so excited about the merch! I've shared and signed the petition too, the lack of subtitling is totally ridiculous - I'm sure I've seen people in the US get given devices that attach to their chairs that display the subtitles so it doesn't ever have to be a special subtitled screening

Here in the USA every movie is available with CC at any time, but you have to ask for a special device provided by the theatre that provides the captioning as they are not shown on the main screen. It's annoying because you can't really watch the main screen since you are having to watch the film on one screen and read the subtitles on another..BUT it is nice that ANY movie at ANY time has subtitles.

@@jessicaoutofthecloset yes, also for youtube videos, a lot of people who can read, write and speak English can't understand what is being said because of speed/accent difficulties, so their only resort is Captions! I used to need captions but with time have gotten used to different accents, but a lot of my family still needs them. I can't share a caption-less video with them....

4:55 as a hearing person who has English as the second language I definitely find subtitles helpful, even if my listening skill is good enough. It makes the viewing experience more convenient, since you don't have to worry about missing the dialogue.

I am hearing, but I literally cannot watch movies without subtitles. Half of what they say just sounds like gibberish to me and I hate it. I have no idea why cinemas don't always have captions on, I've never met a single person who is against it and numerous individuals who, quite like myself, cannot stand to go to the cinema over this issue.

I know one of my housemates won't have subtitles on when he can get away with it, but I automatically have them on permanently so it can be a bit sticky. If its a new film then they go on, if its one I have seen before WITH SUBTITLES then they are off. But yes, cinemas should have regular showings with them on. Even one or evening showings of all films every week.

I don't necessarily need subtitles, but I definitely do prefer having them on bc sometimes the dialogue is mumbled or it's difficult for me to hear/understand etc. so for things like Netflix & KZbin especially, but really anywhere I can have subtitles on, I will have them on. My dad always gets really mad at me when I put subtitles on, which doesn't really make any sense to me? Like I get for some people it can be distracting at first, I know it was for me, but you get used to it fairly easily and are able to block them out if you don't need them. I really wish cinemas would have convenient subtitled viewings, and I'm so glad you made this video !! Love u💌🌱

Fun fact, China has chinese subtitles on at all times. Even on Chinese movies and TV shows (and the news). It's not for the deaf people, but rather because due to dialects within the country a lot of people have trouble understanding standardised mandarin, but hey, accidental inclusion is still inclusion. (Also, if you get used to subtitles you will stop getting distracted by them quickly)

I just don't get the qualms with subtitles. So many hearing folks complain about them, but I am hearing and I have 0 issue with them. It provides the accommodation that some folks need and takes nothing away from the experience. why not have subtitles as a default??

It makes some people focus more on the text than on the image I think (at least, it was my case before). I actually like subtitles because I have hearing problems and it helps a lot, but I remember I didn't like them at first!

I find them really distracting, personally, because I find it really difficult to actually watch the movie and not just read and reread the subtitles (idk why, I find it really difficult not to read text if it's there, something weird about my brain won't just leave it alone). The dream solution, maybe, would be to have a similar solution to that used in opera houses in live performance- subtitles are broadcast on a separate screen above the stage or on the back of the seat in front of you. It's not distracting if you just look at the stage without wanting to see subtitles, but it's easy to follow the subtitles if you want to.

Once my friend who is HoH couldn’t see the face of our teacher so I did IRL subtitles by writing what the teacher said down. It was helpful for me to study and she got all the information! Honestly there is no harm in making things accessible.

Jessica I am here in America and although I am able to hear normally, I would rather have subtitles on because it's just easier to be able to understand everything going on, and not miss the finer details, like quiet conversations. My best friend and roommate is going deaf too, and has worn hearing aids since her early 20s, so we always have the subtitles on when watching TV. I think having them as a regular function at the movie theaters would be awesome and having NON SUBTITLED movies should be the "special offerings". Its just better all around with subtitles!!! The human brain can block them out pretty easily if you don't need them. Like me. I jump back and forth from reading them. No problem!!!

