The most AMAZING place in Canyonlands you've NEVER heard of
Canyonlands National Park is relatively well known. Most people who go to the Moab, Utah area at least make a stop at Canyonlands National Park to see the overlooks at Island in the Sky or to get that iconic photo at Mesa Arch.
And then there's the Needles District. Definitely not the most popular area in the park. When I heard about Salt Creek Trail, no one I talked to knew what I was talking about. The logistics of the Salt Creek Trail were confusing. Permits are required and only go on sale at certain times of the year. The Salt Creek Trail also generally requires a shuttle. And you should probably backpack it. Oh, and then there are bear canisters and water to worry about.
So it sounds like a little too much trouble, huh? Well, as with many outdoor adventures, some of the biggest payoffs require a little more effort than normal. And the Salt Creek Trail is no exception. But it is so worth it. This trip through Canyonlands National Park isn't a backpacking trip. It's an adventure. The first major sight is Kirk's Cabin. This is one of the most well preserved cabins I've seen, including a broken wagon, fireplace and lots and lots of nails, cans, glass and other relics left behind from long ago. No graffiti and no one seems to take anything. It's all there for you to see.
Then you are rewarded with countless ruins. We spotted 7 or more, and only knew about 3 going in. Big Ruin is the largest Native American ruin site in Canyonlands National Park. You can't reach the main site, but there are pottery shards, corn and arrowheads everywhere. You'll surely find a few more surprise ruin sites - including several graineries - as you continue walking to the next major sight; All American Man. All American Man is a red, white and blue pictograph that....well, it looks fake. But it's not. Maybe I should mention here that there are some strange pictographs along this hike. There is a little man with antenna, All American Man and two figures who appear to be in.....all I can think is spaceships. Strange.
After All American Man, you come up to Four Faces. Four Faces is another amazing pictograph set right above yet another ruins site.
Oh, and did I mention the arches? There are nearly as many random arches as there are ruins on this section of the trail. Many were not named on my Gaia.
Then we were at our camp for the night. Luckily there was water just beyond it at Upper Jump.
The next day, we headed to Angel Arch. I won't lie, I was pretty excited. Angel Arch is an enormous natural arch set high up on a cliff. As you can see in the video, Angel Arch appears to have an angel leaning up against one side of it. It's extremely unique. But like many things on the Salt Creek Trail, that's not enough. There is also a stone pillar called Molar Rock at the base of Angel Arch. Honestly, it looks like a heart to me, but I don't get to name it. The combination of Angel Arch and Molar Rock makes for an amazing and other wordly scene, not to mention some really cool pictures.
Then it was back to camp for night two.
Day 3 was mostly walking as fast as we could. The scenery was still spectacular, but we were tired and still had to drive home, so it was heads down and walk forward. We hit Peek A Boo (a cool hole through the rocks complete with pictographs), and then, after a short 3 miles down a sandy road, we were back at the truck.
Canyonlands is amazing. And the Salt Creek Trail gives you some of the most rugged, unique and beautiful sights in the park. If you haven't heard of it, I recommend you check it out. You will not be disappointed.

In 1980, the road to Angel Arch was open to 4x4 vehicles. I took my wife and two young sons, one an infant only weeks old. There was a thunderstorm at Angel Arch, with echos through the canyons. On the way out, as the road bent around the canyon wall, I saw a small cloud of dirt floating in the air indicating an approaching vehicle. It turned out to be 3 guys on dirt bikes. They wore bandannas covering their mouth and noses. I stopped as we slowly moved past each other on the narrow road. Making eye contact with the lead driver, a moment of recognition. He dropped his mask and backpedaled the bike to speak to me through my open window. It was David Conley, a photographer for the Deseret News. I had met him only once before, when I was 15. We both grew up over 1,000 miles away in East Texas. His brother was my scoutmaster, and knowing I was interested in photography, had arranged for David to give me a tour of the Deseret News in Salt Lake City when my family passed through on the way to Yellowstone in 1973. Still the strangest meeting in the strangest place of my entire life.

You folks really are blessed, In the 1970's we had none of the nice gear, gps, what was that? Our tents were okay, and we could rappel but few did it. We did arches and Druid Arch but you guys are filling in not huge but immense gaps that I can only enjoy through you two, Not cool, but gorgeous, stupendous, stunning, glorious humbling, mind exploding, extravagant, outrageous, befuddling, and more. Not thanks, but gratitude.

This was one of our favorite backpacking trips. If you're interested, you'll need to do some research on the permits. They're overly complicated and you have to be ready when they go up because they go quick. Water and temperatures also add to the logistics. But so worth it.

Thanks for taking us along. I've been to Island, Needles and Maze Districts, and when you said you were going to Angel Arch, it reminded me of something from back in the '70s or '80s, which was confirmed when we got there with you. I drove a rented 4-wheel drive back in there, and set up my tent within a short distance of where you were standing. I, however, drove through weeds, rather than hiking through rocks. Re. the Maze, I took the road in to the ranger station, then intended to hike down into the canyon, but chickened out when I realized how easily I could be found all dried up months later. I also got to the Doll House when I was on a 3-day whitewater rafting trip a few years later, and we stopped for a short break at the confluence of the Green and Colorado, and I climbed up a steep cliff to see it in person. That's the kind of scenery you don't get in northern IL, to say the least.

