All the Sights that People Miss at The Wave
I was trying to think of a good title for this that would make people watch, but I just can't do those click bait-ey titles. But people go to the Wave and they only visit The Wave. More and more, people are going up to Melody Arch and the Alcove, which are incredible. Melody Arch is actually my favorite spot in Coyote Buttes North. Even moreso than the Wave. But here's the thing; it is HARD to get a permit to Coyote Buttes North. So if you get one, you should get the full experience. The Wave is considered a Bucket List hike and it lives up to those expectations. But if you combine all of the other features around the Wave, it's even more incredible. And it's easy to visit all these places in a single day.
So when we unexpectedly won permits recently, I decided I wanted to see all of those spots I didn't know about before. I'll let the video show them to you, but here they are, listed in order with GPS coordinates (*may not be exact. Double check online and on Google Earth):
The Wave 36.99591,-112.00633
Ginger Rock 36.99745, -112.00548
Big Mac/Hamburger Rock 36.98954, -112.00195
Melody Arch/The Grotto 36.99103, -112.00555
The Alcove 36.99201, -112.00577
Top Rock Arch 36.99366, -112.0051 Access has some exposure and may deter some people
Sand Cove 36.99249, -112.0113
The Boneyard 36.99552, -112.01308
Dino Tracks 36.99925, -112.00988
High Heel Arch 37.01036, -112.01648 This area is difficult to find and not exactly a fun hike. There are a few other arches in the area, but we did not have time to visit them all. We had wayfinding difficulties so I do not want to put details here on how to get there. I don't want to send people in the wrong directions. Explore this only if you are experienced with wayfinding and off trail hiking.
Even with all of this, we didn't see everything there is to offer. So if you're lucky enough to get permits, plan a full day and explore the area. There is so much to see.
Also, I promise I'll stop getting Wave permits for a while and give you all a chance. I have no idea how we've been so lucky. For this one, I was bummed about my shoulder surgery and applied out of the blue for the online lottery because I wanted something positive to look forward to...and I won. So if you're struggling with getting permits, just keep trying. And if you don't win, there are a lot of amazing places in that area you can still explore like White Pocket, Wire Pass/Buckskin Gulch, Coyote Buttes South and much more.

I took the five-year-old and eight-year-old out today for a hike/run with their backpacks on telling them we need to train for 6 to 8 miles. Got home and my daughter was trying to prank me and said that a new Jerry Arizona video was out, and I said, “No, it doesn’t come out until tomorrow, and when it does I’m going to hide from y’all so I can watch it.” An hour later this video actually did come out, and I told them that the Wave and other Arizona/Utah/Appalachia/Central New York hikes are what we were training for, and specifically when I took them out today, it was the Wave that I was envisioning as our family goal. My kid was horrified and thought rocks were harmed in the making of the video. It looked so incredibly real. After nearly 10 kid interruptions in the first 90 seconds of the video I gave up and gave them the remote control for the TV and went to hide in the car with the iPad so I could finally watch this video. No matter how many times I watch other channels for the same locations to get different points of view, a variety of information, and planning tips, the other channels never do the natural environment justice like your videos do, Jerry. It’s not just the cinematography that you’re able to capture with the lighting, the framing and all the details that pull together beautifully from the editing. You’re revealing the soul of a place. These are the only videos that I’ve seen that exude an honest reverence for these magical, fragile and unique formations. Thanks for producing them, for sharing the journey with us; and for all of the many hours you spend editing, planning, and everything else your family and friends do as a team to make these experiences possible for the rest of us to tag along on. It’s a major commitment to cover all the aspects needed for the trips to happen like they do, and for the videos be produced. I bet Tina is putting in the hours too, making it possible for you to get that editing done. Cannot believe how many times y’all have hit the Wave lottery… 🍀 ✨ Y’all stay safe, healthy and healing.

That's awesome! Thank you! I hope you all get to see this place because it is absolutely amazing. You just feel privileged to be able to be there when you're actually there. I hope you all get to visit and I swear I'll quit applying so you have a better chance. This one was pure luck and unexpected. And I wanted an organic effect to give the location names so people could plan better, but once I saw how well it turned out, I knew I had to make it clear that it was just graphics and not actually written on there. If you go, don't just go to the wave. Make it a full day and visit as many locations as you can because it is absolutely stunning.

A fantastic scenery, often filmed but not in that perfect way like Jerry´s. I´ve visited that wonder landscape three times in the eighties. Nobody in Kanab could or would tell the German visitor the way. A ranger laughed and said: "You´ll never find it!" But I worked it out. Without any permit!

Jerry - just returned from the Page AZ area. Thank you so much for your review of the Utah Toadstools and Buckskin Gulch from Wire Pass trailhead. Both were 10/10. Couldn’t win the lottery for a Wave pass, but did enjoy the “The New Wave” off highway 89 at the Az / Utah border. A free, easy, Poor Man’s Wave. And as for Antelope Canyon - fantastic. Not nearly as Disney-like as I feared. One of the best things I’ve ever seen.

I love that every time you come back you show us something we have not seen before or a different dimension to the whole thing.