As a fully hearing abled person I still watch with subtitles almost exclusively. All the Netflix and Hulu shows I watch have them turned on! I cannot image how frustrating it would be for someone with limited/no hearing without them available everywhere.

Hi Jessica! You look lovely. :) Glad the migraine run has ended. Wow, I had no idea that Closed Captioning meant I could choose whether to have them on. Learn something new every day. When I watch Netflix or amazonprime, I use the cc because 1. Everyone mumbles and 2. we watch a lot of foreign shows, so they mumble with accents. I probably go to see a movie once a year, so never paid attention to subtitle offerings. There are so many little icons by movie descriptions that I just ignore them because I don't know what they mean. Yes, I am old. Did I mention you look lovely? That's a darling hairstyle. My sister recently had several severe ear infections and her eardrums were damaged. She now has some hearing loss in both her ears and although she doesn't need a hearing aid for most daily activities, movies and tv shows are impossible for her with out captions. We haven't gone to see a movie in theaters yet, and I don't think she's even realized the might be an issue! Thanks for bringing it up! (Side note, she would have been fine if she had health insurance and antibiotics, but instead she had ear infections for the better part of a year before her eardrums ruptured and she had to go to the ER, but then without reliable medical care she got several more ear infections and ruptured her eardrums several more times! god bless america)

Mikey Surratt omg. When I was in high school, my ear drum ruptured once from ear infection, and it felt like half my head would fall off. I can’t imagine going through that more than once. I don’t think my hearing was affected by my situation...but I was able to go to the doctor. 😮

@@punky19761 usually eardrums grow back in just a few weeks, but because hers ruptured several times in quick succession they didn't heal back properly. It's really sucky because it was totally avoidable except she couldn't afford to get treatment 😑 but yeah she says it's the worst thing she's ever felt, and it lasts for ages :(

I had the same thing when I was about ten. I'd had constant ear infections since I was a toddler, and now I can only hear out of one ear because doctors just didn't believe that my ear could get infected again so quickly.

Im from the uk the land of free helth care but my work is what let me down i still had to work 45+ hours a week and wasnt aloued to pick my days or day off so getting a drs apointment was imposabell so i had a recuring bactirall ear infection for about 3 years and it destroyed my hearing the scaring that you get when your ear drums rupture is really really painfull when it gets cold so get your lovely sister some cute earmuffs and hats ready for the cold creeping in they will feel it befor the rest of her body notiss the cold

Oh my goodness I just started watching Dragon Prince, they have a badass warrior woman who signs her lines, and her second translates for her to those who can't understand-- though some do, and sign back! And not everything they say is translated, like a really touching moment where she's speaking to the grave site of someone deceased, and you get all of her sadness and emotion by watching her expression and gestures. I'm only 5 episodes in, but she is be far my favorite character. And she's so strong and badass!

'attention problems', oh hey, that's me~. I have ADHD, and my brain quite frequently takes little mini trips off sideways while I'm watching things, even though I too very much love movies. Also I very much love to be able to talk about what is going on with others as it helps me process it better and stay focused, and I enjoy it as a group activity more, and when there are subtitles I can do that and no one misses what's going on because of it. And to add another reason hearing people need subtitles too; literally every hearing person I know, and I myself, have complained about in movies how often they go from BIGLOUDBOOMBOOMCRASHBANG to softsoftwhispering and none of us can catch what is being said. My Nana hates going to the theaters because of this. Hates it. On the rare occasion there is a film coming out she is interested in, she says she'd rather wait for Netflix.

Before you even mentioned caption glasses, I was like "someone should make high-tech glasses for it"!! No idea they already exist (supposedly). I have no hearing issues, however am super peeved at cinemas that have specially designated places for people in wheelchair... Far away from all the other places (God forbid we have friends/dates we want to interact with during the film, in a cinema, which is supposed to be a "social" activity.) Bonus peeve points if it's next to a trash can.

I'm so sorry this is such a common issue for you Jessica. Maybe this is an American thing but at almost all theaters in my area they the glasses that give you captions. You just have to ask for them. Also because I'm a wheelchair user and don't take up a seat my ticket is free.

