After all these years, I'm still affected by Jerry Hadley's untimely death in 2007. I never met Mr. Hadley but I did meet and get to talk with Frederica. and get an autograph. A delightful and talented person.

Heartbreaking to lose Jerry Hadley. He was gifted with a beautiful instrument, his phrasing was impeccable, looked wonderful on stage, could act, move. He was a perfect Pinkerton. He should have had a long and successful career.

Such a wonderful and spine-chilling experience. And the rapport between the two was captivating. I loved it and wished there was more. Miss von Stade's delightful appearance was a joy to behold; her dress and slender figure is much admired. So saddened to hear of Jerry's death. He certainly had a marvellous voice and a great stage presence. I reckon that his gift and usage of it, is second only to the great Mario Lanza. He will be much missed I am sure.

This and "Make Believe" are the two greatest duets in musical theater or operetta. Hadley and von Stade did it flawlessly.

Jerry Hadley sounds more warmed up in this segment of the show, after watching all the other vids on YT, this one is by far the best of his during this entire evening's performance. Glorious high notes, round and full and well-supported. And then of course, there's the fabulous Frederica von Stade - her voice is as glorious as ever!
@hankaustin70915 жыл бұрын
kerryincolumbus you completely nailed it right square on the head! I took your advise and pulled up the other videos with these two from this particular show.. you're so right, Jerry Hadley either didn't warm up beforehand, or was tired or something, because once he gets to this number, his voice is a powerhouse of sound and CLEARLY over-powers F. v.S. sound! Just amazing singing on his part!

Assuming I were in the category of those good enough to sing in public with Miss von Stada in the first place, actually singing with her would make we want to be at the top of my singing game.

One can assume that Barbara H. only knows the days of amplification in popular music. This and Broadway hits through the 50's and 60's required singers who could project their voices - either with techniques like Merman's, or classical like PInza's - both were valid, where appropriate. You will NEVER hear this particular duet song more accurately, faithfully, or musically, than posted - be assured!

It's a duet in the original and this is an excerpt from their full album which is highly authentic. Both are of course - as should be obvious - real opera singers. I've heard both at SF opera. Hadley was a fine Nemorino and von Stade sang many many roles including Cenerentola.

This is Jerry hadley's very best performance. It rivals Mario Lanza 's expertease. I feel that once they get into the truly beautiful dialog together they make something that hasn't been made before! It is a testament to a truly young voice.

They are quite good especially him on the high note at the end. Shouldn't compare her to Kathryn Grayson who brilliantly knocked the song out of the park in Show boat 1951!
@richardmcmahon7466 Жыл бұрын
The 1951 Showboat was pretty poor .Look at the 1936 verion andyou will see what I mean.Apart from that, Grayson was not and never would be as good or even be in the same class as von Stade.
@markwhitman9029 Жыл бұрын
@@richardmcmahon7466 Who the heck is von Stade? And you are crazy to say Kathryn Grayson and especially her singing are not good!!! Do I detect a tin ear?
@markwhitman9029 Жыл бұрын
@@richardmcmahon7466 also Grayson could have done the Met but MGM swiped her up. Some critics did say her coloratura was a bit thin for the Met but her high notes and tone/pitch easily as good as the best in New York

@GeorgeWTush9 жыл бұрын
+Preston Andrews It was just an ignorant comment. They are both two fine American singers who are more than able to sing the repertoire with which they grew up and the classical repertoire they subsequently mastered. And, in any event, suggesting Kern's score for SHOW BOAT is "show tunes" tells the tale. SHOW BOAT has an operetta score. Classically trained singers are required.
@B.H.569 жыл бұрын
GeorgeWTush It was not an ignorant comment, nor am I deaf. If I was deaf, I would not be able to hear any difference. I have been listening to both opera and musicals my whole life (over 50 years). Opera singers are the best at what they do, and the top of the musical ladder, but some of them, when they sing non-opera repertoire, sound too formal and stilted.
@baishihua7 жыл бұрын
Well showboat is almost an operetta, and when it was first performed, all broadway singers were sounded like this.
@1931JC6 жыл бұрын
Barbara just a minority opinion. Not mine but there are many versions to enjoy. No sweat.
