I used to volunteer in a charity shop and if small children came in, I would always talk to them first (ie before their guardians) and literally as though we were in a fancy shop. Sometimes they were scared, sometimes they loved it. I remember a 5 year old girl coming in and getting a book with her dad. We had screens up because y'know, COVID. She put it through the little gap and I went "do you have anything else today, madam?" and her face just lit up. She looked nervous, but so happy. "No" "Would you like a bag, madam, or do you already have one?" "No, thank you, we already have one." "Okay, well, that will be one pound. Will you be paying with cash or card today?" She looked back at her dad and he gave her his card and she went "card" to me. "Okay, well, the card machine is just there whenever you're ready. Would you like a receipt?" *looks at Dad* "No" "No thank you" "Okay, that's all gone through on your card. Can I help you with anything else today, madam?" "No thank you. Goodbye." "I hope you have a lovely day and enjoy your book, madam." She picked up the book, handed the debit card back to her dad and left without another word. Her dad was trying not to laugh or grin after he realised that my focus was going to be entirely on his daughter. It's one of my fondest memories of volunteering there.

You can tell Rupert is your kid because he actually understands how clothes work. Also I love that you talk to him like an actual human - maybe I’m just annoyed because I heard someone I thought I knew completely change their voice to talk to a 5 year old in the most condescending way yesterday, but hearing people talk to kids like the complex people who deserve the respect that they are is quite refreshing.
@waffles36292 ай бұрын
Fr. Like I might make funny voices when playing, but if I'm just talking to a kid I talk to them the same way I talk to adults. Then again I once had someone ask me "How do you get along with kids so well when they're so stupid?" and somehow not see the irony or obvious answer in their question.
@DoveJSАй бұрын
@waffles3629 The saddest part is that impression of kids being stupid doesn't come from nowhere. Odds are high that same person was treated as if they were stupid growing up and then internalized it. And of course, a lot of people just don't understand that people make mistakes because they aren't born knowing everything which makes kids and then adults less inclined to ask questions so they can learn and then freak out or get upset if a mistake was made because they had no idea.
@waffles3629Ай бұрын
@@DoveJS exactly. Like yes, kids are less knowledgeable and less experienced, but that doesn't mean they are stupid, it means they are still learning. I was often treated like I was just a dumb kid because I didn't know something I was trying to learn, and it royally infuriated me.

If the person's kid has an expressive language delay, it may have been advised. I was speaking to my son like a tiny person, but he is speech delayed. The speech therapist advised different ways to speak to him. It makes me sound like an idiot. But my son's language has flourished.

I’ve always spoken to children and my own children like people. Never any baby talk! And as a result (well Idk if it’s specifically because of that, but it certainly helps) they have both tested above average and are incredibly intelligent. I truly couldn’t be more proud because all of us have ADHD and are all the spectrum. I was more so…somebody who wasn’t encouraged or guided in life and slipped through the cracks. I have always spoken positivity and encouragement into them and spoken to them with normal (adult) vocabulary. I never hid anything from them. And it clearly has paid off because they are advanced. My eldest (whom I had alone and as a teen) is about to graduate at 17 and in taking all AP classes. My youngest who is 9..I feel like he should be in a grade above and I’m currently not happy with the education he is receiving. He isn’t being pushed in my opinion. So I’m starting to look into other options.

Rupert’s adorable! He has excellent fashion sense. I’m impressed. I’m a pharmacist in the United States. I’ve had my “jabs” already. In the States, pharmacists are allowed to administer vaccinations. I’m not sure about the chemists in the UK.
@hannahk13062 ай бұрын
Most vaccinations are done at the doctors by a nurse. However, if you're not eligible for a free NHS one, then some pharmacies do offer private ones for things like flu, covid and travel jabs. I believe that they have to have additional training on top of the standard pharmacist training. The pharmacy itself also has to be big enough to have a consultation room. There was also a scheme during the pandemic where volunteers could be trained up to deliver covid jabs. * Also, just remembered that some pharmacies offer NHS ones too. They often have more evening and weekend slots and you can book at any one (e.g. near your workplace), so sometimes it's more convenient for some people than going to their registered doctors.
@FOJO272 ай бұрын
In Canada it's the same - pharmacists can administer vaccinations in-pharmacy for no charge.
@elizabethgrosvenor153Ай бұрын
The NHS is chronically underfunded, so people think "I'll go to the chemist, take the pressure off the doctor's surgery". But surgeries actually get quite a lot of money from doing vaccines, so they try to do a clinic and get through everyone in one day, rather than use up individual appointments.
@FOJO27Ай бұрын
@@elizabethgrosvenor153 Our healthcare system here in Canada is also woefully underfunded. I think folks living outside the UK and Canada who aren't using our healthcare services think our countries have their ish together, but we really don't. Nurses aren't paid properly (or respected), there aren't enough said nurses, burnout is a huge problem; there's not enough equipment in hospitals so having to share equipment between different floors is common (in hospitals that are in large cities). Can take years to see a specialist and don't get me started on LGBTQ+ healthcare (specifically trans/gender affirming care). This was all happening long before the pando, probably a good decade, and countinues to worsen. Such a completely unnecessary mess, doesn't have to be this way. Profit over people.

This is genuinely the most lovely and delightful video. Rupert is such a sweet little boy and your relationship is so wholesome. I've been having a rough week, and this brought such a bright smile to my face and really lifted my spirits.

How adorable to watch what fun he was having going through the wardrobe and pulling out items, especially trying on the "cute hats" together!

I can understand the frustration when your job is impacted by your illness but we all hope you rest up and prioritize health so that you can make many more videos in the future to come 🤕❤

I wouldn’t be surprised if that little guy becomes a world famous fashion designer one day, how does he have a better sense of style than I do?!

I really enjoyed this! Rupert is such a stylish little fellow! His choices were spot on! I wasn’t too sure about the last outfit, but it worked! Proof that he is better at styling than I can ever hope to be! Btw. Thank you for the vaccination PSA. It really is so important!

As a daycare teacher, from what little you show us of Rupert, you are doing such an amazing job with him. Just from the way you communicate with him its so easy to tell. Adorable video beyond belief