What area of the US are you from? In the mid atlantic, the movie theaters still charge for the "handicapped" seats (ie. a space to put your wheelchair with a few seats next to it for your family/friends). Where I am we have a machine that sits in the drink holder with a long arm supporting the display for the captions. It can get a big much with visually bouncing between the captions and the picture (it does not superimpose the captions onto the movie picture). Do you know if the glasses work overtop of regular glasses and if they also create the bouncing issue?

They obvious read certain papers that like to make out everyone with an impairment or disability willingly sits about taking money from the government and actively avoids work of any kind. Amazing that they think having an impairement suddenly sucks a person of all their ambitions and skills... some people just don't give a thought about others. You'd be shocked at the number of people who believe that people with any kind of physical disability are also cognitively or developmentally disabled, or that all they need to do is "try harder." I've encountered some who think blind people also can't hear, or that all adults in wheelchairs have the mental age of small children, or that people with seizure disorders are "just faking"...the list is outrageously long. It's honestly a comfort to see anyone who is horrified by this

I think there is a certain cultural aspect in having subtitles or not. Like I am Dutch and dubbing is basicly only done on shows and movies for kids so everyone grows up with subtitles on english shows/movies (the majority of shows/movies we watch) so even though I'm hearing and would be perfectly fine without them I'm so used to them that I still miss them when they aren't there. I know there are people who say subtitles are annoying, because of the internet, but it feels so foreign to me. (I hope this made sense)

In my country, dubbing foreign movies is... not a thing (unless it's a children's movie). In other words, if it's in English or any other foreign language, there's always subtitles. With two languages on top of each other. Because my country has two official languages :D Even the dubbed kid's movies have showings on the original language with subtitles. I am a hearing person, and the text at the bottom of the screen has never bothered me. Just a matter of getting used to it, maybe? (Actually, the movies made in my country might actually have captions at least on the other official language, but to be honest, there are not that many interesting movies from here. Most of our showings are for foreign movies :D)

Being able to hear and all, I don't know what it's like to go to the movies and how big of a struggle it is when you're deaf. I was watching this and it made me realize that in America, at certain movie theaters, you can get glasses with close caption for deaf people. I'm not sure about theaters in the UK though.

I found 3 possible solutions: 1. In 2012, Sony created a prototype caption glasses for the cinema with plans to launch in the UK. In 2013, regal cinemas began handing out glasses to the public for testing. I can't find any more recent news, but try asking about it if you go to a Regal cinema (do they have Regal in the UK?) 2. There is an app called "Live Caption" that takes live audio and prints it as text on your phone screen. This means you'd have to keep switching between looking down at your phone and up at the screen OR find a tech person to hook up a display you can wear over your eyes that will show the text from the app. 3. A kid in New York made such a device already called the LCCTS (I think). It's a pair of glasses that takes in live audio and prints out text on a display over the lenses. His indiegogo campaign failed, but he successfully made a working prototype. You could contact him and ask/pay him to send you a working device. Who knows, maybe you could even help him share the device with other people in the deaf community. His name is Daniil Frants from New York (he was on the tonight show with Jimmy Fallon if that helps)

I hate people who can hear perfectly, like myself btw, and bitch about subtitles. It's not that hard to just ignore the subtitles and watch the movie like normal. I do this all the time with friends who are not as fluent in English as myself and have friends and family members who can't hear that good or are considered deaf and so far I had no problem with just ignoring the bit of text in the screen.

My sister does this and I'm hard of hearing. I hate watching stuff with her. I watched both Deadpool movies with her and barely enjoyed them because I wasn't sure what was being said because I couldn't turn on subtitles or turn up the volume more. It's horrible. I'm really stoked for the next Star Wars film and I hope I have my hearing situation sorted (my hearing has been messed up since the end of July. Imagine hearing better and worse at the same time) by the time it comes out, or there's a good chance that I'll go see it and not enjoy myself at all.

