Why do people think that Katas are used in a fight? Clearly they never tried to learn the art. Kata translates to form, which means "formation". The point of a Kata is to teach you to practice footwork, a combination of strikes, blocks and kicks, in FORMATION in order to train your body to do it naturally as second nature. It's NOT meant to be used in a fight. Do boxers draw a line in the street with chalk and shadow box with their toes touching the line in a fight? Do soldiers use sim rounds in the battlefield? NO it's a form of training to make what you learn become second nature. By the time you become a 1st dan black belt, you will punch straighter and faster than you use to, your kicks will be direct and quicker than they use to, and your blocks will become instinct, and you will know which parts of the human anatomy to target to survive a dangerous situation. You won't dish out a kata to survive. You make the art second nature, embed the knowledge and training into your sub-concious mind that way you won't think to use it, you will simply do it naturally.

Kata are meant to scratch the surface of technique and discipline while teaching strikes and blocks. I'm not saying I agree but there are meanings behind the strikes and blocks in kata even if they can be situational

Well, soldiers who use non lethal rounds, still do shoot, charge, seek for cover, and clear rooms the same way as soldiers in a war or an operation. I understand what you are saying, but still, practicing moves, which will not be applayable in a fight, for me is a waste of time. You can always practice your core movements and do exactly what you said, but taking it step further and remembering all those moves and make them your "default" just messes around and wastes time like i already mentioned.. there are lots of fancy moves which are just.. fancy. Like that 360 jump which ended on the ground, kneeling. And that just was one example out of hundred

I like to read the comments about people whining "Karate kata is shite! it's useless! people don't act like that on real fights!" It just makes me laugh they forgot Karate was once called "Bloody Sport" and was changed to be more safe. Those people forgot how hard is it and how amazing traditional Karate is.

Rather too insulting but you can't really blame those who do criticise as 'shite' 'unreal' and 'delusionary' . This nonsense is trotted out year after year. The attacks are delivered in such a basic fashion, and like automatons, the defense so often uses the advanced techniques available in these advanced kata, in a depressingly step1 step 2 step 3 type format and then continuously compensates with wildly gymnastic manoeuvres that are nowhere in the kata, bare no relation to it and would be completely unnecessary if the kata were to be applied with some thought as to what the techniques available could actually do. And to top it all, the one truly visually spectacular manoeuvre that Unsu is known for: the 360 degree jump/kick let's call it, is treated in exactly the same way as for Kanku Sho: a 180 degree jump/ kick. Of course there is a lot to admire in the the athleticism and the technical excellence in both the performance of the kata and the bunkai. It takes time, effort, and dedication as well as a nurturing of natural physical ability, to achieve such a level as is clearly shown. Such a shame then, like so many of the kata performed at this level in this type of competition, that the bunkai as such, is limited in vision and a appears a slave to theatricality rather than an insight into the potential lethal practicality. Just one example: being picked up bodily and lifted over head, the attacker flings his legs as high up as possible, this making the throw look even more spectacular. Competition has it's plus points, but take it for what it is. I can see Olympic flag waving in the none too distant future and then we before we know it, it will have gone the way of judo; sport only. Then further down the line teams being awarded points for artistic interpretation as in figure skating, gymnastics, or synchronised swimming..... What's martial about that?

We do have 2 remember that karate has evolved into a sport at this level - especially here, at the WKF level. With that said, while watching this bunkai of Unsu, I saw the team implement traditional blocks and counter attacks as Shotokan master Masatoshi Nakayama would demonstrate. However, the defender (in this video) would continue with either a sweep, throw, or other extra move. Remember ~~ this is now at a sport level, and the simple block and counter attack would not suffice. Thus, this type of bunkai is more for tournament purposes - which aims to impress spectators and judges alike. I will admit, it is impressive to see someone being thrown over their head, or seeing fancy round-house kicks turn into hook-kicks. Much respect for performing these moves which takes tons of hard work, focus & practice to perfect. As with all arts, there is a competitive sports side to it. We just need to distinguish when it's appropriate to perform the "sports" side to an art, or the more "realistic/traditional" purpose of an art. Here, in this vid, I believe its perfectly fine as to the bunkai they are performing... it has a mix of traditional karate, as well as the modern & more athletic sports version of karate. But we must be wary and not stray too far from the traditional base - or else we may possibly lose sight of it as we venture further into the sports world of karate.

@Jim Little Was it really made to be serious? It's a competition, and it's impossible to win without making some cinema. You need to impress everybody in the stadium, not only the judges. Technically, a well placed one-shot is by far more effective. But not visually impressive at all. You need to replace the things in their context, right man?
