If ever a performance warranted a smug grin at the end, then that is it. Awesome.

He probably made that smile cause when he looked up from the guitar he saw that the film crew was just starring in awe.

I saw this in 1987 and to me his performance of the Claw is still one of the most amazing performances on a guitar ever

UK Channel 4 prog Equinox, episode "Twang, Bang, Kerang!" about the electric guitar, 20th Aug 1987. I knew people in blues, metal, pop & rock bands at the time and all everybody was talking about the next day was Jerry Donahue! Astounding technique!

It starts & ends as a cover of Jerry Reed's The Claw with a bendy improv section added in the middle. Don't know Jerry Reed? Ohhh ... SON!

Good lord...I remember watching this when I was 16, still at high school and instantly wanting my first guitar. I already knew of Gerry Donaghue from the Fotheringay album, but back in the day, with no internet, seeing him play was a revelation for me. Thanks for this. Special memories.

I love my _Award Session JD10 Sessionmaster Jerry Donahue signature compact guitar preamp_ (yep - someone should have had a word with them about branding) - the best sounding guitar thing I've ever owned.

watching this at the time put me off playing for years. I could not hope to play as well as these blokes and gave up. I'm playing again in my own style today though.

I missed that! One look says "Go ahead and try to play that.... you'll fail." I know thats probably not what he is really thinking, but its funny to imagine.

16 year old me sitting watching this thinking 🤔 ok I’ll give it 4 weeks to learn this and take it from there...33 year later still trying 🤣
@mytelecasterworld33364 жыл бұрын
same way you watch a very skilled lick and you say to yourself...."oh, god, that'll take months to do that"...and what a surprise that you learn it in less than two hours.....the world of guitar hasn't got any sense at all...it's freakin' weird...by the way, if you try and try and never give up, you can play whatever you will

Who is Backer or is it Bacher?
@garystafford95143 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy, He doesn’t say ‘Backer’. What he actually says is “A cross between some Beck or Jerry Reed”, referring to Jeff Beck, of course.

Good that Jerry cannot use a thumbpick otherwise he may be seriously good...ok just kidding. Mind numbing playing!
@chrismcelrath9098 Жыл бұрын
The funny thing is somewhere around 15 years after this footage, he switched over to thumb pick and played that way from then on. Of course, he's unable to play guitar these days, but the last fifteen-ish years he was playing, he was a thumbpick guy.