I find they get on my nerves because I can't read well so can't keep up and get distracted and fustrated but that's got to be nothing in comparison to not being able to hear so to me I would totally support captions on every viewing. Maybe if it was more common I'd learn to zone out from them I dont know. Yeah it might make things a bit more tricky for me but its worth it if it means people who are D/deaf can enjoy the cinema as well. We all deserve to be able to enjoy the cinema regardless of our abilities or impairments.

I can't ignore the subtitles. It takes a lot for me to try to ignore them and while I'm trying to do that I miss everything that happens. Not everyone can watch movies with subtitles and 'just ignore them'. You might be able to do that and that is great, but I can't and that is okay too.

Awful Isn't it. The Regal Cinemas in New England are doing a monthly Studio Ghilibi fest. Every film they've shown has been the dubbed version. I have no hearing issues. I'm what's called a chronic reader. I cannot sit through a film without subtitles, any film, and have it hold my attention. I MUST read the film as it's happening or I'll simply dose into boredom and won't retain a thing.

To be perfectly honest, I don't particularly enjoy having captions on when I watch a movie. So I don't have them on when I watch a movie at home, but cinemas should be accessible and enjoyable for as many people as possible - not just me. When I am reminded of all the people who benefit from subtitles, I wish I wasn't the kind of person who found subtitles distracting most of the time, but subtitled showings [including for films in the country's official language (s)] should be more frequent and at better times. I don't even know if there are any (outside of films in languages other than English or French, in French-speaking areas) in my country. And if it was the only showing available or I was going to the movie with someone who needed them, I would be fine with going to a subtitled movie showing.

My boyfriend is not deaf but he does have a hard time fully understanding the words in lots of movies/videos/shows and prefers subtitles on most everything. Myself, used to watching foreign films, am quite used to reading subtitles and do not mind. I think a small bit of text wouldn't interfere with people that don't necessarily need them. I would love if cinemas had subtitles for him to enjoy them more and also because sometimes even when actors/characters whisper it can be hard to hear the correct words too.

I'm not hard of hearing and I watch EVERYTHING with subtitles on. I have definitely thought how awesome it would be if they had captions in the theater because it seems quite common these days to have the volume very low on the dialogue parts. If the captions are along the bottom and not taking over the whole screen, why should people have problems with it? All it does is help! Glad you're feeling better!

Thank you for sharing your experiences and how to possibly help with this! I don’t go to the movies much either because I’m autistic and cinemas are ridiculously loud and over-stimulating to me. I’ve recently started wearing noise blocking ear plugs, but that makes it even harder than it was to understand what’s going on, but at least I can make it through the movie. It’s ridiculous that cinemas get away with blatantly going against the law and I hope for everyone’s sake that it changes soon!

I don't have a diagnosis of autism but am sound sensitive and wear those earplugs designed for musicians so it sort of turns sounds down rather than muffle them like the foam plugs do. I have not been to the cinema in years because I often find it too loud as well. I find they are too dark as well so it makes brighter bits of films too bright in comparison so thats a bit over stimulating for me.

I love watching English films with English subtitles. English is not my first language, and sometimes I might not catch some words, or missed some words, so subtitles can help me get every word. In Malaysia, all screenings will have subtitles, but not necessarily English subtitles for English films, usually English subtitles are used in non-English films. I did spent two years in Cardiff, so I spent two years watching films in the cinema without subtitles, my fellow Malaysian friends in Cardiff at the time preferred for there to be subtitles as well.

Hi, as a worker in cinema, we don’t have many subtitled shows but if we do they are in odd times so I absolutely agree with that. But we have a brilliant management team so if we knew that someone would need subtitles, they would try to put them in for them 😊 maybe try to contact your local cinema and see if they could do that for you 😊

In Germany all films are dubbed.. Since I prefer Original versions I always search for those versions. And most of the time, they subtitle them, especially new films. If you want the German version, they mostly only offer the app services. But from experiences, there are cinemas, that block the online signal, once the film starts. I hope, there will be a solution for everyone.

