A lot of people must have thought after watching this big "chewing up the scenery" performance that Tom Cruise is just a little crazy, but he's actually a great actor and makes great choices for his characters. He decided Jerry would be this combination of a slick and sharky agent and also this eccentric, unsure, well intentioned guy, and he shifts from the former to the latter over the course of the movie. For the biggest movie star he's surprisingly different in each movie.

"SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!" Fun Fact: The story for this movie was reportedly based on real-life Orange County agent Leigh Steinberg (who makes a cameo in this movie as Troy Aikman's agent, which he was in real life). Steinberg's ex-partner David Dunn tried to lure away many of Steinberg's clients, just as Jay Mohr's Bob Sugar does in this movie. Another Fun Fact: Jonathan Lipnicki showed up on the set one day telling everyone that "the human head weighs eight pounds". Writer, produce and director Cameron Crowe liked it so much he wrote it into the script. Also, Regina King was really pregnant during the filming of this movie.

The film contrasts Rod, a guy with an awesome functional personal life but his career is in trouble and Jerry who was on top of the world but his personal life was awful. Rod provided a blueprint for what Jerry's life could be and Jerry helped show Rod what his professional life could be
@chunkyMunky329
@chunkyMunky329 Жыл бұрын
"Awful" is too strong a word to apply to Jerry especially to his entire personal life. He has a lot of great friendships, and they are part of his personal life. Also, his relationship with his fiance was actually a positive force in his life until he lost the star NFL client. Jerry definitely showed something to Rod, but Rod only advised Jerry to let the girl go if he did not love her. He never gave Jerry a blueprint for how to win her back. Jerry changed because Dorothy showed him what it was like without her and it robbed him from enjoying his new success. She completed him, not Rod.

@chunkyMunky329

@@condorgaming4000 That's not how psychology works. If Jerry's wife was at his house, waiting for him, he would not have had that realization. He would have just continued in his old ways. Its the combination of losing her, and then seeing a reflection of what he has lost that brought him back to her. And so, if he had not seen this with Rod, something else would have brought him to the same realization. His woman started a chain reaction that had inevitability.

1996 was absolutely Tom Cruise at his zenith. He was only 34, in his physical prime and had two major box office hits in Mission Impossible...which became his signature franchise, and Jerry Maguire which was one of the most quoted movies of the 1990's and earned him an Oscar nod. Very few actors have had a year as good as Tom Cruise had in 1996.

25 years after first seeing Jerry Maguire it is still one of my favourite Rom-Coms of all time. Set in the Football world is what peaked my interest, but the incredible acting and writing made me love this movie.

The fiancee was played by Kelly Preston. She was married to John Travolta for many years but passed away in 2020. She had a small role in Christine near the start. She was the cheerleader that had the hots for Dennis, Arnie's cool (only) friend. Edit-had to get the facts right.

My favorite romcom and yeah, mid-nineties Tom is 🤌🏼😍🔥. The pacing feels fast, the first time you watch it, but it shows Rod playing games over the course of the season in between their love story so you can get a feel of timeframes. Check Tom out in Cocktail it’s another fun love story.

@@nsasupporter7557 Yeah but THE REF is literally underrated. It was not even close to a box office hit, and no one thinks to put it in a Top 10, let alone Top 20 list of best Christmas movies. So you're unfortunately very wrong here. THE REF **is** underrated. You're crying over an incorrect assertion.

@@nsasupporter7557 But if it's true, it's true. You have to say what's true and then others can react accordingly. The movie, Clay Pigeons is an underrated movie and when describing it those are the first words out of my mouth. It's one of my favorite action/suspense movies with an all star cast and an great plot, great ending. Acting, directing and photography are excellent, and yet no one's ever heard of it. What phrase describes that better?

And I just love the fact that Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains has a cameo as the Copy-shop guy. EDIT: As the replies demonstrate a reaction to "Singles" would be great....that one seems like it would be right up your alley, a great cast and great music. While this genre of film really seems right up her alley, I think the issue is just the age of the film and how old Cassie is. I saw it in college, but this film is 26 years old. If she wasn't even a teenager when it came out, she probably wouldn't have seen it in the theater and may just never have gotten around to watching older movies.

This is such a great movie. I'm not the biggest Tom Cruise fan (I like the movies, but he can be a bit off putting in some movies) ... in my opinion this is his best movie in terms of acting. He doesn't get to fall back on some crazy stunt or action sequence. This is pure dialogue and character progression and he nails it. There are times when the movie goes from 0 to 60 in the emotional department, but it also plays into their personalities. Fantastic movie pick.
