Jj without screens cannot get a shot off and rarely can create his own shot. You put him back at a time without a three point shot he probably would score maybe 6 pts a game if he were lucky. Bob Cousy 18-21 ppg for 10 years when there was no three-point line, and led the league in assists for 8 years in a row. While his field goal percentage may seem lackluster by today's standards, he was average for most of his career, but as mentioned it wasn't his role. The guys he played against like Robertson, Russell, Chamberlain, West and Baylor set records that either were not broken for decades, or remain unbroken by the supposedly superior skills of the modern NBA. Now we could talk about how you couldn't palm the ball or travel back then, so FG% was lower, or how Cousy was an innovator in ball handling, or how Cousy would have had different training had he been born in the 00s and not in the 20s, but the game will always be changing. Cousy's most enduring legacy is the fact that he helped found the player's union. He was one of the only people to be making a decent living in the NBA at the time and he used his power as an all-star to give a hand to his fellow players, and all future players. Not to rub it in too much because I don't think Redick thinks he's the best player ever, but Cousy has an NCAA championship, 6 NBA championships, one MVP, 13 All Star appearances, 2 All Star MVPs, 8 assist leaders, and a retired NBA jersey number, and Redick has 0.

@Greg definitely sounds like it could be jealously but he's not 100% wrong. Playing a sport where even bench players who don't touch the court players make more money then most people on this earth is a blessing and can even be seen as ridiculous to people unaware of it lol. Can't really compare that to the every day struggle most go through. Sports do bring alot of money that hopefully goes back into the city via taxes. Also for other dude I get your point but the context of the original comment is just stating those players are necessary for a basketball team/ society to function well same way society needs people to fulfill these roles that aren't necessarily in the spotlight therefore you won't get recognition but nonetheless you are doing something important to life.

I saw Cousy at the tail end of his career. Watched Chamberlain and Russell go at it many times. Saw Jerry West simply make others look slow. Had Oscar Robertson teach me how to shoot a jumper the right way at a basketball camp. I've watched the NBA since I was about four years-old. Who the hell is JJ Redick and why does anyone care? In ten years, nobody is going to remember his name but they'll still remember the names of the greats that I listed. Jerry West, Bob Cousy and Oscar Robertson just to name a few would have wiped the floor with him. As for the firemen and plumbers comment. Not one starter on an NBA team of that era had another job, not a one. A few and I sincerely mean a few benchwarmers who sat way down at the end of the bench had second jobs back then. If not for those guys in the 50's and 60's as well as Magic, Bird and Jordan, none of these guys today would be making the money they do. Look I love Shaq. He was one of the greatest big men ever and he's done great things after his career ended but Wilt at 40+ years-old would have dominated him just as he dominated Nate Thurmond and Bill Russell when he set his mind to it. There was no athlete stronger than Wilt and still isn't today. Bill Russell was my hero growing up and still is and not just for basketball but the fact is, he could barely contain Wilt. Wilt was a colossus. He was the best overall athlete on the planet when he was 17 years-old. He could have set records in the decathlon, weightlifting and a lot more sports if he'd wanted to. This is a guy who at 7'1" conservatively ran the 40 yard dash in 4.4 seconds. He could bench 550 lbs. In the '61-'62 season, Wilt averaged 48.5 minutes a game. Even Jordan couldn't come close to the abilities that Wilt had. Thing is though, nobody ever talks about Wilt as the GOAT and the reason for it is that he was in a league of his own. Wilt still owns 72 NBA records and he's the sole owner of 68 of them. JJ Redick would have been hard-pressed to make an all-star team back then...

Now see you had me until the shaq stuff. 40 year old was still a specimen trust me I have read, and watched all interviews and book excerpts. There is no way wilt at 40 dominate shaq no sir. Wilt never played a guy at his position that was 7'1 290 or 300 pounds running and jumping and sheer strength to match him(wilt). Shaq in his prime would get off on wilt at 40. Now prime for prime very much a different story. And lastly I gotta point out how a young Kareem gave wilt them buckets almost a 40 piece and double digit boards sir. That was a Kareem who never weighed what shaq or wilt was. Kareem at max would check in at 240 or 245. That's it. We gotta stop trying to shit on shaq and saying dumb stuff. Shaq had more skills than people would to remember and that also goes for wilt as well. Most ppl like to think Shaq and Wilt only dunked and that's totally false. Excellent point! The older game was about a dominant big man and forcing the ball inside offensively and packing it in defensively. That gave way to a more balanced game in the 80s and 90s to nowadays where how many guys in total play with their back to the basket on the block? I remember when Charles Barkley went over to Houston in the late 90s and he and Hakeem would race to see who would set up shop on that left block. Nowadays it's vacant...