According to my software developer husband it would be very difficult to synch up and would have to be broadcast by the projector unit and latency would be a huge issue. Now that I've mentioned it to him he's trying to figure out how to make it work though 😊

I'm Canadian and most movies here have the option for closed captions. They have special seats that have caption machines, that (I think) you can position so you can watch the movie and read the subtitles at the same time. Admittedly, I haven't used them as I'm not deaf, but it seems like they would work well? And the infrastructure involved doesn't seem to be complicated so maybe that's an option when trying to get British cinemas to be more accessible?

I'm wondering if your caption machines are like the portable version we have in the US that sit in the drink holder? I find that I do have to bounce between peering at the cations and looking at the screen, no matter how much I play with the positioning. The frame of the cation viewer itself blocks part of the picture -- requiring me to bounce between the two. It does not work *nearly* as well and seamlessly as open cations where the captions are actually up on the screen for everyone. Unfortunately too many hearing people complained about open captioned so it is rare to find that now.

HelloHello!! In Appleton, Wisconsin the major movie theater company is Marcus Theaters. There are two theaters in my city, and both offer this thing called CaptiVision, a small cellphone-sized closed-caption device on a long bendy stand that plugs into the cupholder of your seat. You are meant to adjust it to be lined up directly under the film. This device is available at any showing at any time. My mother has developed her severe hearing loss gradually, and over the years we've stopped going to films as much in the theater. Just last year we finally convinced her to try the closed-caption device, and I can't even describe how amazing it felt just for me to see her laugh along with everyone else at the SAME TIME, because she could understand exactly what was going on. Nial Dimarco made a video about the CaptiVision and said it's not the best, and I agree it can be a bit annoying trying to get it placed correctly, and then what if you have to get up to use the restroom?? But overall, it has been great for my mom!

Hi. Do you think the situation in UK is bad? Well I think in Italy can be even worse. In my home-country every - and with every I mean 100% - movie is dubbed. No subtitles never ever, not even for foreign movies, which account for the majority of the movies screened. I don't have hearing problems so I cannot tell from direct experience but I firmly believe life for hearing impaired people in my home-country is a hell as far as going to the cinema is concered. In Belgium (at least in Brussels and the Flemish part of the country), on the contrary, the huge majority of the movies are subtitled simply because dubbing does not exist (except for children movies). Of course if a movie is in French or Dutch no subtitles in the language of the movie will be provided which is a pity! Subtitles are an habit, you just need to get used to them. They do not disturb hearing people at all. On the contrary in non- English speaking countries they could help learning a foreign language (a big issue in my home-country). I think this is a widespread issue and it should be seriously tackled at EU level in order to be effective for eveyone (unluckily UK has recently decided to leave the Union). Keep fighting for subtitles! 😊

Not every country dubs everything like Germany and a few other bigger countries to and just either put subtitles in their own language or in the film's language under it which is actually great for deaf or hard of hearing people. Only countries that are spoiled with great dubbing like my home country Germany or because the best films already are in your native language really have a big issue with putting more effort in for people who need those subtitles or one of these devices.

The subtitle glasses and audio descriptions are advertised same as a movie, like a poster on the wall. Tho I’ve never seen anyone use them, as there’s almost a sense of shame around using them, which is unfortunate and quite silly honestly. They are available, but not commonly used, nor are they all that well known. If you aren’t like me, and you don’t read every poster on the wall, then you are likely to miss the poster showing them off. I believe it should be more widely accepted, used, and advertised

I'm a hearing person who lives in the United States and speaks English. I don't really need subtitles. However, when I'm at home watching a movie I tend to have captions or subtitles on as a default, to the point where I got annoyed when a movie I recently rented didn't have any captions. It's just useful if my attention slips or if I'm eating something noisy or if something's loud outside suddenly. I know a lot of hearing people who do this too, and I feel like if cinemas added more showings with captions people would largely get used to it very quickly.

