I think your report of "not having the right GPS coordinates", likely has to do with the fact that some units use different coordinate formats. There are actually 3 commonly used formats and some hand held units allow a way to select WHICH format you input. Hope this helps for future GPS navigating.
@JerryArizona3 жыл бұрын
I put them in right. It was in DD format. It just wasn't exactly where the beta said. It was close enough to see it, but I just didn't know excatly what I was looking for; hard to tell how big the KoW is from pictures. What's REALLY strange is I went back a year or so later. Using the same tracks that were recorded in my GPS....got me completely lost. It was like the entire landscape had shifted. Like an entire road I'd used before wasn't there. Kinda spooky, honestly. Honestly, it's really hard to say and I don't know why it was so confusing for me the second time. I had my old routes on GPS and even following those the landscape was different. As long as you have a headlamp, Valley of Dreams wouldn't be bad. You can almost see the car the entire hike if you park where I did. A GPS helps. (I use Gaia on my phone and it's worked fine for years now.) I wouldn't recommend hiking out of King of Wings in the dark. The drainages in the chinle all look the same. If you're comfortable with a GPS and night navigation though, it's doable.

You know, I recorded this trip on Gaia on my iphone and then went back about 2 years later and even using the gps tracks I did on this trip, I could not find it. I was using an old laptop and it took forever. I recently built my own and it's pretty high end. I followed the guide for a $1400 4K+ editing PC from Matt WhoisMatt Johnson (another YT channel) and upgraded the CPU to the highest (AMD i9). The rest I went high end or middle ground (Geforce RTX 2060 GPU). I've never built a computer before, but it went pretty smoothly. Since then (way after this video), I've upgraded to 4K footage with lots layers, color grading and stuff like warp stabilizer. I find even my new computer starts to chug in Premiere Pro if I don't use proxies. It's still a beast and a huge upgrade from what I was using before. Before exporting would take overnight. Now it takes maybe an hour or so for export. If you can't upgrade, make sure you're at least using proxies....and save often.

Honestly, I went back a few years later and was not entirely comfortable because it was so difficult to tell what was what....and I absolutely don't want to go wandering around on someone's private property. I'm thinking it's rocks in the chinle. As it rains and water runs across it, it erodes the soft chinle. The chinle directly under the rocks is more compressed than the chinle around them, so that gets washed away, eventually leaving a rock sitting up on a pedestal. Not sure if that's right, but it's still really cool to look at.
