I don't know how to express this. I know I'll fail but let me try anyway. My husband died in 2012 and I moved our family to Colorado where I took our three boys out into nature as much as possible because it helped us heal. This past June, I lost my youngest son. I've been trying to find my footing again and your montage of all the beautiful places you've been to this past year are places I've dreamed of going to for a long time and am in the process of trying to make that happen this summer and you are providing more insipiration for me. I feel a connection to my lost loves in such amazing natural beauty. I'm glad you realized you didn't fail. Treasure those experiences.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your husband and your beautiful boy. I watched the love of my life walk through her profound grief after the loss of her 24yr old son just year and two weeks before we connected, her Daughter was 21. She moved to the countryside in Scotland (I’m Australian) and she lived in an old gate house from a derelict estate/mansion. There was so much land that and really old trees that it was like she was in the wilderness, she walked those woodlands and had a tree that held her grief. She would spend time with that old twisted limbed old tree and it became the place that she put feathers in its branches she would speak to that tree, and cry at that tree. She moved to nature to help heal her broken heart. She walked through her grief often she walked backwards, and then forwards, and then it was suddenly a mountain of grief to climb, sometimes she was at the bottom of that mountain sitting in her messy all consuming grief. But she kept walking, whilst I walked beside her and at times when her grief was so raw it made me cry for her. Just keep walking you will never get over losing your son, but your grief will change and you will find moments of laughter and joy at times. I know my soulmate’s son was with her always and that he brought us together from opposite ends of the planet. Unfortunately I lost her to breast cancer 3.5yrs ago, we only had 4yrs together but it was a lifetime, she had only just turned 57 10 days before she departed the physical world. She taught me so much about resilience and a mother’s heart to make sure her other child was ok, and having to be there for her. I’m so grateful for the time we had together and the adventures we went on, filled with wildlife encounters and travels through my country and hers, then Sth east Asia a lot, we watched wild Orangutans in Borneo on two separate trips. She visits me now like her son used to visit her and leave her white feathers. I know I will see her again, I am lucky as she was a singer songwriter cabaret artist and she left behind her voice, what an incredible gift that is to have that. May your son light your path so that you know that he is walking beside you. I talk to my partner nearly every day. Just know it does get a little easier. It is only love that truly matters and making memories with those we love. You’re doing the best you can and that is enough, the path is winding perhaps you need a grief tree. Just be gentle on yourself we are all perfectly imperfect. Let nature continue to nurture you and your kid’s. Wishing you all the best. I’m sorry this is a thesis. One step at a time is all we can dog.

Yes, my friend, after eight decades on this voyage we call life I can tell you…getting old ain’t for sissies. But it’s better than the alternatives, as they say. Most of my adventures are vicarious through folks like you. Keep on truckin’ for as long as you can.

That one made me cry. My husband and I watched all those videos together throughout the year and had laughed at the famous middle finger and cringed at the injuries. On December 2, in the early afternoon, my husband took a break from working in his shop to go on a bicycle ride with a friend who had stopped by. He was in an accident...a tanker truck pulled into the bike lane in front of him and he somehow didn't/couldn't get out of the way in time...the impact broke his neck and left him paralyzed...he died from complications in the hospital just before Christmas. You're not an old man, but please, please, be extra careful doing what you love.

Glad you're both on the mend. My dad told me the worst part about Bells was manually blinking his eye. Stuff just comes out of nowhere. Appreciate life, hope for the best and focus more on what is going right than what goes wrong. At least that's the goal, right?

I feel your pain, seriously, on all levels. I turn 54 today! No one gets out alive. . . all the more reason to make the most of the time we have! Let's take risks, just not stupid ones. For me, the key is to know myself and what I'm honestly capable of and then walking that fine line with confidence and wisdom. Constant accurate situational assessment never hurts either when pushing the limits. Having a plan B when the hits the fan never hurts either! '25 is going to be great Brotherman!
@JerryArizona2 күн бұрын
Yeah, I just pushed my goals into 2025. We’ll see how that turns out. I’m sure it’ll be fun, even when it’s not. Also, 54 is a great age. And I remind myself every now and then of a line I heard somewhere; ‘it’s a fine line between brave and stupid’. I try to stay on the brave side of that line but don’t always succeed.