I never cared for captions before and found them kind of annoying but when I started dating my current partner (we are both abled body) he watched netflix, etc with captions on and at first I was a bit "ugh" but after living with it and I keep them on even if I'm alone and when I go to the movies now it feels so weird to watch without captions. So as a hearing person, I wouldn't mind captions at all, it can be easy to just not understand something and captions let me catch that. And I've never used them, but my local theater in a midsized town in America had the caption glass service. There was a kiosk board to let you know it existed

I regularly leave subtitles on because of a word I miss, I know that sounds crazy, and I am a hearing person! I love subtitles though. I wish I could have more of them. I currently live in the southern US, in a smaller city, missing Seattle :(. I remember when I lived in Japan and had to watch an English subtitled film. Again, subtitles are awesome, and I hear perfectly. What prevents this from being a regular thing? Also, I wanted to mention KZbin's subtitles are quite off in places. I wonder if we can find out how to make subtitles more accurate?

I wish cinema’s had frequently available subtitles! I live in America but have never been to a show with subtitles or seen a listing for one but I could have just not been paying attention. But subtitles are really helpful for my ADD because they give me something else to help focus on so I don’t mentally wander off in the middle of a film. They keep me engaged. And I wish more showings with subtitles were available also because sometimes my HOH mother has trouble understanding certain dialogue and it would honestly be more helpful for everyone in my family if we could find more subtitles showings.

I think subtitles are great! I hear just fine (most days) some days my tinnitus is worse than others but it's just aggravating, doesn't really impair...BUT I have obsessive compulsive tendencies and have made this rather annoying..umm..thing that I do and if I don't catch every word I rewind and watch the same part of a video or film upwards of 10 times if I don't catch the words lol. Like even if someone mispronounces a word, I just have this double, triple checking type thing I do where I have to know exactly what was said verbatim lol😂 Its a very strange thing but this is when subtitles help calm that down..because I can literally lose hours of my day relistening to something just to satisfy that urge in my brain. Hi Jessica! I completely agree with your video for two reasons. A) my mum is HoH so if I go to the cinema with her it would be awesome if she could understand the entire dialogue. B) english is my second language but I prefer to see movies in english. So when I go to an english showing I would very much appreciate subtitles just in case I miss or don't understand something. I'm definitly going to email my local international cinema and let them know that the demand for captions is there.

In Poland 95% of films have subtitles as they are foreign movies and no one complains. It doesn't disturb during watching. Cartoons for kids have dubbing, some of them you can choose (dubbing or subtitles). The only complaint we all have is LACK OF subtitles for our original polish productions. That's because you can hear in the movie everything (wind, footsteps, door creaking) but not dialogues! 😂

I absolutely hate having subtitles on a film when I'm at the cinema and it's in English as I have a habit since childhood of focusing on written words more than anything else around me. However, of course I'm signing the petition! Cinema's can still have plenty of showings for both captioned and not films and if they're that bothered then they can invest in the glasses and then (depending on how well they actually function) they don't have to worry about it. Seems simple really, but I think the head honchos need a kick up the bum to get in gear!

They're too short for one story, too long for one sitting, I barely have time to get to know the characters before it's over, the story feels rushed, everything happens so fast, and there's so many small implied things that are easy to miss and yet integral to the story. I like programmes and audiobooks.

I never watch a movie without subtitles and If I’m not able to download subtitles I postpone the movie.. The amount of dialogue that happens in a movie especially when in cinema is distracting. Can’t imagine what I’d miss watching Avengers without subtitles. A random bit of information, in a lot of Arab countries and in the cinemas that I personally went to if the movie is in a foreign language (English included) they include Arabic subtitles as a default in all screenings and I don’t think I’ve heard anyone complain. Some movies in certain languages have more than one subtitles such as certain Indian movies for example there’d be English and Arabic subtitles as well in all screenings. It makes it more accessible for more people to watch. I’m sure there are so many ways to make watching a movie in a cinema more accessible but I guess they’re just lazy. One movie can have 6 screenings a day why can’t half be with subtitles or for them to treat it the same way as 3D films...? I’m sorry you had your movie night ruined and I hope this petition makes a change in your local cinemas.

