alice In Chains embodied when they played. I really like Metallica and they are amazing, but they will also tell you that they are amazing and you better respect that. Alice In Chains was amazing and they always, always, we’re humble about their talent. For me that goes a long ways as a fan of there music. After many years of listening to the same songs and studying the music you come to appreciate where that music came from and how it was written. It adds a whole dimension to the music that just isn’t their when I Listen to Metallica. I think Metallica is technically superior in their musical playing ability, but they miss the depth of feeling that Alice In Chains brought into their music because of their character off the stage. I also think the pain that you feel and experience when you listen to Layne sing is real, and that’s a key ingredient. He also was probably the best singer to ever grace a microphone.

People act shit sometimes, everyone makes mistakes, I hate the way Metallica made fun of Laynes Addiction, but I can imagine, that they all had their own drug problems at that time, that they were ashamed of. Metallica maybe didn't get what Alice in Chains stood for back then, but I think they might have realised it now.

@@ultralyrics1 AIC & Metallica were meant to tour together in 1994 on "The Summer Sh*t Tour", but AIC cancelled & had to be replaced. There's a video on KZbin of Metallica where they start playing "Man In A Box" & they're making gestures about shooting needles in their arms. Poor taste really, especially given Metallica's addiction problems. As @Paul Wingert & @AndDeathForAll82 say above, I'm sure they have regretted it since.

Layne Staley was stoned out of his mind most of the time, and apparently screwed up a lot during that performance, but you'd never know it by the way it was cut to broadcast -- it actually comes off extremely well, one of the better "unplugged" things, and from one of the most Metal bands in the Grunge era. That era didn't last that long, really it came in with force at the beginning of 1992 (Nirvana's "Nevermind" was released in Sept '91) and then Cobain killed himself in April of 1994. Staley left to go watch video games and shoot heroin after 1996, so Cantrell is spot on that this was sort of the end of it. It's funny since the last interviews Cobain gave said pretty much the same thing, that Nirvana was pretty much done after "In Utero", at least in that kind of music. So while a million post-Grunge bands and Nu Metal filled up the rest of the 1990s, Grunge itself only took up a few years, and even there, managed to be tamed by success. It's strange to hear Cobain talk about not wanting to yield to the mass rock star popularity, but at the same time know that he's writing pop songs and not minding at all. Of all of them, really only Pearl Jam seems to have managed to escape unscathed.

People give Layne such shit for his addiction, but he suffered from depression most of his life, predisposed to it from his father. His fiancé died later in 1996 and he never recovered from grieving that loss. Alice in Chains made their last song with Staley "Died" about her passing and the toll it took on him. None of the lyrics he wrote were ever glorifying this, and they were completely real. Just a soul too far gone to come back. That's what makes these songs hit so hard, there's real tragedy through all of them and make them so relatable to people with depression and addiction issues
