The key is "control of the ball". This makes it almost impossible to call bc the game is happening way too fast to tell at what exact point the ball has been gathered while simultaneously watching when each foot is stepping.

In college basketball, technically it is a travel violation. It is the definition of pivot foot that matters to determine if it is legal or illegal, not the number of steps after dribble. It is the consideration of while gathering the ball that makes a lot of confusion.

These NBA gather/control rules have been invented out of thin air just a few years ago, and it is changing the game for the worse. It's just a matter of time before all players eventually master the "0 step" and virtually all lay ups will consist of 3 steps because it's virtually impossible to objectively determine control or gather. It's very subjective, and the fact that they claim this can to be decided in real time by a referee is quite frankly an insult to one's intelligence. So long the days where a player like Dr. J had to perform miraculous dances around his defenders with just 2 steps. It was like a ballet. Having 3 steps at your disposal (by mastering a so called gather step) changes the game entirely.

This rule was integrated in 2018 in FIBA and NBA in 2019. This was a travel in the past, but they stopped calling this from 2003-2004 when the nba was changed by gathering off the wrong foot. Please don’t pretend this was always part of NBA rules unless you suggest that everyone before 2003-2004 year just didn’t know they could take an extra step. This was considered a travel because you gather and that foot that is down was considered your pivot foot, you could lift it but you could not return it to the ground, unless you did a Hop Stop, and neither foot was a pivot foot. I am not sure if this zero step is integrated into highschool or other leagues...

It wasn't added per se more like clarified. The gather step was acceptable since the 80's (maybe even earlier) they just don't call it the "gather step" back then. I watched a lot of 80's games since my dad have a shit ton of DVD of games in that era and they don't call them travelling.
@bpmachete
@bpmachete 2 жыл бұрын
@@monkeydog8681 It was added and check the videos again. When you gathered while taking that step, that step was the first step. In fact there is none of the two step in general, you have to understand the real basketball rules still in effect around the world. When you pick up the ball that foot is your pivot foot, then if it is raised you are not allowed to establish another pivot foot you have to shoot or pass. You could gather and hop stop that was where none of the two feet when landed could be pivots. But in general you will see them gather when stepping with right foot then lift take that one more step and go up with it. That's just the way it is in real basketball.

I appreciate that he mentioned that those are NBA rules for basketball. Wether its NBA, FIBA, or whatever league their rules apply to those leagues. When you go to a court for none organized basketball are you really expecting people who may have played their for decades to adopt rules they had never played under simply because some organized league made or changed rules? Professional leagues are entertainment and often change rule with that in mind.

The problem is you start with the level that very few people play under those rules. That is not the rules at the *NF (high school level) or the NCAA* . That "gather step is considered the pivot foot and then if you pick up and put down that foot before passing or shooting, it is considered a traveling violation. There are no steps criteria for traveling. It is all about the pivot foot. Also, there is no such thing as a "league rule." The rules on traveling almost always directly use National Federation Rules, which are the rules that every state in the union uses for their high school associations. Most middle schools adopt those rules as well. It would be almost impossible to use their own rulebook or write their own rulebook. So they are not reinventing the wheel, they are using what is already out there. The final thing, traveling is almost always one of the hardest rules to officiate. It is hard because players move fast and often officials see only part of the action. You must have control of the ball and sometimes the play is going away from you or you are looking through bodies to see the ball or the feet. It is inconsistently called at all levels, from high school, and youth ball to the college and pro level. A lot of people view the NBA and try to apply it to the level they play at instead of the NF level where rules are clearly written and discussed. So just this video alone is partially contributing to the confusion of the rules by starting with NBA rules and not addressing the NF or NCAA Rules that most players will play. Even FIBA in this country is not the same as US Rules sets, and it should be noted if those are the people playing at that level the most.

I think you are reading the rules wrong. "Gaining control of the ball" refers to situations where it is not quite clear who the controlling player is. If you just pick up the ball after dribbling, that rule normally doesn't even come into play.

NBA Edit Rule 10, Section XIII-Traveling[2] a. A player who receives the ball while standing still may pivot, using either foot as the pivot foot. b. A player who receives the ball while he is progressing or upon completion of a dribble, may take two steps in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ball. A player who receives the ball while he is progressing must release the ball to start his dribble before his second step. The first step occurs when a foot, or both feet, touch the floor after gaining control of the ball. The second step occurs after the first step when the other foot touches the floor, or both feet touch the floor simultaneously. A player who comes to a stop on step one when both feet are on the floor or touch the floor simultaneously may pivot using either foot as his pivot. If he jumps with both feet he must release the ball before either foot touches the floor. A player who lands with one foot first may only pivot using that foot. A progressing player who jumps off one foot on the first step may land with both feet simultaneously for the second step. In this situation, the player may not pivot with either foot and if one or both feet leave the floor the ball must be released before either returns to the floor. c. In starting a dribble after (1) receiving the ball while standing still, or (2) coming to a legal stop, the ball must be out of the player’s hand before the pivot foot is raised off the floor. d. If a player, with the ball in his possession, raises his pivot foot off the floor, he must pass or shoot before his pivot foot returns to the floor. If he drops the ball while in the air, he may not be the first to touch the ball. e. A player who falls to the floor while holding the ball, or while coming to a stop, may not gain an advantage by sliding. f. A player who attempts a field goal may not be the first to touch the ball if it fails to touch the backboard, basket ring or another player. g. A player is not allowed to be the first to touch his own pass unless the ball touches his backboard, basket ring or another player. h. Upon ending his dribble or gaining control of the ball, a player may not touch the floor consecutively with the same foot (hop). Enforcement According to some observers, enforcement of the rule as written is not necessarily rigorous in the NBA, and traveling violations are often overlooked.[3][4][5]