My boyfriend (also fully hearing) and I watch things with subtitles all the time because people in the house talk or dogs bark and stuff and it’s easier to have both the sound and the visual. Hearing people appreciate subtitles, d/Deaf individuals NEED them. What is so difficult to understand about that?

I never thought of this being a problem in English speaking country! Here in Denmark, we have lots of films in the cinema that shows subtiles. This is mainly for the showings of the English-dubbed versions where they always have Danish subtitles. And to add on top, if it's a film which has both Danish and English dubs (So most animations), the English-dubbed version is usually shown later in the day! Hopefully you guys will be able to get more cinemas to show subtitled films more often! I honestly don't see much reason as to why there aren't more subtitled films!

I disagree with making every show subtitled (I am one of those hearing people who find it just a bit pesky when watching one), but there should be at least half of the screenings of all movies with subtitles. Many people need it to enjoy a film and it just makes others more comfortable (maybe if English isn’t your first language, or your hearing isn’t that great). It shouldn’t be an issue to get subtitled screenings more frequently, I wish it wasn’t. There should be a subtitled screening of a film right before or after one without subtitles so that the times aren’t insane. I’m sure more revenue would be gained for my this than having those showings at 10 am on a Wednesday. And many people like me who don’t need subtitles wouldn’t have much of a problem going to a subtitled screening anyway. I also think it would be cool to have a few of every theatre that captions all their films, so seeing all new films with captions would be an option for people. Again, not every film that comes out because there are some people who don’t like it, but it would be cool to have a strictly captioned cinema.

Not having subtitles is pretty odd for me, because every single film here (whether in Finnish or not) has Finnish and Swedish subtitles. British cinemas should definitely take a note.

I'm American and I lost hearing in one ear and would LOVE to have subtitles in mainstream films all the time. I have one fully hearing friend who hates subtitles so I don't hang out at her house anymore-- I hate people turning up the volume when I ask for subtitles. It's not the same, subtitles help me so much that I'd prefer some fully hearing people be aesthetically inconvenienced so that I can understand what I'm watching. I've also never seen the subtitle glasses and I'm always too scared to ask for them.

I find most people don't enunciate anymore, so i watch pretty much every show on netflix with subtitles lol it just makes my life easier, i dont have to spend the whole movie asking my boyfriend "umm what did he just say? did i miss something? what?"

And sometimes captioned screenings are even better because all the deaf viewers don't sit there talking to each other loudly throughout the whole damn thing so I can't hear the film. I worked at Disneyworld, and they have those glasses-basically it catches the mirrored words from a screen I’d turn on behind the viewer. They were pretty cool honestly Also I think everyone needs to use captions on Instagram stories-they are great!! Love not having to turn on my sound and annoy everyone around me

I have used the glasses for subtitles. They give me a head ache. I prefer the thing that goes in the cup holder and you adjust where you want to subtitles to show on the screen in your viewing site of the film. I live in Vancouver, WA USA and most all theaters provide 1 of the two options if not both. Most deaf around here likes the glasses better. I might just be to used to the cup holder style since I am not used to glasses.

I decided that movie theatres must just not want our money. I lived in a city with lots of international students and the only times screenings of movies with original voice (not dubbed) were on weekdays in the morning or early afternoon and I seriously don't get why they make it so incredibly hard to watch a movie in English when there is clearly a demand. Not only could the people use some English practise but we'd also be able to take our international friends along. Not surprised that they don't offer subtitles at reasonable times either!

That's crazy, in Las Vegas where I'm from they have multiple different ways to CC any movie.... Edit: The glasses are interesting but I know they have some with small screens that sit in front of you so the subtitles just show on your screen

Hi, I just wanted to say that the cinema I work at has these subtitle machines that sit in the cup holder and have this arm that extends to a small screen (of course the arm is adjustable for the guest). On the screen will have the subtitles synced up to any movie in our theatre so anyone can come to any showing. Sadly I am in the US though so I am no help to you :( maybe request your local cinema get some
