I love when kids have alternative interests besides tractors and trucks. My son is obsessed with bagpipes. Yup. Bagpipes. And all things Scotland really but primarily bagpipes. He is 7 and has never been to Scotland.

I have autism and ADHD. One common trait of these is called a special interest, or hyperfixation. This sounds like your son might have a special interest. My main special interests are pillows, and anything relating to jungles, step pyramids, and Mesoamerica, particularly the Aztecs. I became really obsessed with all of these things when I was around 5. I remember being around that age and watching my older sibling play Zuma, and just being enamored with the step pyramid and jungle theming of the game. And I loved this restaurant chain called Azteca Mexican Restaurant because I thought "it's called Azteca! It must be related to those people that built those cool pyramids in the jungle!" But of course in reality, the Aztecs did not found that restaurant, and they didn't live in the jungle.

@@RivLoveshine I'm also autistic, but I think pretty much all children go through phases of intense obsessions and it's a bit odd to claim a child has a special interest based on a short KZbin comment.

At four years old, (around the late sixties early seventies) I declared that I wanted to be a professional Dancer, and Like yourselves my parents were amazingly supportive and encouraging (they didn't care about gender specific activities) and I went on to have an amazing life and career spanning over forty years as a professional dancer, including 12 west end musicals and a couple of touring ballet companies. Rupert is a very lucky young man, with Parents like you, a little hard work and passion he'll achieve great things, what ever he chooses in life. kudos ladies, you're doing a wonderful job 🎅🏿💛💛 P.S. Nice partner work Rupert, well done x

My five year old son was the only boy in his ballet class. He had the opportunity to perform in a local show where he was teamed up with another boy, and they really enjoyed dancing together! I asked his teacher, “how many children do you need to run a boys’ class?” because I thought he’d love it. The teacher told me she’d need ten sign-ups, and do you know, I did it! I found ten little lads who like leaping around. Quite a big feat in south east London! So, the new class has been running weekly since the summer. What did my son say? “I miss the girls’ class!” Oops 🤦🏻‍♀️

@@Ravenovia usually this type of thing comes from outside of the ballet world, from people who don't know/care about the importance of gender balance in ballet and the stuff like that. most dancers are thrilled to have more of a gender balance lol, makes partnering stuff so much easier and makes getting roles less obnoxiously competitive for fem roles.

Big YES for limiting his choices to not overwhelm him! Love from an educationalist, who works with toddlers. Decision fatique is even valid in adults, forcing your toddler to decide everything is a sure fire way to make them a stessed little timebomb. 😑 Good Participation is giving children small, age appropriate choices wich consequences they can grasp. For toddlers this would be something like giving them two outfit options, just how Jessica does, or 3 pictures of lanterns to choose wich to built.

I love seeing parents taking their kid's interests seriously and respectfully, even if they would be what some might be "outside the box". My kiddos have mostly had interest matching of "gender expectations", but as I was someone who really didn't match any and grew up thus with slight resentment of some things feminine first because of the pressure invoved until I untied that later, I wanted to give my kiddo's ability to explore, and explore they did. My daughter now practices fencing and my teenage boy decided to choose "soft crafts" as one of his courses in school, and he crocheted a large Timmy the Lamb plush to his baby brother ( and it is so darn adorable!). I just love that they can do what feels authentic to them, and they don't need to wonder if we the parents are in their corner. Congrats for RUpert from the bedroom makeover!

limiting choices to just two items per draw is ideal for young toddlers, but at 3 going on 4, a choice between 3 or 4 items is probably fine for him. Having more of the clothes stored in the draws accessible to Rupert will be much easier for you to maintain as parents, I think it makes sense to go with that.

So fun to watch, the casualness especially. Makes it much easier to watch and follow, and gives it a cosy vibe. And watching this reminded me of a show i used to watch called dance academy, all about ballet and they were inclusive as well👌 And true, a lot of children's literature, though they have amazing art style, are actually really abstract drawings, and contain stories that don't make sense, don't have a beginning and an end, or use sentence that are too long with or complex(since anyone can write a book, they're not all equal when it comes to educational value). In my classes we also were taught to use more realistic drawings when teaching kids new vocab. And with animals, use of actual photographs was advised instead of drawings Seeing the cupboard reminded me of my own cupboard. 85% rarely used, 15% of the same things, but it does help having a section of ready to wear things, makes it much less overwhelming👌🤓