When I was there in 1985, you could four-wheel past The Four Faces (IIRC, the end of the four-wheel road was at a waterfall named Upper Jump). You could also get to within a mile or so of Angel Arch, which, IIRC was up a different fork of Salt Creek. I hiked from the end of the road to All-American Man, but didn't get to the arches and ruins in the upper part of the drainage. It's an amazing place, with the combination of desert canyon scenery and all of the archaeological features. All American Man struck me as something you might have seen on a Greatful Dead album cover, sort of a psychedelic Uncle Sam, in red white and blue paint.

I have abused mine for over a year . Thank you again!

I am going to put it on my list of hikes to do as I love deeper into backcountry hiking. What is really good is to point out what not to do such as not walking on sensitive areas, look but don't touch, enjoy and preserve. It's an amazing place. Definitely look into the permit system because it's convoluted. Permits go up in windows (popular season and unpopular - hot - season) twice a year in blocks. Thank you; I was at Canyonlands in 1997. Didn't hike like you guys but after visiting all the other State parks in Utah, Canyonlands was my favorite (even better than the Grand Canyon) because of it's vastness and untouched beauty. Witnessed a small flash flood that came from a distance. Saw water falling like many spouts that eventually about a half an hour was gently starting to flow underfoot were we were hiking. down below there was a deluge of water in the parking lot. Returning to the park headquarters he told us that we witnessed something that less that 10% of people ever see. Now 73, Thank you for showing me what I may never see...I live in NJ. Just came across this video. Brings back memories. I’m 62. In 1973 our family vacation was a trip to several national parks organized by my grandfather who roamed the West in his truck camper after retiring as a steelworker in Pittsburgh. One of our day trips on that trip was a Jeep tour to Angel Arch. At age 12, I remember our family of 6 piling into a Jeep wagoneer and spending the day 4-wheeling to Angel Arch. I can’t remember for certain but we may have viewed many of the ruins, arches and artwork that you included in your video. It’s interesting that the national park service no longer allows motorized vehicles in the area - a good move. I would love to make the trip on foot again. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I've lived in Utah since 1973 and I knew this place was beautiful but didn't have lots of time, money, wheels, etc... to get the job done. This KZbin stuff helps.

Such a relaxing and enjoyable video, thanks for taking the time to share the experience. I'm bringing my family to the Moab area next week. We live and adventure all over Alaska, can't wait to see this completely different environment in person.

I absolutely love the desert. Moab, especially deserves more exploration. I didn't even realize Salt Creek existed until I watched the documentary on Netflix about the Hayduke trail. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

I've not only heard of it, I've been there. It was in October of 1985. Back then, you could access the lower part of the route you backpacked with a 4wd. I car camped two or three nights. The 4wd road ended at Upper Jump, IIRC, and I day-hiked from the end of the road to All American Man and back. I saw Four Faces, and Angel Arch (you could drive to within sight of it) and found a route up to stand directly under Angel Arch. It's one of the most memorable places I've been to, for both the natural features and the archaeological features. Even though I was there later than you were (I think. The cottonwoods were fully in fall colors), I had great weather, highs probably low '80's and above freezing overnight. I did get a few hours of light rain the last day I was in there.

We had permits for an out and back from Cathedral Butte to Angel Arch but there was a threat of snow at Cathedral Butte for our return and didn't want to get stuck up there so we switched our permit for an overnight on the Lost/Squaw Canyon Loop. Glad I get to see a good video of the trail though!

The Joint Trail slot canyon near Chesler park is something to see...I wouldn't want to be in there during an earthquake. The Fins and the Doll House in the Maze district are satisfyingly trippy, just to name a couple of the numerous features found there.

Only seen bear tracks in a few places, and bears in a few more. But they're definitely in this place. You must've gone the opposite way that we did for a tough climb. Not sure which would be worse; the climb to Cathedral or the deep sand to Cave Spring...Worth it either way.

I just went 50 yards back and got her mittens. Adam carried you out of the Grand Canyon! I think point goes to him on this one. Angel Arch is a special place. The whole canyon is, but the ruins in the cave and Angel Arch were the high points for us. I think you can day hike it in from Cave Spring. Long hike, but not for super heroes like yourselves. Horse Canyon is right off of there too that looked pretty interesting. And here I thought Canyonlands was just about overlooks!

Hello from Ouray CO! Awesome scenery! Thank you very much for sharing this with us! We have a travel trailer that just arrived. Since most of our local forest service access has closed off now due to our snowfall, we will most likely head out to this UT area for some boondocking and hiking. I will plan to incorporate some of this area into our travels. Safe travels!

Years ago I hiked to the base and then part way up Mt St Helens from the Johnston Ridge Observatory in what I thought would be an out-and-back of about 15 miles but it turned out to be closer to 20 miles of up and down and scrambling over scree. When I got back to my motorhome at Silver Lake I lay down on my couch and about 15 minutes later both my legs began to Charlie Horse big time -- I spent about an hour with constant attacks that were frickin painful. The area of this hike in Canyonlands and heading south towards Mexican Hat and west along Hwy 261 are an astonishing number of cave dwellings/ruins. Can you imagine what the Indians living in these places must have experienced with virtually no light pollution -- the landscape is among the most beautiful on Earth and with the carpet of stars at night it must have been spectacular.

I love Canyonlands! I used to live in Eastern Utah a number of years ago when my kids were growing up and would take them camping and such down that a way. Although. I do have to say there were hardly anyone hiking those areas much in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. I'm just an old desert rat and still love those deserts.