@lancerubel9453
@lancerubel9453 Жыл бұрын
I agree, but the "steps" issue is confusing. The rule book states that after the dribble ends, you can not lift your pivot foot and return it back down to the ground before the ball is released from the hand for a shot or a pass. So usually on a layup one foot (the pivot foot by definition) is on the ground when the dribble ends, meaning you can only take one step with your non-pivot foot before the ball is released. The pivot foot can not come back down for a "second step" otherwise it is technically a travel by high school and college rules.

Yes, it's a travel. It's always been a travel, it's just that the NBA stopped calling travels back in the early 2000's, and have now updated the rulebook so that all those missed calls were made legal after the fact. Here's the progression: 1) NBA players start drafting players before they have enough development to actually learn how to play the game of basketball. 2) Athletically gifted but unskilled players don't learn proper footwork. 3) NBA referees don't want to stop every third play because they have to teach 19 year olds how to dribble in a regular season game. 4) The league devolves, and the next thing you know, everyone now takes three steps after the last bounce. Go back and watch any highlight reel of NBA dunks from before 2000, and you won't find any of that gather-step nonsense. They take two steps after the last bounce.

This is very well said, Traveling is easily one of the calls missed the most. For anyone who’s played basketball these moves with an extra step (making it three total) don’t even feel natural. This rule was changed in 2009 I believe and since then the nba has been less enjoyable to watch in my opinion.

If you bounce the ball on your last step while you step that is the gather so you can take 3 steps cleanly hence "they take 2 steps off of the last bounce"

There is no question about this move. It is the same thing as if you caught the ball and put it on the floor with both hands poping up to shoot a shot (post move). It is also the same thing as a hop step. The hop step is a gather step. The gather step is done correctly when the ball and the floor meet at the same time. I have never seen other wise

But doesn't the whole basketball franchise go with the nba? You're telling me that you cant dribble, can hold the ball as long as you want in a pickup game? Rules change overtime.

If you play with this rules offense has way more advantages..i understand they just rule and if they are the same for everybody is fine.. But seriously like this offense is way easier. Just saying, I hope you are conscious about it. Playing like this "nba" rules makes a player more evasive,this means more iso and less team basketball, also this should be taken In consideration.

If you combine rules b *and* d...you'll see that you are allowed 3 step. 2 steps, stop, pivot, 1 step, shoot/pass.
@LamarSmitty7
@LamarSmitty7 Жыл бұрын
Go ahead and 1,2 step and stop. Pivot off the 1 l, step through on the 2 after multiple pivots. Lift that pivot and pass the ball. You're going to get called for a travel. Technically the way people are trying to interpret the rule you can stand on the step through and it's not a travel if you don't put your pivot foot back down🤦🏾‍♂️

This is 100% ACCURATE! However, some of the stuff ive seen in the nba, includint James Harden, jts a travel. They say that james harden is doing a step back, but he's not. It's a full blown travel!
@GojoRamsay888
@GojoRamsay888 Жыл бұрын
It should be "in act/or about to control the ball" because like Kyrie who use fake that looks like he about to shoot the ball but he didnt touch it with two hands then continue dribbling which is good, while harden has a way of delaying to hold the ball with two hands but has no intention to dribble it again and while doing that taking an extra step to gain advantage. There are players like D.Rose, Ginobli, MJ (cradle dunk) who gathers while having the ball with one arm and they dont have zero step. Lebron, Giannis, Harden are known to taking more steps than usual so its referees fault for not counting it and just used the zero step BS to save face. Gather step is better term than 0 step young bloods will took it as 0, 1, 2 instead of just 1, 2. 0 1 2 is 3 steps if not done right

A gather is just a hestitation dribble. You can’t count the steps until the ball is at rest. The ball is at rest when the either the ball is palmed, two hands on the ball, or a hand under the ball. The word gather step confuses those who doesn’t know the rules fully. I’m a HS referee, so I better know the rules.

THe gather step is a step. You don't start counting at 0, there are 3 steps in today's game and I can't stand it because of how subjective it is to call. Players aren't at fault for taking advantage of what refs can't see, but the gather step is ruining the game. More so BS fouls offensive players draw leading to more of an emphasis on drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line than getting buckets. IDK I made a vid on this on my channel but I really think pure basketball is never coming back
