Jerry...when I was a freshman at NMU, I didn't respect the power of the lake when I first got there. I was out by the light house with some friends, drinking, watching a storm approach. It got to us much faster than we thought. By the time we made it back to the concrete breakwater, tge waves were breaking about 10 ft. I was maybe half way back to shore when a wave knocked me down and dragged me back toward the lake side. I lost most of my finger nails trying to dig into the concrete and managed to stop partially hanging into the water on the lower ledge. I hustled up and never ran so fast in my life - completely sobered up! Never ever made that mistake again. The closest I ever got was your vantage point for this video. Great lesson you've shared - should be required viewing for all incoming freshman in Marquette!

texas frog Amen to having this video required for students , but lets not limit the audience to any specific age , the earlier one learns the more the information is DEFINED and Permanent!

I’ve had a couple different experiences learning to respect these lakes but none nearly as intense as this. I have walked that pier and to think of having to get over all those boulders before reaching the cement, and then all that way from there gives me chills.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm glad you didn't witness a death while you were out there. Thanks for chewing the kid out too!!! I hope they, and others heed your wisdom in the future.

I had to yell at people a couple years ago. Some young kids almost got swept away. Do you still go to PIP?

So did people die trying to save him or was that a different incident?

About 20 minutes after this a couple was washed of the rocks and perished. They just found one body a few days ago. The women's body is still missing.

It was rare i was visiting during this storm and it was the most significant Weather related event i have ever witnessed. Marquette' s equivalent to an Earthquake. Experienced a tremor in California 1983 & it was a wake up call to Earth's Power🌎🌍🌲🌲🎼🎼🚴

I grew up in Marquette and remember at age 4 pulling my kid size oak chair to the window to observe the current Thunderstorm. My Mom, Barb Rydholm, quickly removed me from my spot , warning me of the danger involved I Still Love Thunderstorms! They are a reminder of who exactly is in charge on our Planet and it is not Us, that is for sure ! Nature Rules! 🌎🌲🎼🎼🎼🚴🎶

He was lucky not to be pulled out by the undertow aka peptide. Good luck to you and him. God bless.

None of you should have been out there that day as the Island was CLOSED because of the severity of the storm. Great video with lots of views, but did YOU have permission to cross the barrier stopping people from going out there due to the unsafe conditions?? If not, Jerry, you should be 'chewed out' for being there too! In addition to the danger of the waves is the possibility of falling trees and erosion of the road and paths. All of the people who were on the Island that day should all be heavily fined (for trespassing, disregarding police orders or something)! Help pay for the police and emergency workers when they have to risk their lives and go out there to help those who find themselves in trouble. Just like you, I am sure those two people didn't ever think they would get in trouble or die that day!
