Also, you have raised the bar on pilot videos. While Flight Chops set the standard for general story (non-pilot), you are number one for the pilot perspective. There is a lot of effort in post and it shows well. Kudos!!

Hi Jesse, its so nice to see the large number of compliments you get from the people who "get it" and understand what your videos are all about. Congrats on that. Regarding Wake Turbulence responses, I learned very early on that vortice encounters can be instantly fatal . Your prompt action to climb and avoid was commendable and so was the PF's action of AP Off and manual climb. As you obviously are well aware , you just can't wait to see what happens . You need to react NOW to ensure that you don't suddenly get the "big roll" of doom. Great guy, great flying, and great videos. Sure glad I found you. Will look forward to more.

Every approach may seem normal but you have to always be alert for the unexpected and react accordingly as you did so well on the approach to Cancun. You made the appropriate adjustments necessary to avoid the wake of the 767 you were following. I guess the 2 most common situations you run into are wake turbulence and wind shear on final and must be dealt with as expeditiously as possible to avoid a serious situation. Great job and look forward to your next video!

Quick reaction time by Lori taking over from the autopilot. On Steveo's last video and now your's, you both had to visually find your way into your parking spots at customs. I would think with everything being digital nowadays, the customs' parking layout would be available online. Steveo commented that he hadn't run across the Cancun methodology before and was not aware of it before landing. Is Cancun an outlier and/or behind the times? Cheers from B.C.

So, 1/2 dot high is definitely alright for those quite smaller than a 767, because 1 dot deviation is about 4% * actual height (from a quick google). Number of dots vary based on the display as well, so it's hard to have a dot standard.

Right at 19:57 in the video I noticed a very noticeable air leak sounding noise start and continue (that almost sounds like when you check your oxygen masks but not quite as loud). I’ve heard this same noise traveling in other phenoms during the decent at fairly low altitudes and am wonder what this noise might be from? Is this a function of the pressurization system or something? Anyway, excellent video as always! Keep up the great work and vids! 👍
@IllFlyIt6 жыл бұрын
The bottom of the fuselage has a few calibrated leaks. They fully open around 1500ft AGL I’ve noticed. They’re definitely audible to us up front. On initial climb out they go quiet at roughly the same altitude (1500ft AGL)

I am a commercial pilot in training and I love your videos. I just have a CRM question/comment and I hope you can explain it to me. It seemed throughout the flight you kept making suggestions and calling for deviations and where to go on the glideslope and where to land. Should this not have been the Captain's responsibility? She seemed to have ignored a lot of what you were saying, or said "that's what I planned." Was this a dual Captain scenario where you both make the call outs? I am just a little confused on the CRM used in this video. not trying to be rude or anything.
@IllFlyIt6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great question Matt. It's definitely not rude at all. Lori and I have flown together for hundreds of hours and we are both captain qualified. This is how we "jive". Crew communication is driven by SOP (standard operating procedure). SOP is the minimum of what needs to be accomplished or communicated. The suggestions I make are from the PM (pilot monitoring) perspective and keeps the communication between us active. A lot of this is how we "stay ahead" of the airplane together. My background is mainly single pilot flying. I've always been a talker even when flying by myself. I vocalize A LOT of extra stuff that isn't required but has been helpful. It keeps your mind engaged with the task at hand. I dont know how many times I've dialed in a new heading and pressed HDG on the autopilot and when I vocalized the change I discovered the lateral mode was actually set to ROL mode. It's helped me pass checkrides and avoid ATC clearance deviations. Again, great question and thanks for asking. I hope this clears it up for you.
@mattnorthrup78526 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that! I have noticed you vocalize a lot which is a good thing. Great CRM! Thanks for the reply, and blue skies!

How do you enable the autopilot to follow the glideslope but be above the glideslope? I think you were a half dot high at the time before Lori took control of the plane.
@IllFlyIt6 жыл бұрын
When we captured the localizer we only armed NAV which tracks laterally. In order to keep ourselves above the glide slope we use VS (vertical speed) to maintain a rate that keeps us above it. Great question, thanks for asking.

I am curious as to how the 767 was directed unto the approach and there was no chatter on the controllers frequency? Not having flown in international airspace I Am not sure how much different it is from US. And wasn’t Moonbeam inbetween 340AS and the 767?

Also. How much room is behind you in the cockpit? Can you close doors behind you? Can you stretch your legs and lay back a little?
@IllFlyIt6 жыл бұрын
Behind our seats are a bunch of manuals, flashlights, and storage. I fly with the seat fully back and legroom is minimal. I can stretch my legs out a little but not fully. If I move my seat forward I can recline it quite a bit. I've done 4.5 hour flights and it's tough.

@IllFlyIt6 жыл бұрын
The dot is referring the the glide slope that vertically aligns us with the runway. Typically we fly on the glide slope. When we’re flying behind a heavy jet we alter our approach to fly higher behind so that we avoid the wake turbulence. We refer to this as flying a dot high. Thanks for the question and for watching! More videos coming soon
@stephenwallace72886 жыл бұрын
Ah okay thanks for the answer... so is that actually a "dot" on the glide slope display on the MFD?
@IllFlyIt6 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's actually displayed on our PFD (primary flight display). If the needle or in our case, a green diamond, is centered, you are ON the glide slope. If the needle is below the center then you're above the glide slope and if the needle is above center then you're below the glide slope. I'll try and have a camera on the PFD showing this all of the time in future videos.

@wkvintus6 жыл бұрын
Repeating the communications from the tower are usually SOP and a very good idea, if nothing more than verification. If you take a look at the history of commercial aviation, not talking between the Captain and 2nd seat lead to a LOT of problems and I would say over 200 deaths for the simple reason that the copilot did not say anything even though the captain was doing something incorrect. Talking is the BEST SOP there is.
@CaptainArt7776 жыл бұрын
You are talking about 2 different items. He talks to much. All four of us are high time pilots and we all agree with it. When you bring up that one about the co-pilot not saying anything to the captain is not what we are talking about. How did you even get on that???
@IllFlyIt6 жыл бұрын
We repeat clearances because whenever a change is made to the FMS flight plan or autopilot flight control panel (heading/alt) it requires verification from from both pilots. You are hearing us input and verify the changes. What questions have I not answered? I usually try and reply back to as many questions as I can.