Completely agree. Players today learned from players in the past, benefit from different rules, more modern equipment, and more advanced training methods. Add on top of that the incentive to play all day every day because of what past players did to constantly get the salaries for players to go up and up. Greatness will always be judged based on the era.

People act like fewer teams made it less competitive. The 1950 draft (Bob Cousy, taken 4th overall) included 121 college graduates drafted. Fighting for a spot on one of the 12 (not 8) teams. The 2006 Draft (J.J. Redick, taken 11th overall) included 60 people. Fighting for a spot on one of the 30 teams. 2006 had fewer drafted players (with a lower education level) fighting for more NBA roster spots. Leading to more watered down league. And the plumbers and firemen comment proves they are also harder working than you. The fact that your kind did not have to work McDonalds in your spare time to pay the bills is a direct result of the success the league has become because of the pillars it was built on.

They'd have the same training and diet regimen, they'd have shoes with ankle support, they'd have all of that. They've actually done research on this very topic, having Usian Bolt run in the same type of sneakers as Jesse Owens. It was discovered that without his new age kicks, he couldn't hit the same speed he could today and his best time hovered around Owens best time. If players today were playing with a ball from the 60s, on 60s hoops and wearing 60s shoes, I can pretty much guarantee you'd see a major dip in their quality of play.

Is it really the players or is it this social media generation who takes things out of context? It came off very disrespectful but at the same time he was at ESPN First Take, a shitty ass program where analist go at eachother with overdramaticized takes because they're ordered to, I don't think he truly meant to shit on that era or anything like that, he was firing back at Russo because he would take Cousey over CP3(his teammate). He wasn't entirely wrong either about the competition at that time. I mean Wilt even scored a 100 points.. now all of a sudden Jerry West comes out saying he disrespects people who laid the foundation, but it was just a comment made to show why he thinks CP3 should be above Cousey. All taken out of context by Jerry. Although JJ could have said it better, which he usually would, but yeah.. First Take.

@@Afr0Thund3r it IS being taken out of context. Jerry wants to join in saying he disrespects the people who laid the foundation, but what JJ said wasn't entirely wrong. Players in this day and age have access to and knowledge about better diets, tech, facilities, training regiments, skill, athletes are so more advanced right now than they used to be, so a comparison between Cousey and CP3 is a non debate to begin with. He could have, no he should have been more respectful about Cousey but Russo was trippin with that take and you just hate the fact that its a mid player like JJ who said it, but just because its him doesn't change anything. Cousey did a lot for the NBA and yes 6 rings is a massive accomplishment but drop a 50-60 year difference in sports evolution CP3 in that era and let him play against people who had a full time job with basketball on the side and watch what happens. Thats the point JJ is trying to make.

@@Djordjevicc "That's the point JJ is trying to make", and this is why JJ is a fucking clown, CP3 would drive past Cousy right into BILL RUSSELL! IS THAT THE POINT HE'S TRYING TO MAKE, THAT CP3 WOULD SCORE ON BILL?! Because that's even MORE ridiculous than saying Bob Cousy doesn't get credit because of who he played against, like he never played against Wilt. People who bring up individual stats like they matter are fucking annoying. Enough out of you CLOWNS, holy shit. "Let him play against people who had a full time job with basketball on the side and watch what happens", yea, he still loses because he's a 6'0 point guard who needs teammates to pass to. It's a TEAM game. Friendly reminder that Bob Cousy actually plays defense by the way, so Chris would be harassed the entire game and if he actually manages to get past his matchup, he's gotta deal with 6'10 Bill Russell. Chris Paul shoots .369, so you tell me, would it be better to just try and jack up 3's that Cousy will not let happen unmolested, or should he just dribble past this "plumber" because Bill Russell is easier to score on than Bob Cousy? The point YOU and JJ Redick is trying to make is so nonsensical and shows exactly the ego issue the league has nowadays, the audacity to discredit Bob Cousy while talking about a player with 2 Finals appearances, while you were a player that averaged less than 5 points a quarter? Hilarious, by the way, Chris Paul's .369 3P% I mentioned automatically disappears in Bob Cousy's era, the thought of CP3 playing in that era is actually hilarious and there is no need to shit on players who were underpaid and overworked while bums like JJ Redick got overpaid to average under 15PPG his entire career.