"Maybe we should just go with the flow sometimes." Awesome message, I was thinking similarly before you said this. I've had injuries and problems derail my plans multiple times, and sometimes it puts you on a path to things that may not be what you planned or wanted, but you can still take advantage of what opportunities you do have and still do some really cool things.

I have a tendency to go to worst case scenario thinking the second anything doesn't go eactly as planned. Figured maybe I wasn't the only person who needed a reminder to look for the positive. It's easy to get in your own head and spin. Spent a good bit of time doing that. I think it's depression and it's sneaky, especially if you aren't familiar with it. Easy from the outside to say 'just be happy'. But if you're depressed, nothing makes you happy. Or you lose that will to do the things that made you happy. The scenes on the couch were seconds in the video, but they were weeks and months in real life. Tina and my friends would have to force me to go out sometimes. I always enjoyed it when I went, but getting off the couch and making myself go was a battle. Can't say how many times I packed to go only to sleep in the next morning, unpack and sit around the house. Try getting out there and see if it helps. (I'm not an expert, but it seemed to help for me.) Hope 2025 is better for you.

I don’t think anyone had a year when everything worked out as planned! Too many surprises this year took my breath away. I am aging, as well, and find I can’t do many things I used to. Some is the aging process and not keeping myself in shape, the rest is the shock of the world we live in. My solution has been to mourn, regret, blame myself, and a sense of futility. But with every end-of-year , I find waiting for the fresh start and hope for a better year coming, allows me to leave the past in the past. At least for the time being. Why do we blame ourselves so much? Life can be tough, but if we can find meaning and value in doing something, we can be more successful than last year. I enjoy your videos, Jerry, whether you make mistakes or not! You are doing things many of us cannot and spending your adventures sharing. That’s quite a gift! Just don’t fall anymore!
@JerryArizona2 күн бұрын
I have the same default; go straight to worst case scenario. I have to make a conscious effort to reprogram my thinking. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Anyway, I'll work on the not falling thing. Definitely something I do not recommend.

Wow! That was an impressive year, I'd say. as a 63 year old lapsed climber/canyoneer, I think you are crushing it dude. The beauty of your videos stands out like a Hoodoo on a flat plain. Keep up the great work. Your stuff is so perfect for us 'everyman' guys. Not the most badass, but seeking the beauty and the fun in the endless adventure land that is the western US. I am surprised that you aren't feeling yourself more. I am inspired to try and get off the couch. 2024 was a dream for you!

I just don't like setting goals, then being lazy and not working to achieve them. Not used to that. Had to remind myself that it all turned out fine anyway. Don't linger and get stuck. Make adjustments and keep moving forward.

Jerry and Tina - thank you! Love the videos and they’ve led us to many hikes we wouldn’t otherwise have done. Fishers Towers remains one of our favourites and we owe it to you both. As Dylan Thomas wrote: rage against the dying of the light. Best wishes for 2025!

I think one of the greatest challenges of aging is making adjustments as our bodies become more and more limiting. But since I found your channel partway through the year, I knew nothing about your injuries/hospitalizations and their impact on your plans. I would have never guessed because you guys have done so many amazing hikes that most people just dream about. I've really enjoyed your adventures.

Always enjoy your videos and give yourself a break. Plans are a good thought exercise that help identify priorities, life then happens and you either go with the flow or get stuck. You went with the flow and had a good year. I was very impressed with your last video rock climbing, I wasn't expecting that. So keep enjoying life and making videos and I will be happy to watch.

