THIS!!! I don't understand the "books are sacred, why are you taking them away, they are MY BABIES". Sure, they are your babies, but mine are a very specific group of books, with a deep meaning, even if they are cheesy YA romance. But outside this group, every book is just a book, and if I feel they don't belong in my bookshelves, they LEAVE. With a kiss, but they leave. And it makes me SO RELIEVED...

I totally get what you mean about your thoughts marinating and realizing a book wasn't that great after. It's like immediately after finishing a book I'm on this high of yay I finished a book and really want to like what I spent my time reading when in hindsight I later realize it wasn't "all that"

I’ve only read Midnight Library out of these which I do have a review on. I think this one for me was right book at the right time as I was dealing with a whole lot of grief from losing a loved one in a similar way. It was one of my favourite reads of last year because of how much it helped me, but I can recognize it’s a pretty heavy book and in some ways it could be fun with different outcomes. I do hope your copy goes on to help someone who needs it ❤️

the midnight library didn't have the mind blowing, heart shattering impact i thought it would have on me. i did enjoy the read, but it wasnt as good as i expected it to be. however, i learned a very valuable lesson from the book: it is so easy to romanticize "what if"s but you have to consider the bad parts too, and unfortunately the bad ones might be the most realistic. it has helped to let go of a lot of choices i didnt make and move on from my mother's passing (she was very sick).

I had to read 56 Days for my Crime Fiction course and it was definitely one of those books where I was reading it more out of obligation and dissection rather than feeling like an evolution on what could have been. I am still keeping it due to the fact that I keep all my school books.

I’m so glad someone else feels the same about The Midnight Library! I’ve only seen good reviews on it so I was so excited to read it and to get the sense of magic others felt but it just wasn’t for me at allllll. It felt super self-helpy and kind of preachy to me but I thought I was the only one😅

I remember when the Marie Kondo show premiered on Netflix. Everyone raged like crazy because she was so strict on how many books she recommended to keep. Even with the "Marie Kondo Challenge". And you know what? I do this every few months. A purge. They go, my bookshelves breathe, bad or just not for me books go to second hand bookstores/public libraries and better books/candidates (or the next part of a big saga, because I read fantasy and I'm a masochist) are waiting. Books are not a sacred thing. Sure, you can love them. I do! But the ones that are not as much loved (or spark joy, as our friend Marie Kondo says 9_9) they just leave.
@Xatalla2 жыл бұрын
I never got that because she also specifically said to keep the ones that spark joy in your life. If a big book collection sparks joy, don't get rid of it? A recommendation doesn't mean 'I must follow this' either & it's not like Marie Kondo physically yeets your possessions out of a window or something.
@herestia_photography2 жыл бұрын
Correct. I didn't understand it neither. But I apply the "doesn't spark joy" motto. And it helps a lot ^^.

I'm planning on donating To Paradise as well. I read the first 2 stories, but I didn't want to read the 3rd because I'm not a person who enjoys pandemic stories while living in a pandemic and after hearing that things don't connect in the end, I know I'll never finish it. I loved A Little Life and liked The People in the Trees, but I genuinely don't know what she was trying to say with To Paradise

Jesse, I always enjoy your videos! So glad I stubbled on to your channel last fall! As I have been collecting lots of books this spring I've been going through books I have and unhauling a few here and there! Trying to make more room on my selves! Last book I DNFed was Undertow by Michael Buckley, I got about a third way through and gave up. I wasn't quite feeling it. I thought it was kinda interesting, the writing seemed good. I had so many questions which maybe probably, would have been answered??? Everything seemed really weird and it definitely wasn't really jiving with me. So DNFed. Hopefully the book will make it to someone else who will actually enjoy it!

I just recently got rid of about 15 or 16 books, 7 of which were my set of the "Harry Potter" books. Before anyone asks, it's because I don't support JK Rowling anymore (I'm not one of those people that can separate the art from the artist), not because I don't like the books.

I totally understand your thoughts on The Midnight Library, i had read Haigs book How to Stop Time and extremely enjoyed it as it incoorporated the message within the story which is what i wanted, whilst i know that this book has helped people for me i was not looking for a self help book and like you said, it felt like one. How to Stop Time really helped me so i appreciate how the Midnight Library might do that for someone else which is great if it does, it just did not for me.. :)

while I agree with your take on Mariana (The Maidens)...I still enjoyed the book. I think for me it was the fun and thrill or trying to figure out the plot twist and failing miserably :))) just like with the silent patient, I love that moment at the end where you go "no wayyy! I did not see this coming" :)) loved the book unhaul btw, more fun than hauls :))

I'm trying to be better about keeping and getting rid of books and using the library more often. If I re-read a book a lot, it has deep personal/sentimental meaning to me or it's out of print, I tend to keep those. Like currently I'm going through my BOTM books and deciding on which ones I'll actually make the attempt to read and which ones need to be removed from my shelf. Because while I love that BOTM offers so many different books, almost none of them are up my alley for my preferred genres. I'm so sad to read all these reviews for Havenfall and find that even at its most basic, it is boring. Definitely not for me, but that cover and that edition; beautiful but so shallow, for a book.

Agree on midnight library. It was depressing (I get it’s about depression but this was the wrong way to make the reader feel it). I kept going because I hoped it would get better. But no, she went through so many lives where I thought we’ll just stay here it will get better with time. Don’t go back endless times that’s too easy. (There should have been a limit of 3 tries or something to make it more exciting). Spoiler alert but didn’t she just go back to the original anyway? Honestly without the audiobook I would have given it away halfway through.