@Boulderbruh323 Basketball had been around for a while. The NBA took some time to integrate all races from 1950-1960 they were little by little becoming a league of the best players in the world. Before that from 1930-1950 there were separate leagues but they played world championships. By the late 50's and especially in the 1960's there were many good players. Not many teams so the players were the best in the world. So if this argument is about the people guarding them, J.J. Redick should never utter a word, because by my estimation he is the worst defender of all time. I have never seen such a bad defender and at least back then people had some defense. J.J. Redick had the worst defense of all time.
@Afr0Thund3r

@Boulderbruh323 The craziest thing about comments like that, guarding your man is probably the only thing you can do if you're not good on the offensive side. Jason Kidd and Bob Cousy played defense, but the people guarding them definitely thought "Well, shit, if I can't score, the LEAST I can do is make sure this motherfucker can't either", and that mentality is severely lacking in today's game. JJ Redick averaged less than 15PPG and shot above .400 from the perimeter, let's not pretend that his defense warranted such poor offensive performance, we're just in an era where expectations are different. People SHOULD demand defense from players like JJ Redick, but they'd rather just blame the coach while I watch another 100+ point game. There are definitely fans who heard "JJ Redick is getting traded" and thought "THANK GOD" lmao

My top 10 60s players 10. Walt Bellamy: while overshadowed by the other great big men of the 1960s, Bellamy started off his career with one of the most dominant rookie seasons ever in 1961-1962 and earned four straight All-Star selections with averages of 23+ points and 15+ rebounds per game for the decade. 9. Jerry Lucas: one of the greatest rebounders in NBA history, Lucas was Rookie of the Year in 1963-1964 and went on to earn six straight All-Star and five consecutive All-NBA selections in the 1960s on the strength of averaging 19+ points and 19+ rebounds per game. 8. Sam Jones: second only to his teammate Bill Russell in terms of career NBA titles, Jones played his entire career with the Boston Celtics and was not only a 5x All-Star and 3x All-NBA player who averaged 19+ points and 5+ rebounds per game in the 1960s, but perhaps was best-known for coming through in the clutch in the playoffs, winning nine of his 10 championships during the decade. 7. Hal Greer: a 9x All-Star and 7x All-NBA selection in the 1960s, Greer was a dynamic all-around player who posted averages of 21+ points, 5+ rebounds, and 4+ assists per game for the decade while helping lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a title in 1966-1967. 6. Bob Pettit: one of the league’s first superstars, Pettit earned All-Star and All-NBA honors every season of his career (6x in the 1960s up to his retirement) with averages of 27+ points and 16+ rebounds per game for the decade. 5. Jerry West: immortalized as the silhouette of the NBA’s logo, West was an All-Star every year of the decade he played (9x) and All-NBA 8x on 27+ points, 6+ rebounds, and 5+ assists per game, and remains the only player in league history to win Finals MVP in a losing effort. 4. Elgin Baylor: a 9x All-Star and All-NBA selection during the 1960s, Baylor was one of the most dominant players of the decade, averaging 28+ points, 13+ rebounds, and 4+ assists for the decade; at the same time, however, his Los Angeles Lakers lost each of their NBA Finals matchups vs. the rival Celtics. 3. Oscar Robertson: the first player to average a triple-double over a full season, Robertson was a dynamic playmaker who led the league in assists 6x and actually averaged a triple-double over his first five NBA seasons (29+ points, 8+ rebounds, and 10+ assists per game for the 1960s); during the decade, he started off as Rookie of the Year and was also a 9x All-Star/All-NBA selection who won the 1963-1964 MVP award. 2. Bill Russell: the lynchpin of nine championship Celtics teams in the 1960s, Russell was an annual All-Star and All-NBA player until his retirement in 1969 - with averages of 14+ points and 22+ rebounds per game, he led the league in rebounding twice and won four MVP titles for the decade. 1. Wilt Chamberlain: famous for his record 100-point game and his rivalry with Russell, Chamberlain was a man among boys during his time, averaging an incredible 34+ points (7x scoring champion) and 24+ rebounds per game (8x rebounding champion) for the decade - his accolades during the 1960s include Rookie of the Year, All-Star and All-NBA selections every year, and four MVP awards Without these players there wouldn't be no Micheal jordan,magic johnson, kobe bryant, or lebron james because who would inspire their idles? Jerry West( The NBA Logo) averaged 27 PPG and Bob Cousey averaged 18.4 PPG without a 3 point line. J.J. Reddick averaged 12.8 PPG and was never an allstar while West and Cousey were perenial allstars. J.J. should check the stats of the Plumbers before making his comments.🔥🏀⭐🏆