Thank you so much for this! We have taken much inspiration from your videos. We have done many of these hikes ourselves and they bring back fond memories. Two and a half years ago we moved 600 miles away from our home of 25 years, got new jobs, and built a house (that we're still finishing). I settled into our new life while rehabbing a knee injury that severely curtailed my hiking abilities. I am turning 60 this coming year. Sometimes I feel constricted and overwhelmed by the life we chose to change. But it's all good. The house will get finished, I like my new job and the knee is improving. We also have an unlimited amount of outdoor adventures from our doorstep. We are exceedingly fortunate to have the life that we do. So, thanks for your words if wisdom, Jerry. Life, in part, is what you make it and when it goes sideways we just have to "go with the flow" and find a different adventure. Looking forward to more of your beautiful videos. Thanks for the inspiration and Happy New Year!

I thought I had a mild case of kidney stones after hiking Kanab/Page. Doctor visit found my family history of coronary issues caught up to me after a lifetime of running, cycling, mountain climbing and hiking. It can be worse. My wife just came in the room and said, “what’s so funny?” I said I wasn’t laughing, she said “you have a big smile on your face.” I am watching the latest episode of Jerry Arizona. Your content got me through 2024 while I worked through a lot of tests. Thank you so much - it’s beyond wonderful.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you can get a decent prognosis and treatment and get back out there. Tina and I have talked a lot about how we'll have to adjust our lifestyles as we age. Shorter hikes, more overlooks, maybe an RV or razor eventually. I dunno. But we'll figure out something. Hope you can as well.

Thank you for this. As your wife would say "it is beautiful." We humans remember the bad times more and for some weird reason the the good times less. In the end the good times usually out weigh the bad ones. You both sure have had some amazing times. My husband and I are huge nature lovers and each year we go exploring. I'm in my 60's and he is in his 70s now and we have noticed a considerable change in our bodies. We can no longer go on long hikes, carry heavy camp packs, or be in high altitudes but this hasn't stopped us from getting out there because there are still so many beautiful places that we can adventure to in our 4x4.
@JerryArizona2 күн бұрын
We plan to get an RV or razor or something when we can't get around as well. Just gotta adjust as we go, I guess.
@DanitaReynolds2 күн бұрын
@ we bought a 4x4 truck and hauled our camping gear to remote wildernesses for years and then almost two years ago we bought a Four Wheel slide-in pop-up camper for the truck. Four Wheel Campers is the name of the company. We love that it sits lower and has a low center of gravity. Our 3/4 ton truck doesn’t even know it’s carrying it and we can take it on remote adventures. It’s been a game changer for us.

This is awesome! So glad you didn't let injuries stop you from getting back out there. I have a similar tale this year (but only one, not three like you!) While filming the first day on trail of a three week trip, I fell through the floor of a cave, and injured my foot. An orthopedic boot got me through the next 16 days and 4,000 miles of driving trail, a little walking (I couldnt sit out at White Pocket or the north rim!) and filming, but it turned out I'd broken 6 bones, dislocated 2 joints, and torn the tendon that holds your foot together. One surgery, two screws, and 6 weeks on a peg leg crutch later, I need to get myself back off this couch and out to the wilderness again soon. People with me when I broke my foot think I'm a badass....but I'm definitely feeling like a clumsy old lady instead. I just don't bounce as well as I used to. Thanks to you and Tina for continuing inspiration to explore.

Pursue your dreams, but listen to your body. I can't do all the things that I could do when I was younger, but I can still do what I love. I began backpacking again in my 60s. I've learned that hiking slower allows me to stop and appreciate all the beauty nature has to offer. I'll keep at it until I can't. Happy New Year!

I edited this in order. It started as a 'look at all the bad things that happened', but when I got into the footage from the year, I started wondering what exactly I was complaining about. So I kinda hit the realization in real time here. It's been an incredible year, even if it wasn't the year I had planned. Figured I can't be the only one with a tendency to focus on the negative. Hopefully it helps someone figure that out sooner.

Sorry to hear that. I'm learning to appreciate what I can do, even if it's not as extreme as what I used to do. Hopefully you can get out there and still enjoy the outdoors, albeit from a lesser capacity. There are still plenty of drive up overlooks and similar adventures that are amazing. Even just driving out and camping on BLM property can scratch that itch for me. Gotta remind ourselves that what we can do today may not be as much as yesterday, but it's probably more than we can do tomorrow.
