Who cares if it was transposed down a half-time. That still makes that high note a B-natural above middle C. Tell me, can YOU sing that high with such incredible tone and control????????????????

Not covering G? I mean, I also tend to sing like that, but is it correct???

You are correct. He wasn't covering a lot of those notes that should have been covered. Nor did he cover the B-natural!!! WOW!! That is not good. Not sure what he was thinking there.

@@e-bikeskibum7141 that’s why teachers and students gotta use vocal terms: - cord closure, inhalation, cord mass So both the singer and teachers know they are what talking about and then star singers like can be in control of their careers

Sorry, but what a stupid question. Who is there to tell what's right or wrong? Right is what pleases the ears of the listeners. He was a top singer and took the freedom to do it.. That's answer enough. Don't be submissive to vocal teachers of which 90%+ never had a solid career.Theorists.

@@jenspflug7473 It’s an interesting question because different singers make different decisions, particularly in that area of the voice. Singers find it interesting because there are different schools of thought regarding whether covering or not covering are more conducive to vocal health. It is especially salient here because Hadley was declining by the time of this performance and had made obvious changes to his technique a few years prior. Correct or not correct are not simply matters of aesthetics; they are matters of vocal health. The question also matters because people end up emulating famous singers. So if the famous singers do incorrect things, that might actually affect the trajectory of how people tend to sing. They might get used to sounds that they find pleasing, but that are actually dangerous health-wise. This is partly why there are so many differences between how people sound from generation to generation.

@@mrm.5787 That's funny. Caruso asked Puccini NOT to hit the High C in the aria, and great composer allowed him to sing as Caruso wanted.

I am fairly new to opera and love this aria. Could you tell me what was wrong with his performance? I am usually very impressed by Hadley and was fairly so for this performance. Though I can't put my finger on what, I felt it wasn't the best I'd heard. As I said, being new to opera I really don't have the understanding to know what's different or wrong.

@@Rdwrer I am trying to become familiar with the subject as well. From what I am seeing and hearing, it seems, because he has gotten older, that he is trying to cover his voice- in the high and low areas, it sounds nasally and whoofy, especially so on the vowels. There's another video of him singing this piece and it's very good: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGXNY4ttbrNlntE

@@Rdwrer I think it’s fair to say that Hadley’s career went through various phases. From the end of the seventies until the beginning of the nineties, he was guided by Tom LoMonaco (who also helped him through his first vocal crisis, related to TMJ issues). Then, for reasons I’m not familiar with, he started working with other people and there is a noticeable change in vocal production from the mid-nineties. He was singing more uncovered in his top voice (which I think is especially clear in his aa vowels). By the beginning of 2000 his vocal production became more labored, also because of allergies and his personal situation (his divorce). I’ve tried to write it down as objectively as possible because I don’t see a point in discussing the choices of a dead man. Let’s remember him for the joy and pleasure he brought to people’s lives and what he meant for the world of opera, rather than the tragedy of the last of his life.

He’s not trying to be mean. It really is tragic. A little earlier he started studying with David Jones who began to ruin his technique, and his voice began to deteriorate. You can hear how a lot of the notes are either too open or on a very closed throat. He was wonderful in his prime, but the downfall continued until 2003, after which he quit for a number of years. He made a comeback after his vocal rest, but that ended in tragedy.