It’s such a myth that the players now are faster and more athletic. Just go and watch a game from the 80s…..it actually takes me a few minutes to get my bearings and get used to the pace of the games compared to the modern game. They flew up and down the court

People in 2060 or 2070 will see Lebron or MJ played against plumbers and fireman too.... Maybe in that era there re no more 6'0-6'4 PG.. maybed in 2060's The shortest PG is 6'6 or 6'7... Then they would said, look Lebron or MJ just played against a bunch of kids... Every era has its own advantage and disadvantage

This is why any all time great player can play in any era no matter the circumstances. That arguement won't be made to lebron or jordan. Most people still have jordan dominating this era. The same thing will be said for lebron 20 years later

@@Djordjevicc Would JJ Redick have a 2nd job if he was getting paid 40k a year ?
@Djordjevicc
@Djordjevicc Жыл бұрын
@@NothingElseMattersJM he absolutely would, but that's not the point. He's comparing the two era's because Russo thinks Cousey is better than CP3. If JJ played in that era as the player he is/was in this era he would light it up. If those players back then played with the knowledge, diets, training regiments we have now they could dominate too. But what he said is not wrong, albeit a little disrespectful the way he delivered it.

Bill Russell would be the GOAT in any era. Kareem convinced me of that. The mental discipline that let him win 11 rings would still be there. I don't think there's any other athlete in any other era that was so completely dominant. More interesting questions. 1.) 22-year-old Paul Robeson taking Rob Gronkowski's place on the Brady-era Patriots. 2.) Prime 5'10" Mike Tyson against 6'10" Tyson Fury. 3.) Larry Bird in the 3-point contest against Steph Curry. 4.) Babe Ruth in a non-segregated league. 5.) Dave Schultz and the 1970s Philadelphia Flyers in a street fight against Charles Oakley, Rick Mahon and Nikola Jokic's brothers, weapons being equal.

@@stanleyrogouski No, that's the point of taking a step back and understanding variables without speaking in absolutes. Ali beat Foreman, Foreman beat Frazier, Frazier beat Ali. Who's better than who? No definitive way to actually answer that question and there NEVER will be. Ali beat Foreman by shelling up on the ropes, Foreman beat Frazier by keeping him out with his reach, and Frazier beat Ali by weaving and using the shotgun that was his left hook. If you're actually a sports fan, you should really watch all those boxers I just named go through their respective bouts, they were prizefighters and did not reach fame by knocking bums over. A true boxing fan will hear "Prime Mike Tyson vs Prime Tyson Fury" and respond "Do you really think Tyson Fury could beat Buster Douglas?", and if you don't know who Buster Douglas is, this is why I make a distinction between a fan of a sport and a spectator. A boxing fanatic wouldn't disrespect Mike by putting him in the same sentence with Tyson Fury, a TRUE basketball fanatic wouldn't disrespect Bob Cousy by putting him in the same sentence as CP3, a guy who's only made 2 finals appearances. Keep in mind, basketball's a team sport and boxing isn't, but both sports have spectators who think they're fans. (Buster Douglas was the first guy to knock out Mike Tyson, go watch the fight, really, you won't regret it)

The NBA game has evolved, I started watching the NBA back in the 70s when there was no 3 point shot, and when players were given 3 chances to make 2 free throws. Back in the 70s, the biggest plays were to dump the ball down low to the center, and if he was doubled teamed the center would kick it out to a guard or forward for an easy 10 to 15 foot shot. There weren't a lot of shots from 20 or more feet back then, but there were a few guards who could shoot from 20 feet and beyond with accuracy. Now you have a lot of guys that can shoot from 25 feet or more more with great frequency and accuracy, making the center position less dominant than it was back in the 70s and 80s. The game is much faster paced today, and much more free flowing action, because guards have to extend their defense out further because of the 3 point shot, it allows offenses to get more open shots with the screens and constant ball movement.