That area that you called ginger rock or didn't have the exact name of is often referred to as Neon Buttes and sometimes as the "mini wave "by most of the guides I know out in Kanab. It's a shame that you missed the sauropodomorph type tracks on the way in. I have visited many fossil trackways in the area and that particular set is one of my favorite. I hope you all get to see them on your next time out there! I've been out to the Wave/Coyotte Buttes many times, but I've never been to high heel arch, so I will try to find that the next time I am able to get out there.

There was another arch out there that I really wanted to see but we got off track and didn't have enough time. I think it's outside the permit area though. There's a good write up online (can't recall where but I just searched the wave and kept reading) that gives info on it and a couple others. That's where I got the ginger rock name. I like Neon Buttes better.

...and to sum up my comment, as always the videoing and editing are a 10 out of 10. Getting the writing on the walls... just unreal! Took me hours to simply duplicate your intro of getting the video to show up behind a see through title. Problem is... now you need to remember how to do it if you want to use it again :) . Music overlay is just so good. Sounds are just so good. I'm still kind of boycotting Wave permits only because of the money grab from Booze Allen. On the _very_ conservative side I estimate that they clear $300,000/year just from people _not_ winning and getting to enjoy the public land. On top of that, they are running a lottery _in_ Utah (something that is 100% illegal). I'm all for paying for permits but that is just fleecing people. Since you brought it up, I'll ask... do you really see the need to limit the number of people in The Wave or do you think it could/should be increase (even further)? You know... since you've been there so often :) .
@JerryArizona
@JerryArizona 5 ай бұрын
Firstly, I'll stop playing the Wave lottery for a while so everybody else has a chance :) I didn't even really expect this one. Just applied because I was bummed about the shoulder and won out of the blue. I agree completely about BA, but you can't hardly go anywhere without going through them anymore. I know there is some cost for website upkeep, but I can't imagine they aren't fleecing people at $9/person. Man, the effects on this vid were difficult. Each one took probably 3 hours to render and most had to be done multiple times to make it work. But I love the end result. As for foot traffic, it's my understanding that they did a study about foot traffic vs the sandstone to determine the number. You can definitely smooth it out with too much traffic as I'm sure you've seen in some other, non-regulated areas. But that was back when they allowed 20 people per day, so not sure how they arrived at 64. The area is also pretty small (at least the wave itself) and part of the idea was to limit people so when you go you have somewhat of a wilderness feel instead of something like Devil's Bridge in Sedona where you stand in line for an hour for a picture. Honestly, after our first trip I would have been happy to never go again if they'd have kept it at 20 people/day. But if you ever go, I definitely recommend hitting the wave first thing in the morning and then seeing the other sites to avoid the crowds. Maybe slip over again from the 2nd Wave for better lighting and then go down the 'slot canyon' to Sand Cove, boneyard, dino tracks and out. We definitely felt like we had the place to ourselves, even though there were 62 other people out there.
@ToddCopeland
@ToddCopeland 5 ай бұрын
@@JerryArizona don't get me wrong.. if you get a permit... go! No issues from me applying and winning. While I don't disagree with a limit and know coming up with a solution is difficult.. there are probably many ways to better handle the local lottery. I'll name two. There could be a cool down period when you win. If someone won in your party, they cannot go again for xxx amount of time. The other is to _stop_ the stupid 3 days it now requires you be in the area to hike it. Win on Friday, you show up on Saturday to watch the video and then also hike on Saturday if you want. If everyone shows up early to go out early then they were going to go out early already. Nothing changes there. Now people can enter and hike it within a weekend. The deal with BA fleeces the public. Truth is, BLM could have set everything up themselves. The difference is, they would need to have come up with cash up front and I'm sure BA sold them on... you don't need to do anything but sit back and bask in the money we send you. But again, all of that additional expense is now pay by people to use public land and a _lot_ of it goes to a private company (millions every year). But I'm off to come up with my own lottery to run in Utah... you know... since it appears the state will look the other way. On the editing the words, from what I can see it's either using Overlay or "Color Dodge" and turning down the gain. You set the bar high my friend... now I'm going to need to figure it all out :) . In the meantime, hitting Keyhole Canyon and Pine Creek next week. Though, I will avoid the rain.

I agree 100%. I'm seriously not applying for a long time. Won the first time because we hadn't seen it and we tried forever. Second time just out of luck when Tina's friend was in the area with us. Then I tried so I could see if I could get a permit for Clint to check it out. This time.....I only applied out of frustration from the shoulder thing. Winning that time was probably too much. A cool down period is a good idea. And the 2 days in advance (or is it 3 now?) is stupid. Very limiting for people who want to try the in person. If you're in the area and traveled a long way, you should be able to try every day you're there because most people can't just drive half a day and get there like we can. I loved it when it was through the BLM. The in person lottery was actually fun even. Definitely don't need to line BA's pockets, but I guess it is what it is at this point. Hope you get to go.

Got there super early for the wave. People started showing up around the time we were up top. Of course I've gone in at 3AM and ran into people, so you never know. Most people didn't stray far from the wave itself also.

How many miles total did you put in that day?

GPS says it was around 9 miles. Probably 1~1.5 was for the arch at the end.

do you need a permit coming in the way you did?
@JerryArizona
@JerryArizona 5 ай бұрын
You do. They go up monthly (3 or 4 months in advance) online or 2 or 3 days (not sure nowadays since they keep changing it) in person. I believe the arch was outside the permitted area, but everything else required a permit.
